I don't know the chords, BUT...I'm sure that I have the song on vinyl tucked away somewhere. If all else fails I could get a copy sorted out somehow. Let me know.

     G
I'm John the Baptist
    F#
And this is my friend Salome.
E
And you can bet it's my head she wants,
F#
And not my heart only.
G
If you see me smiling,
F#
And you wonder why,
E
You can bet it's a private joke
F#
Between her and I.

And it's alright,

(Everything is alright.)

can any one help with the lyrics to this song as performed and written by john martyn as far as I am aware it was only released as a single as found on his web-site, a band called SPUD did a brilliant cover of this song.

"What a great song" Unfortunatly this sing can't be played in standard tuning.

But this is how I pull it off.

Standard Tuning

Intro: A, E, E7sus4, E

       A
I'm John the Baptist
       E
And this is my friend Salome.
   E7sus4
And you can bet it's my head she wants,
       E
And not my heart only.
       A
If you see me smiling,
       E
And you wonder why,
    E7sus4
You can bet it's a private joke
       E
Between her and I.

E7sus4       E
And it's alright,
(Everything is alright.)

E7sus4       E
Allright.
(Everything is alright.)

***********
    E7sus4
E    0
B    0
G    2
D    0
A    0
E    0
***********

I hope this helps.

Have fun!

I do it similarly to the version posted on the 1st. Oct 02 but but play minors instead of majors when it comes to the rundown & up on the F# & E.

I'm not home at the min' but I'll try that later. It did not sound in the right key when singing. I've never been able to get it right myself. I wonder what tunning John is using? The soung sounds like it has a bit more bass/lower then the standard tuning gives. It somthing to think about, I suppose. :P

Later.

Captain Lethargy:
Try it with a basic E shaped chord. Slide it up so you are playing an A (5th fret) down 1 fret BUT make it a G#m, slide down 2 frets and then back up to G#m
      A             G#m
I'm John The Bapist this is my friend Salome
F#m                            G#m
You can bet it's my head she wants not my heart only
A                      G#m
If you see me smiling and you wonder why
         F#m                     G#m
You can bet it's a private joke between her and I
         A    E       A       E
And it's all right and it's all right

On the second it's all righ you can do a repeat of the verse shift - A G#m F#m E

    A   G#m F#m E
E   0    0    0   0
B   0    0    0   0
G   6    4    2   1
D   7    6    4   2
A   7    6    4   2
E   0    0    0   0
