Subject: Website flamer problem - any suggestions From: Maryrrf Date: 26 Sep 02 - 04:48 PM A friend of mine has a website with a guestbook. Somebody has started flaming him big time - nothing threatening, just silly messages like "You're a moron" and "Nobody likes your music". But there are lots of messages, sometimes posted one right after the other. He can't figure out who it is or how to stop it, aside from removing the guestbook altogether. Is there any way to trace a flamer or is it just too much trouble to bother with? |

He can hire a geek to hunt the punk down and shoot him. The ISP should at least be willing to look in its logs and see where the flames are originating from. Its obviously a juvenile so one decent solution is just to carry on gracefully which will bore him into going off and flaming someone more likely to react. A |

Delete their postings as soon as you see them, without comment. If anyone else replies to the flamer, delete both the flame and the reply. You have to be ruthless. |

He does delete them but is getting really annoyed because they keep coming. Although he probably wouldn't prosecute because it's just nonsense, he really wants to figure out who it is. |

The idea that potential playing work may be generated by the site or that people interested in her because they'd seen Rachael perform was totally lost on this person. Delete the spam as it comes in, but COPY EVERYTHING to a text file or something so you have a record, or just leave it there until The Powers That Be can get a look at it... and yes, do NOT engage in a flame war with the spammer... If you ignore idiots like this long enough, they get bored and go away...

I confess to pajama parties when I was around 10 years old where we'd call people and ask "Is your refrigerator running". If the answer was "yes" we'd retort "Well you'd better go cath it!" and then dissolve in laughter. |

I have a proceedure that is more effective at ignoring spammers, though I am sure my ISP has got some spamassisin filters (just a pay as you go el cheapo - but hosts my domain name too so I pay 30 UK pounds per 2 years for it). I put it in several threads but in essence it relies on having a safe folder visible in the email client (not the inbox but outbox is safe) and switching off the modem (unplug) before looking at any e-mail. It is about HTML mail (if pictures &/or colour) which has to get the pix and therby alerts one or two sites that your e-mail is being read. I still get spam but so little it is my re-assurance that the service is working (not always gaurranteed). They will keep trying in case, so I never let my guard down. It is definitely a "I got you you B******S" situation. d8^)

I would think that, unless it's truly threatening, the authorities wouldn't be able to do anything about investigating. I wonder if a real computer geek could trace the ISP's through the messages? But I guess that's very complicated to do. And even if you find the ISP that doesn't give you the e-mail address or really tell you who it is, I think. Not without further time consuming investigation. It would seem that, for now, at least, the only solution is to delete the postings when they appear and keep checking your site so they don't pile up. That's what my friend is doing. But he's definitely annoyed and if he finds out who it is...well.... |

Most posters have dynamic addresses assigned by their ISPs when they log on. In that same vein, however, you WOULD certainly be able to identify the ISP, and inform them that one of their members was playing dirty. Save all your messages for evidence. Most eMail clients have a function to display all the routing steps a message has taken. In Eudora, it's called "Blah, Blah", and the option is usually defaulted to "OFF" so you don't see all that garbage. In the meantime, definitely delete, definitely ignore. Only a certified sicko would persist if he wasn't getting feedback. |
