Does anyone have the 78 Ole Buttermilk Sky by Lonzo and Oscar with their Winston County Pea Pickers? The part where they are talking is the part I'm trying to figure out. I have the lyrics to the actual song. I have most of it figured out, and it's here. Can someone fill in the blanks?

He's about the best I ever heard
Ain't that purtty
I love to hear you play, you're good, you know what _______
Is that so Lonzo? Yeah, I love to hear you
Yeah, you're pretty too Lonzo ha! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, whew!
____ _____ and let's sing the song

I have similar questions with My Adobe Hacienda and Girls Don't Nag Your Husbands. Can someone help with these?

Thanks in advance,

P.J.

OLD BUTTERMILK SKY

(Hoagy Carmichael)(c)

lyrics

provided for research and private study only (see above for copyright details):

       Ole buttermilk sky

       Ole buttermilk sky
       I'm asking you why
you gotta keep it in mind tonight
you gotta keep those clouds from sight

       Ole buttermilk sky
don't you fail me when I need you most
hang your moon above a hitching post
hitch me to the one I love

I'm gonna ask him that question, that question
do you darlin' do you do?
             it'll be easy, so easy
if I could only count on you

       Ole buttermilk sky
       I'm asking you why (no-ay-no)
you gotta keep it in mind tonight
gotta keep those clouds from sight

       Ole buttermilk sky
don't you fail me when I need you most
hang your moon above a hitching post
hitch me to the one I love

       INSTRUMENTAL – piano solo

I'm gonna ask him that question, that question
do you darlin' do you do?
             it'll be easy, so easy
if I could only count on you

       Ole buttermilk sky
       I'm telling you why
you gotta keep it in mind tonight
you gotta keepa those clouds from sight

       Ole buttermilk sky
don't you fail me when I need you most
hang your moon above a hitching post
hitch me to the one I love

hang your moon above a hitching post
hitch me to the one I love

hang your moon above a hitching post
hitch me to the one I love

No
's included, trusting in the new system. Lets see how it works.

Transcribed from sheet music:

OLE BUTTERMILK SKY
By Hoagy Carmichael and Jack Brooks ©1946
From the film:  Canyon Passage

Ole buttermilk sky,
I'm a-keepin' my eye peeled on you.
What's the good word tonight?
Are you gonna be mellow tonight?

Ole buttermilk sky,
Can't you see my little donkey and me?
We're as happy as a Christmas tree,
Headin' for the one I love.

|: I'm gonna pop 'er the question, that question,
Do you, darlin', do you do?
It'll be easy, so easy,
If I can only bank on you,

Ole buttermilk sky,
I'm a-tellin' you why. Now you know.
Keep it in mind tonight.
Keep a-brushin' those clouds from sight.

Ole buttermilk sky,
Don't you fail me when I'm needin' you most.
Hang a moon above her hitchin' post.
Hitch me to the one I love. :|

You can if you try.
Don't tell me no lie.
Will you be mellow and bright tonight,
Ole buttermilk sky?

Peter, I see now that you wanted the lyrics to a specific version, not the original ones. I hope having the original ones posted here (with credit given to both composers/lyricists) will be of help to some folks.

Sorry I can't help with the Lonzo and Oscar lyrics.

Genie

I always like to see the original version whenever possible, even if it's not what I would choose to sing.

I think it's kind of sad that some people aren't interested in learning the history of a song, but they only want to learn to sing exactly what someone else is already singing.

Well, there ARE those of us who appreciate those originals, and certainly admire your diligence in bringing these old threads up as well.

I'm trying hard to remember what version we had at home, near as I can figure, it was the Paul Weston version. I can hear it in my mind, but only fragments after so many years.

Of course, asking for Lonzo and Oscar (or Homer and Jethro for that matter) is asking for something entirely different.

This was interesting. Someone asked Tom Skilling, the longtime meteorologist at WGN in Chicago what exactly was a Buttermilk Sky?

His answer: The song that you refer to, "Old Buttermilk Sky," was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Jack Brooks in 1946 for the movie "Canyon Passage" and was actually nominated for an Oscar. The phrase "buttermilk sky" refers to a sky that is peppered with patches of midlevel altocumulus clouds or high-level cirrocumulus clouds that tend to take on a globular appearance similar to the texture of cultured milk. These clouds are more commonly referred to as forming a "mackerel sky," especially when the cloud elements line up in rows resembling the scales or spots of that fish. A mackerel sky is often an indication of the presence of high-level atmospheric moisture and instability and may portend thunderstorms.

Google Images has lots of cloud pictures labeled "Buttermilk Sky." I hope the people who labeled those images know what they're talking about, meteorologically. The definition quoted above means nothing to me.

Peter J. Gossett, who started this thread with a request for the lyrics to Lonzo & Oscar's version of OLE BUTTERMILK SKY, must have gotten an answer elsewhere, or else became satisfied with his own transcription, because he posted the lyrics on his own web site, here.

Apparently Lonzo & Oscar stuck pretty close to Carmichael's original lyrics, only adding some dialectical pronunciations and some "patter." I don't think it's worth copying their version here.

The first two stanzas make that very unlikely.

Ole buttermilk sky,
I'm a-keepin' my eye peeled on you.
What's the good word tonight?
Are you gonna be mellow tonight?

Ole buttermilk sky,
Can't you see my little donkey and me?
We're as happy as a Christmas tree,
Headin' for the one I love.
