Subject: Info on Cyprus - music? From: My guru always said Date: 27 Sep 02 - 07:01 AM Hi Cats Everywhere :-) AnyCat got any info on Cyprus they'd care to share? Am going in a week's time & I know very little about the Island except that I'll be in the 'left-hand side' based in Paphos. Oh, and I get to go on a mini-cruise to Egypt to see the BIG CAT *BG* Local music (not clubs of course), Do's, Don't's, Nice Places to Go etc....??? |

Subject: RE: BS: Info on Cyprus - music? From: fretless Date: 27 Sep 02 - 10:33 AM Haven't been there for visit in about three years, or for extended stay in about a decade, but with possible changes and that limitation in mind...remember that Cyprus is a pretty small island and easy to get around as long as you're not trying to cross the Green Line (a.k.a. the border between the Greek and Turkish sections of hte island). For a nice excursion from Paphos, shoot north up the west coast to the Baths of Aphrodite. Back in Paphos, there are lots of adequate restaurants along the quay. Watch the prices, though, especially on fish which, since the Mediterranean has been pretty much depleted, are often imported and costly. My fondest music memories from Cyprus are of European classical concerts, often not well advertised, in the ancient theater at Kourion. Sometimes live, sometimes recorded (events organized by classical music-loving Brits at the military base nearby) -- you sit back on a warm evening listening to great music in a not at all crowded 2,500 year old theater overlooking the Med. There's nothing better! Kourion is a longer but not impossible for an evening drive from Paphos. I never managed to find "traditional" music performance venues when I was on Cyprus. You'll hear ethnic Greek music, of course, and you can find touristic performances; but not the sort of village folk music experiences or urban folk revival clubs I recall from other countries in that part of the world. They're probably there, though, if you've got time to hunt them out (although Paphos is pretty much a tourist town). For pre-trip reading, if you can tolerate the aura of patronizing British Imperial superiority, get Laurence Durrell's Bitter Lemons. Still a must-read if you want a sense of the roots of today's Greek-Turkish split on the island. |

Subject: RE: BS: Info on Cyprus - music? From: My guru always said Date: 29 Sep 02 - 03:21 AM Hey Patrish: Maybe see you in the Sunbow - whatever that is! Have a brill holiday anyway & keep checking out the mad Cypriots, they've usually got hearts of Gold :-) Fretless: Many thanks for all the info - especially the Kourion possibilities - I'll check that out as soon as I arrive, it sounds like a grand setting for music. NicoleC: Good points well taken! It looks like I may have been hoping a bit too much for local music. My holidays are usually in Ireland and I can pretty much plan my time around the 'real' sessions I've found over the years. Earlier this year we went to Scotland & found some good music there too, though I may have not been in quite the right area! Still, who knows - maybe I can find some real trad stuff hidden away behind the tourist stuff - I'll stay optimistic :-) |
