Have just written draft sleeve notes and a provisional running order for the next Cara CD - it will be recorded in early August and available soon after.

We are very pleased with the material and hope that we are able to it justice.

Another thing. I was going to ask if you and (it was) Colin were handled by Gamblemusic. But then I realised that I saw you in concert in an appropriate venue last night for money, so the question became immediately redundant.

Thanks KJ. We are off to do another in August so that Skip can produce hundreds of bootleg copies, meaning that we'll have to grope blindly for the solvency glitter. Good job we're in the capable hands of Gamblemusic (branches throughout Barrow).

It's a lovely CD, just right for relaxing to after a hard shift. Mr Oakley's 'The Second of May' & 'Abbeyfeale' and the band's sensitive treatment of the melodies are an absolute delight.

Ossonflags, I know I mentioned this to you last night, but I wanted to publicly thank you for your thoughts and to confess in a thread read by literally tens of people that I had to read your post to fellow Caran - Mike Ryan and sobbed throughout. I was a bit moved by what you had to say and the way in which you said it. There; I am a soppy git at times - but you probably know that already.

heloo, This CD was played on Henry Arytons Traditional Music Show last night on BBC Radio in the North, this covers the whole of the nortth of England, or part of it.He said it was really nice.
If you want a copy of this CD you should send a message to oakley, or if you are lucky you could get one from the mudcat auction, click on auction, but you have to be lucky because there is a bidding war for it between MMario and GGlok.john
PS Mrs Ossonflags has just made a filum about cristmus cakes, i saw it on my telly, we have got a different telly in hull called KIT.

Couldn`t have put it better `flags. If some of these tunes don`t start appearing in the sets of some of the established "names" on the traditional music scene then I will be very suprised. Have you sent a copy to Radio 2?

Asleep behind the settee

This is collaboration between some of the finest musicians I have had the privilege to listen to. Dave Oakley, fiddle and mandolin, Mick Ryan uillean pipes, mandolin, guitar, vocals and whistles and John Rawlins guitar and cittern.

This CD has everything a good piece of work should have, not least the balance of light and shade. But the overwhelming impression I get from this is joy, happiness and a celebration in song and tunes of some of the best original and traditional music from the Celtic tradition.

I have heard "Cara" play live on various occasions and this is an excellent representation of what they do in their live performances. After listening to this CD it is very hard to pick a favorite piece from so much good material, but my top three would be: " Exiles Song", "Second of May" and "She Moved Through The Fair". "The Mountains of Pomeroy" would be a close fourth. I listened to this with a certain amount of nostalgia as it was on one of the first Folk LP's I ever bought in my long lost youth. Like any good CD you always find something different in the music each time you visit it.

The introduction of Mick's playing of the uillean pipes on "The Second of May" is superb, just the right level of understatement that literally makes the hairs stand up on the back of your head. Any one who sings Irish songs in English pubs (and Irish pubs), as I do, will know exactly what Mick is getting at in his "Exiles song" I just can't get this one out of my head.

John Rawlins on cittern and guitar is, as always, superb. The guitar arrangement on "She Moved Through The Fair" (a favourite song of mine that Oakley has forbidden me to sing), has got to be the best I have ever heard.

Oh, and speaking of that dairy farmer from south Ferriby. I have been involved with Dave in his other life, as a musician in another band, for about two years, so I believe I can speak with a certain authority. Taking time out from soothing his Fresians (and sometimes me) Dave, as usual gives of his all in both his fiddle and mandolin playing. I close my eyes listening to the air "Abbeyfeale" that Dave penned himself, and I am right back to the west coast of Ireland. The excellence of his delivery, feel and passion for the music shines right through all the pieces he is involved in on this CD.

I find it hard to listen to this CD without a pint of Guinness in the hand.

Overall a truly inspirational piece of work

I absolutely urge you to buy this excellent CD, it will be the best twelve quid you will have spent this year.

So stick this on, close your eyes, get a drink in your hand - or whatever is your preference - and enjoy.

Mick McGarry ----- Lead singer in Oakley's other band.

The track Exile's Son is stunning.I have heard it sung live by Mike Ryan many times over the last five years and it still for me has lost none of the magic of when I first heard it.

Smallpiper, did I detect an element of drivel in your last post?

The heating system is brilliant aboard the "Penelope R" as she is now christened. I am starkers on the bridge without a single goosebump.

But that is only because I havn't got a CD player on which to listen to "Asleep Behind the Settee". If I had, I would resemble a plucked turkey (or anything else that might look severely goosebumped).

I was sitting on the bridge of my new icebreaker in a big leather chair, letting my thoughts wander to Sireen, naked cycling, sprouts, Lille, Twillingsgate, bannanannanans, melodeonist pelts and classic airship restoration - you know the sort of thing. All this shattered like a Sloop table when I read Gary's post.

Original, genuine copies of Asleep Behind the Settee can be identified easily as they are all in boxes in my cowshed. If you see one on someone's phonograph it is definately one of Gary's and must be destroyed. The owner must also have his spats torn from his brogues and a sprout deposited in his lavatory.

The bar code on Asleep behind the Settee is Fat one, fat one, fat one, space, medium one, thin one, thin one, medfium one, space, fat one, fat one, three thin ones, space, two medium ones, a fat one, a thin one, double space, fat one and three medium ones.

Look for this when approached by any dishevelled aerophonist in an opera cape and thigh length leather boots, leading an pair of impressive but imaginary horses.

I have now burned the definitive bootleg, and can show any interested parties a whopping 16% discount by offering my own copies of this splendid CD at £10 each. Rest assured that none of the proceeds will reach any Caran, thereby not sullying their artisitic purity with grubby commerce.

Only by keeping our music below the poverty line will we preserve its purity. All proceeds from bootleg sales will be donated to the landlord of the Sloop in exchange for abitiously priced 9bearhoi, to be shared amongst all aerophonists present. I think that's only fair.

Gary

I dont know as i did not go, i was going to but i felt a bit crap, Les said he was going, and I heard Graham the Banjo was going, so it was probably a good session, I will try to get to the next one, I was speaking to Steve at The Sun about the possibility of holding a session there every week, that way people would know what was going on, and it's a good venue anyway. He was very enthusiastic, but said the room used is booked up with meetings for the next month, but after that there should be no problem. The Tip n Spale is available in the meentime.
