C-flat...I have a lot of Bonzos too and play in an occasional band doing a lot of their and similar fun stuff! Last gig included Canyons (I got to do the electric guitar solo...a lifelong ambition!), Hunting Tigers and Ali Baba's camel. Next gig (next week) will include Jollity Farm (with an additional verse from the original not done by the Bonzos and additional voiceover material drawn from the latest Archers sagas) as well as Chas and Dave's Sideboard Song as featured on Jools Holland's Hootenanny and The Shiek of Araby. Perhaps I should send you a tape (the band includes tenor and alto saxes/clarinet, guitars, banjo (jazz-style tenor), mixed percussion and electric/double bass and we have a blast...I thoroughly recommend this for unwinding at the end of the day...)

The "Avalon" anthology of Mississippi John Hurt's stuff, with various artists is terrific. Also picked up Steve Earle's "Corazon" on a whim from the cheap bin, and have been blown away by that record. And Bob's "Time Out of Mind".    sb

Thanks to Santa I've been listening to El Swanno and the gang (my nephew currently working in the US picked up my "hints" and sent me the Oak Ash & Thorn "Old enough to drink"), Herself got me Knopfler's "Ragpicker's Dream" and a Clinton Ford with the Alan Elsdon Band and I got her a Jools Holland and a Trinity College Big Band, and we're still putting the Blue Plate Specials on at regular intervals, packing them all with the Discman to take to the Sis-in-laws for New Year to listen to without disturbing the card school. Thanks to Bill Sables I'll soon have Guy Wolff's latest.

Well, today on the CD player an old Charley Patton (King of the Delta Blues)to go with the two new arrivals I've been waiting for since September: Coco Robichaux (Lousiana Medicine Man) and Catfish Keith (Jitterbug Swing). On the turntable an old LP "The Bosses" (Big Joe Turner with a Basie small band).
The Patton because Sonny Black dedicated an instrumental steel solo of a Patton song to me at the club on Tuesday.
I heard about Coco from an American novel, probably a James Lee Burke (one of those where the Louisiana atmosphere is so well described you can hear the frogs croaking and see the old man on the porch in the rocking chair playing the blues on a beat up old National, using the neck of a Jax beer bottle as a slide).
Catfish was drawn to my attention by another member of the club and I heard him play on one of Paul Jones' BBC blues programmes. I'm trying to persuade the club to book him when he's here in the Spring.

The John Prine song is on Andrew's new cd - I heard it on Tom May's River City show - Andrew is writing a lot of songs based on his life and they are good stories. Missed his house concert in Oak Park, but hope to see him.
I certainly wanted to be Prine, Goodman and Thieme!   
Saw Mike Dunbar at the Old Town Anniversary show - I still listen to the great Redhead album - it's on my mp3 player! Jethroe's break on Corrinna is my favorite, followed by Mike's version of Dutchman.

Thanks to the wonders of the Internet and Radio on Demand I'm listening to last night's Paul Jones BBC2 Blues show with cuts from the Library of Congress "Land where the blues began" and a studio set from Papa George.
When it was broadcast last night I was actually listening to Papa George Band live!

And you got me in the mood so right now I'm listening to Andrew Calhoun's first LP called WATER STREET----on the Hogeye Records label. It was and still is a favorite of mine.------------Had lines saying that something red (can't recall what) on something yellow was: --"like ketchup on corn". Seriousl mages like that simply cannot be taken lightly, right?

NO, Chris,

I've not heard that song. But I had 3 e-mails from Andrew in the last 24 hours. (Funny you should tell me this right now.)

BUT Andrew, when young, wanted to BE John Prine. He would play at the hoots at Somebody Else's Troubles (a Chicago bar/folk club in the 70s) and it was almost humorous; other singers would sometimes heckle him. It didn't quite come to blows one night when I told some guys to pipe down & let the kid work it all out. I could hear the poet he was gonna be. Mr. Calhoun was better every time I saw him back then.

(Back then it was terribly important to have all those open stage hoots where we could have the luxury of being bad. Hopefully, we were getting better as time passed. And the food & booze was free to the singers then. Those places kept some of us alive.)

But I'll ask Andrew about that song. Was it on a record???

Right now I'm listening to the Conklin Ceili Band's CD with Big Mick Lane's dulcet vocal tones powering their way throughout. I'm feeling the same way about it that I felt about the whole Mudcat 5-CD set : The love of Celtic music---- the exuberance and the honesty is so thick you can cut it.

Also, I've been listening to something Kat sent me----Oz's Henry Lason's poetry put to tunes by the singer---Peter Duggan. Very nice also. Lawson's poems have always painted vivid paintings on my mind. I can feel the heat and the dust and the thirst of the outback.

And the exceptional new CD (and the earlier ones too) by Jed Marum. Those have been on my CD player a lot in recent times. But the new one, THE STORY CONTINUES, is truly a well- polished gem of an album with exceptional backup.

And Seamus Kennedy's CDs are in the mix too. What a good voice this man has. I'd not heard his work before and it seems I really did miss an important artist.

The 5-CD Mudcat Blue Plate Special, for sure. At this point as soon as one CD finishes on the PC I pop in another one. Oh, and a few songs I have already typed up the lyrics- and there'll be more lots LOTS more. There are so many GREAT songs and tunes on them.

Today I've been learning 'White Snow of the Springtime'. Sung by Aine, written by McG of Harlow. Gorgeous. Took the CD to music tonight for them to listen to it. One musician said that as soon as the 'hecticity' of the holiday season is over, she's going to learn it.

There are so many extraordinary songs and renditions on the CDs. And nicely put together. For instance, Justapicker opens most of the CDs- and it's richly deserved. And Harvey Andrews has a reprise on song at the end of each CD. Beautifully done, Amos.

I've ordered a second set to give away as a gift...

Good afternoon, my name is Roger and I'm a recordaholic.
I haven't bought a record for a couple of weeks (OK, ten days then) but then this Ace records catalogue came through the letterbox. I was strong, I ignored all those reissued Doo-wop and Rockabilly titles but they were offering a free T-shirt if you bought 3 CDs. So today three arrived. Holy Modal Rounders: 1&2;Skip James: Delta Blues and Slim Harpo: I'm a King Bee.
As they'd run out of T-shirts they've given me a discount off my next order.
I know I promised Herself I'd buy no more till after Xmas (apart from the Coco Robichaux and Catfish Keith ones I'm still waiting for Amazon to deliver)but... a discount....
Help me get through this.

New CDs by Siobhan Peoples & Murt Ryan, Noel Shine & Mary Green, Paddy Glackin & Micheal O Domhnaill, Liam Murphy, Eamonn Coyne (Banjo) and one called Doolin Point which features live recordings of (among others) Matt Molloy, Jackie Daly, Kevin Griffin, Matin Hayes and Chris Droney.

All are highly recommended.

Oh, Mary Garvey ~~ Anne Byrne, one of my ABSOLUTE favorites! I just have the one album, and it isn't nearly enough ~~ Capitol International 10543, by Anne Byrne with Paddy Roche and Mick Crotty. I bought that back in the 60s and it is still a favorite. That and the Paddy Bell/Fureys album made up my first real attempt at turning LPs into CDs. The Paddie Bell I replaced with a REAL CD just a few weeks ago. Talk to Dick, you need that one, too.

Oh ~~ what else am I listening to now? The Allen Brothers, The Skillet Lickers, The Stripling Brothers and others from a recently acquired treasure trove of Document CDs.

The Country Gentlemen, from the Rebel box, so much good stuff all collected in one neat little pile. The hits and the little known gems. Take your pick, they are all good.

The Larry Nelson Family, Arkansas performers. Recent CD. You'll not find finer Gospel music anywhere. Guaranteed.

Harmony (Dave Smith, Robert and Mary Gillihan), Arkansas performers, their compilation of 90 and 95 recordings on one CD. Neighbors, Loch Tay Boat Song, From Heaven To Hell, just to name a few.

Brooke Breeding, Arkansas performer, CD made from 70s LP ~~ Flower In The Wildwood, Wagoner's Lad, Long Black Veil, Tramp On The Street. That's the one that is currently getting the most play.

FAO Jerry and C-flat, EMI released a box set called Cornology, which featured all 5 Bonzo Albums, plus some miscellaneous stuff the members did with other groups. This was about 1992 but you might still be able to get it - I got one about 10 months ago. Essential for lovers of silliness. I'd also heartily recommend "Sir Henry at Rawlinson End" by Viv Stanshall.

Well, C-Flat, I may just copy my Best of Bonzo Dog Band for you. I've already copied a Carmen McRae and an Etta James sings Billie Holiday CD and am copying a Kenny Burrell For Charlie Christian CD. The more I mail at one time, the cheaper they are, a piece.

My favorite Bonzo songs? Mickey's Son and Daughter is probably my favorite, with I'm The Urban Space Man and Jollity Farm following close behind. I just have the one Best Of CD...

I have to spend four hours every day at a job where I can wear a discman every moment. Lately I've been listening to the bluegrass band Daybreak (First Light), a Scots/Celt band Calasaig (Near and Far), Nancy Kerr & James Fagan (Between the Dark and Light), various Simon Mayor discs, Pierre Schryer & Ian Clark (Heat of the Moment), Handel (Water Music), misc Bach pipe organ music, and a wonderful new disc called Fresh Canadian Fiddle Tunes composed by Brian Pickell and played by several fiddlers and others.

There'll likely be a selection of blues soon in my rucksack which accompanies me to work. I like alot of the Alligator Records stuff.

Another four hours of my day are taken up listening to music students strut their stuff. Sometimes this is taxing, sometimes a gift, but always rewarding.

As I write this I'm listening to CBC news story, soon to be replaced by...oh I don't know...maybe Led Zeppelin...

Kelly Joe Phelps, Fred Eaglesmith "Ralph's Last Show", the Be Good Tanyas. The Tanyas are a likeable trio of B.C. women who met in a tree-planting camp and play a mix of N American Trad and original material, with real nice harmonies and relaxed (plunking, not showing off) acoustic instrumentation.

Flook, Michael McGoldrick-Fused, La Bottine Souriante and Pink Martini - a fantastic French eclectic band. Always played , Dan Hicks and anything by David Grisman. If you are on the Gnutella network(Through Limewire) there are some brilliant bluegrass tunes.

Boat Band, Sorcha Dorcha, Steve Rich's gorgeous "Porchlight Blues", Fleetwood Mac (the old blues band - not the Californian pop group!), the Kinks, Pete Morton's "Hunting the Heart" - the only album full of songs on religious themes I have ever liked - Tenpenny Bit's "Paddy Works on the Railway", Mississippi John Hurt, and "Revolver" by the Beatles - still probably the most revolutionary album I have ever heard.

Just burned a 20 song CD of old black gospel quartet stuff. The Five Blind Boys, Swan Silvertones, Highway QC's, Pilgrim Travellers. The other thing I've been listening to recently is a tape I put together titled All Seriousness Aside with tracks like Mickey's Son & Daughter by the Bonzo Dog Band, The Hole In The Elephant's Bottom by the Buskers, At Sundown by Harry Reser's Cliquot Club Eskimos and I Am An Apeman "live" by the Kinks. All beautiful stuff... :-)

The recent 2CD set of Greenbriar Boys 'Best of the Vanguard Years' which stands the test of time quite well indeed (Vanguard), Guy Clark 'The Dark', James McMurtry 'Saint Mary of the Woods', The Flatlanders 'Now Again', Mary Gauthier 'Filth and Fire', Various 'East Coast Blues' (2CD Catfish set), Various 'Man of Constant Sorrow', John Cohen 'Stories the Crow Told Me'.

My car stereo has a taped book of Beowulf in it, which alternates with a well-worn tape collection of eclectic folky items from a friend whose taste I enjoy. Between those, it's NPR or the Classics station.

The best of Van Morrison, volume 2 and Dire Straits, the albums Dire Straits and Sultans of Swing, records I've borrowed from the library today. I'm there every week and borrow "new" records. It's a great way to listen to music I haven't heard so much (or not at all) or old favorites I never bought.

Just now I'm listning to Evening Meditation with Van Morrison, very convenient (was that the right word?) for me as it's soon bedtime here in Sweden.

Since I fortuitously discovered Spinner Radio (soon to be Netscape Radio) on the Net I rarely play CD's (which is good, since my CD money seems to go to paying for silly things like food and electricity nowadays). Mostly I keep it on the Celtic channel, but hit the bluegrass, new acoustic, acoustic blues, jam bands and even reggae and rockabilly channels upon occasion.

I haven't been listening to a whole lot of recorded music, lately. Mostly Nordic folk, when I have, but (since the Nordic Roots Festival was just last week) mostly in my head, not so much on recordings. I find it difficult to listen to a bands studio-recorded music when I've just seen them live.

Oh, I've also been listening to a great Anouar Brahem Trio cd (Astrakan Cafe) I bought at their show last week, which was also great. I've had no problem listening to this cd, even though I saw them live. Weird.

Except for major event coverage, I haven't listened to the radio in 20 years. Because of the convenience, my pc is the source of most of my music today. A German group called Tango 5 is on right now. Lots of tango and flamenco this month.

We haven't done one of these threads for some time. What is currently on your hi-fi or car stereo?
Mine is: Sonny Black and the Dukes Heart and Soul, Little Willie John Best of... and There is no Eye (Smithsonian Folkways).
The first because I've heard them a lot at my blues club recently, the second because his tunes keep cropping up in people's sets and the third because of recommendations here at the Mudcat.
So...what is your current listening?
