But, seriously, if you've just gotta have another 14 fret slope-shoulder D, do yourself a favor and check out both Collings' and Santa Cruz's versions before shelling out 2 large for the CEO IV. It's probably a great box, (Only kidding about Martin Guitars being bad - I have three of them.) but I wouldn't want to buy it and then find out a year later that the Collings or SGCC model sounds a lot better. Subject: RE: Martin CEO IV Guitar -- Opinions? From: John Hardly Date: 01 Oct 02 - 11:30 PM It's a real nice guitar. I like the sound and the playability but I wouldn't compare it with your ol' J45. Its sound is more contemporary -- more sustain, less chunk. The sunburst, despite the picture is not like your old J45 either. It's a black/red/yellowish-natural and I don't really like it as much as the J45's color choice (I have a '60 LG with the cherry burst top). It is a more gibson than Martin sunburst ONLY in that it is a "burst" that is basically triangular and over the bridge, rather than Martin's dred burst that sort of follows the outline of the top. It is most probably louder than your J45 was (it has a longer scale length). This guitar also comes with a micarta fretboard and bridge -- something I have no problem with personally (in fact really prefer the look of when compared to some stripy or "dry" looking ebony or rosewood). If you really want to try to match an old J45 for both appearnce and sound, the two best I've found at this trick are the Santa Cruz VJ (as mentioned by BWL above -- the collings, however it may be fashioned in the mold of the old J45, has almost none if the sound or feel of one -- it's much heavier (physically) and is so refined in both finish and sound that it transcends the J45 by a pretty good margin -- and becomes a whole different beast in and of itself) and a Gibson limited edition from 2001 that was sold with the old three-in-a-row tuners with the white plastic tuning keys, and had a quilted mahogany back and sides, lighter bracing. These are mighty hard to find -- I stumbled across one and had to correspond with Gibson to get what details I could. |

The CEO-5 is a 12 fret, slotted headstock dreadnaought that has striped ebony fretboard and bridge, bearclaw sitka top, and sapele (mahogany) b&s. The CEO-5 was at least in part the product of a forum discussion (between Chris Martin IV and forum regulars) on Acoustic Guitar Magazine's "Guitar Talk" forum. It came into production a year later than the CEO-4. I like the CEO-5 considerably more than the "4". |

My J 45 is a a "Cherry Burst" as well, almost no darkeness in it. Just red and orange and yellow. I'm looking for a guitar I feel comfortable traveling with and that looks presentable on stage. My old Gibson looks like 40 miles of bad road, now. The modern J45s seem to be 1 3/4 inches at the nut, not my favorite, but I don't know about that limited edition you're talking about. The Santa Cruz is more than double the $1566 I can get the Martin for, and I can't get off 4 grand for the SC now and maybe never! Don Meixner, "Phil Ochs"! I hear you, Don, but no modern J45, or Dove or Hummingbird that I have found sounds remotely (or potentially) like my J45. Now if I can find that limited edition John's talking about... I've played four of them -- one at Wildwood in OH, one at Elderly's, one at the Podium in MN and a good friend has one that (#67) that I played for a few hours one evening. As to how it stacks up to the SCGC -- this is a tough one for me because the SCGC "Norman Blake" -- their 12 fret mahogany, is just about my favorite sounding contemporary guitar. Of course, with a 1 7/8 "neck by Louisville Slugger" it's a handful for some, but as I have large hands, I don't even mind that. The SCGC was really made as a copy of one of Blake's guitars and it really has the same "feel" as an old guitar. The CEO-5 is definitely (to my sensibilities) a "modern" guitar. It's sound is a little more trebly, a touch more brittle. It's also a different kind of feast for the eyes. Whereas teh SCGC has the more typical reddened mahogany b&s (or the rosewood in a few rarer cases) the CEO carries off a look of shades of amber -- both top and b&s. As I am probably going to be buying one of these beasts in the next two years (I just got an OM28V and am saving for a new mando first) -- so far my list of probables (based on availibility used) is -- SCGC Norman Blake, D18VS, and of course, if a Collings with the Adirondack top came along used......well... Back to the "new" J45 -- I am in contact with a guy who has a very nice, tobacco burst SCGC VJ that he is reluctantly selling for about 1800. |

I have a 14 year old HD-28 and I like it "maybe" even better than the HD-28. It is mahogany back and sides with an adirondack spruce top. I think the top is the reason it sounds so well. It seems more balanced than the 28 --not as "thumpy" on the Bass side, yet it has plenty of bass. When I went to buy it the dealer had a 10 year old D-18 which I took and laid them both side by side on the floor and had a friend just play the open strings through--everyone in the store was amazed at how much better the CEO 4 sounded compared to the D-18, and I am an 18 fan. If you can get one in the $1500 range you have a great deal and a great Martin guitar. |
