I dunno about cheap CD production but I can certainly do you CD cover and inlay design and artwork to a professional standard at a price you can afford!

I've been a graphic designer/illustrator for over 25 years as well as performing on the folk scene semi professionally for a bit longer than that, recently I've been doing CD covers for some artists I know.
I did Alastair Russell's (ex Battlefield band) for his album 'Getting to the Border' and I've also done a couple for local bands in my area (West Yorkshire)so if you would like to know even more give me a contact number and I'll let you know!

Burning your own CD's is easy - making professional (ie permanet ink) labels and J cards is a bit nmore tricky. Anyone can do the art work but it takes someone who has done it a lot to avoid the worst mistakes and still make it interesting. The thing about doing some of it yourself is pay as you go.
About 4 years ago an early English band told me they paid less than £1 (each) for a single batch of 3000 labelled CD's, Jewel Case J cards and I think that included the artwork. And they sold them inside of a year at £12 each at gigs.
How cheap is a run like that now?

Home-burned CDs do not have the same quality or last as long as commercially-burned. Look up the old threads on this to see what I am referring to.

The web site listed don't state whether the cds are burned (home or commercially) or pressed. Anyone ventured further with them who can answer that?

A: For practical purposes, a well treated CDr will outlive you! The "gold" formula CDr's are expected to have a life span of over 100 years, so pass it on to your heirs

I've got Cylinders (wax), Vinyl, tape (that don't last long!!!) etc. I think worrying about "how long a CDR will last" is not a problem as all the recording media that preceeded it won't hold a candle to it, CDR is one of the best formats (if not "THE BEST") to allow smaller artist to get their music to the people and offers good value for money - in the early days of CDs the press put them out as indestructible - They weren't - I have early pressed CDs that the surface structure has broken down!

Modern CDRs are far better than early pressed CD - and yes modern pressed CDs are better than CDRs - but not by a lot!

I just hope that my music and people wanting to listen to it will last as long as the CDRs I've recorded onto will.

Point(s) taken Flare, but having just realised that several dozen CDR that I did only last year are 'going off', I'm a bit wary, especially as the aim of this would be to sell them to 'fans'.

It must be said that the discs I used were NOT expensive ones - or even modestly priced! - so I suppose it serves me right. And they were only for archiving tapes so it is only me to be concerned. Program of re-copying about to start. Ho hum!

I have to say that come next year when the band I'm in is looking for duplication I shall consider these guys seriously.

Nickp - they seem to be offering a run of 20 CDs for £200. Since pressings need a glass master which costs £150 to make it's fairly obvious they are making CDRs.

I'm making CDRs too - the only complaint I've had about one that wouldn't play was from someone who has an old CD player that is generally picky and in particular doesn't like CDs with self-adhesive labels on them.Using a Mac she copied it to another CDR which worked perfectly.

There is a newish CDR dye that is very pale green in colour and I believe that is more long lasting that its predecessors. Certainly some of the older dark gold and blue coloured CDRs were very unreliable.

I attribute success to the use of a Plextor CD burner - more expensive than some, but it seems to burn at x24 onto cheap bulk media with no trouble.

BTW I recommend Value Media in the UK for supplies of CDRs, jewel cases and related bits and pieces.
