He's probably not still following this thread, but the song he quoted was not a Garcia/Hunter song. It was written by Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds. I think the Dead did cover this, but they didn't write it. |
Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken Vol III From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Mar 11 - 12:44 AM I don't like Volume III as well as I like the other two. Volum III sounds like it was recorded in the studio, instead of in a more informal and congenial situation. To me, this album just doesn't sound as "personal" as the other two. You can find a track listing and links to lyrics here (click) Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Vol. III Capitol Records 2002 Nominated for two Grammys Once again, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band draws an assembly of deities and wannabes around the campfire. Some of these are familiar, though veterans from the first volume have grown scarce: Doc Watson plays "I Am a Pilgrim" as a tribute to the late Merle Travis, who cut the same tune on the 1972 Circle session. Jimmy Martin returns too, his galloping, almost-reckless delivery undimmed by the years. From the 1989 sequel comes Johnny Cash, whose "Tears in the Holston River" eulogizes Maybelle Carter, his mother-in-law and the soul of the first Circle. New faces take the place of those who have departed: Willie Nelson is a logical addition. Emmylou Harris assumes her place in this pantheon, her voice breaking hearts even in harmony with Matraca Berg on "Oh, Cumberland." No performance stands out more than that of Taj Mahal, whose presence has a demographic significance and whose rollicking rendition of "Fishin' Blues nearly steals the show. Robert L. Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: michaelr Date: 05 Oct 02 - 05:37 PM Is that the Garcia/Hunter song "Catfish John"? --"Mama said, don't go near that river Don't be hanging around ol' Catfish John Come the morning I'd always be there Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn" That one? Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: denise:^) Date: 05 Oct 02 - 10:39 AM I'd always liked #2--it was the first one I bought; I liked it so well, I picked up #1 at a used record store. (I was a little young when #1 came out!) I never got around to putting it on a turntable (it seems like so much work, nowadays), but now it's available on a CD. Guess I'll have to get a copy...and now I'll need #3, too... |
Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: Steve Latimer Date: 05 Oct 02 - 08:53 AM Shakes, I had put II on the shelf for a long time, just spun it last week. I admit that it's not the original, but it has some really good stuff. Emmylou, Levon Helm and few others gave wonderful performances. I thought that Bruce Hornsby's Bluegrass treatment of The Valley Road was neat. I'm going to wait for feedback from here before buying three, but I have to think that given the line-up it should be very good. |
Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: GUEST,shakes@idirect.com Date: 04 Oct 02 - 11:43 PM Hunh! Growing up in Southern Ontario I listened to and loved the early, non-video country folk, and Circle One was truly a joy. But.... I have to take exception to the comments on Circle Two ... it's every bit as good and groundbreaking, but you have to remember it's from a different era. Do I sense a little bit of "sequels are never any good" snobbery? |

Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: ballpienhammer Date: 01 Oct 02 - 08:34 PM yup, bunch of McCuens are on it. I heard it non-stop now. Very fine compilation. It was to be released on the 5th but I found one today. I too, have #2 and found it so-so. #1 was great. I had it on vinyl but lost it in a move. I am not a total bluegrass fan, nor do I play one on TV, but his CD has not a rough edge like a lot of BG stuff does. Glad I gave y'all a heads-up. bph |

Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Oct 02 - 08:06 PM Have to along with you on that one Khandu. Number one was HUGE fun, and introduced a lot of pop fans to Jimmy Martin and the rest of them. Number two was pretty unexciting. Number three sounds like it might be decent music, but no surprises.....wonder if Bill Mcuen (sp) was involved. Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: khandu Date: 01 Oct 02 - 07:58 PM Number 1 is my Number 1 recomendation to everyone who is interested in hearing great bluegrass/country music. Number 2 I recommend to no one. I did not even know #3 existed! Glad you informed me! khandu |
Subject: Review: Will The Circle Be Unbroken#3 From: ballpienhammer Date: 01 Oct 02 - 07:15 PM Holy Cow! It don't git much better'n this! McCourys, Watson, Cash,Scruggs, Emmy Lou Harris, Dwight Yokum, Willie Nelson,Jeff Hanna,Iris DeMent and lots more. This is a must for American folk lovers and bluegrassers as well. This is more an applaud than a review but it's a dbl CD set and well worth the $15 I gave. bph |
