Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Deda Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:42 PM I don't care what she's called, I'm just delighted that she's back. Welcome back to our remote little corner of the Milky Way galaxy, whatchamacallit -- long may you reign! Cura ut valeas! (Take care that you should be well / strong) |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 10:15 PM Sharon, FWIW, Aine's name in your post showed up on my screen as "Áine," -- the same way it does in the Subject line on these threads. Hi, "Áine," "çine," "Áine," "쳌ine," "Aine," "Gaelic Goddess," "Hey, you!," etc. Thanks again for the BLOBS and Chips! Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 10:06 PM Sharon, that IS the way I type it. And it looks fine in the preview. And if I post it into "Composer" and then copy the HTML code from "Page Source," the code looks fine. Nevertheless, folks tell me (often, but not always) that it comes out as "쳌ine." This thing is most perplexing. Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: SharonA Date: 08 Jan 03 - 12:16 PM Genie: If you're using a Mac, try Option + e (note that that's a lower-case "e"), and then type the capital A. Áine: Thanks for the chip! Can't wait to see what your next Challenge story is! |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Áine Date: 08 Jan 03 - 07:27 AM . . . I keep tellin' y'all -- you can call me anything, just don't call me late for supper! *BG* BTW, Genie, you can just type 'Aine' with no accent whatsoever and I'll be a happy camper ;-) . . . what is for supper, anyway? -- Áine, Aine, TGG, etc. ad greeneum |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 01:13 AM Well, the funny thing is that the second one was done using a procedure I commonly use (one that you and Daly taught me for using Composer), yet often when I do Áine's name that way, folks tell me it comes out as "çine."
Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 08 Jan 03 - 12:56 AM The first one is the one that makes the cedilla -- the others all look right to me! BTW, my Á is made with Option+Shift+Y. If I press Option + A I get å or Å. A |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 12:28 AM No, Amos, I see your top entry as that upside down exclamation point used in Spanish (which is also the way Aine's name appears in the "Subject" line of forum threads (as of about 9-12 mo. ago).
Your second entry shows as a capital A with an acute accent.
The thing I don't understand is this:
Let's see what happens when I type that same HTML code for Aine's name directly. Here goes:
er ..., Wait a minute! What appeared in my preview for the post above was the HTML code for Aine's name -- not her name itself with the acute accent! Now I see that in my last post, that HTML code got translated (preview notwithstanding) and it appears on my screen just as Aine's name does in your post when you spelled out the HTML code.
Let me try 4 things, and you tell me which, if any, of them, look right.
1. çine (typed directly using "option +)
BTW, they all four look the same in my preview. Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 07 Jan 03 - 11:42 PM Yes. To do it you type an ampersand, followed by the letter A, followed by the word "acute" or "grave", followed by a semicolon. You don't use "insert Symbol "in MS word I thik, because it puts in a high ascii code, which I think must get badly translated. I suspect the same is true of the option key command. I duno enough about the detailed levewl to say where the thing goes wonky on ya but a lot of the time what displays is a cedilla instead of a Capital A with an acute accent. This is A +Option: Á This is spelled out using HTML as described above: Á Lessee if they come out the same....Preview shows them the same. Everyone else see them the same? A |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 07 Jan 03 - 11:15 PM Amos, the HTML code looks just like it's supposed to, so I don't know why it doesn't work. Funny thing is, it DOES sometimes. (I've checked it with some other Mudcatters and on Windows machines, and sometimes it looks the same to the others and to me on the Windows machines as it does on my Mac. And it doesn't seem to matter whether I used the "Insert Symbol" command in MS Word or the "option +" keystrokes directly. Obviously, sometimes it doesn't come out right on the other end.) Here is the HTML code, as it shows in Netscape Composer's "Source View": Áine Isn't that what it's supposed to be? Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 07 Jan 03 - 06:49 PM Genie, ya gotta learn the HTML for those special chars -- the option version from your Mac doesn't translate right! A |

I'm really not your type, Bird, Ain't got no feather-down. Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 06 Nov 02 - 09:59 PM BULLETIN FROM MOUNT MINTThe Gaelic Goddess wishes it to be communicated to all Bards and Bardesses, songsters, skylarks, tribbles and furbelows of her Songster Realm that she is broadcasting green blessings from afar and will be among us at an auspicious time in the very near future. In the meanwhile, she wants it known she is receiving all Song Challenge suggestions and other communication although she is quitew deep[y engaged in resolving a terrible conflict on far Larynx, the thirteenth planet outward from the yellow star Descant in the Diva system. As soon as she can return to her favored Green Groves of Earth she will come again to the Mudcat Shrine to bestow her blessings in person... (Translation: Soccer Mom tried to be Super Woman, and has just now graduated from Codeine to Guinness as a means of pain suppression in dealing with the consequent setback to her cervical musculature or something of that ilk.). She further announces unto all loyal Songsters that there will come among us a New Prophet, armed with the Green light, who shall bestoew blessing in her Name across the land, who shall be honored as she is honored and bears her Charter and Blessing. (Translation: I dunno what she meant by that part. Could be the codeine wearing off?? :>))\ Hang in there, Challengers!! He'p is on the Way!! A |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 05 Nov 02 - 02:13 PM Welcome back, Sharon! ("Feather-filled bum," my a**!) *G* Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: SharonA Date: 05 Nov 02 - 01:51 PM Hello! I'm here, or back, or whatever. Sorry to be away from the lighter side of Mudcat for so long. I still have a song put aside that I "otter" finish... but here's something I dashed off quickly for this Challenge, with the recent Secret Santa threads in mind. AN EMU IS COMIN' TO TOWN (Tune: "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town") You met a large lout With big-white-dot eye. His chest "hairs" stick out But he ain't no guy: An emu is comin' to town. Escapin' and missed, A chicken king-size Wants to hide out But can't hide those eyes. An emu is comin' to town. He sees you when he's peeping Through windows he might break. His nose is tappin' glass and wood So he could a good mess make! So you better watch out Your window so high. You better not doubt That fella is nigh: An emu is comin' to town. With little thick brain And feather-filled bum Neck that can stretch And legs that can run An emu is comin' to town. With burly big men Who come from the zoo Chasin' him 'round With nets and ropes, too: An emu is comin' to town. The birds in Perth and Queensland Are glad that Aussie's free They'll celebrate their bonzer mate Who is still an escapee! So you better watch out Your window so high. You better not doubt That fella is nigh: An emu is comin' toooo townnnnn! |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 05 Nov 02 - 08:34 AM çine, I do hope those "vexacious disharmonies amongst the polytonal harpoid of Glottus 13, out there in the Mixylodian sector" are on their way to being resolved and that you will soon be back among us mortals. Mousethief, Nacho Chick, and I are among the B.L.O.B. deprived, and, anyway, we hate to think of our Goddess going through hell in Texas due to back problems. (Whereas hell in Texas politics is to be expected.) To paraphrase John Prine, "Come back to us, Gaelic Goddess, Hare Krishna, Beauregard." Genie |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 17 Oct 02 - 11:35 PM Question for the clones: Twice in this thread I have entered posts that contained umlauts, and I have done the "preview" both times, and the preview has shown the umlauts properly. Then when I went back and checked the threads, the umlauts have come out funny. One time the "a" with an umlaut ended up looking like a capital S, and this last time, the "u" with an umlaut came out as something like a capital "Y" with an umlaut. What gives? Genie |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 16 Oct 02 - 12:22 AM As to your second sentence, Amos, how about translating it into German so we can have a clue as to what you're talking about. (Are you saying çine has a sore throat?) *G* Your next sentence is quite clear, and welcome news! As for your last one, there's still time to "hear" some new Challenge! songs from Sharon A., Mousethief, McGrath, JenEllen, and any of a slew of other frivolous poets before TGG returns to serve the chips. Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 16 Oct 02 - 12:05 AM Challengers all! Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Genie Date: 11 Oct 02 - 03:59 PM Seems to me I recall reading that birds that got imprinted on humans often initiated courtship behaviors toward humans as well. It caused problems for folks trying to raise new generations of birds, because it interfered with their attraction to their own species. Of course, a duck would have a harder time with the follow-through than an ostrich would. Maybe someone who's been following this literature more currently than I have can enlighten us. Genie |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! - Part 90 From: Amos Date: 11 Oct 02 - 08:43 AM I don't recall the implied courting gestures in Lorenz -- maybe that's why the committee gave the ostrich study an Ignoble? A |
