Subject: Anyone heard of The Jolly Beggarmen?
From: Brad
Date: 29 May 98 - 10:52 PM

This is my first post, but have been amazed at the knowledge of Irish music. Does anyone have any information on a band called The Jolly Beggarmen? A friend of mine bought a double cassette set of theirs in Ireland five years ago, but I've never seen anything else except a version of "Only Our Rivers Run Free" on a compilation set. Any info on who they are or how to get their material would be appreciated.

I have a triple cassette set from Ireland with a few songs of the Jolly Beggarman. I have no infor about this group; I though it was the name of a single person as I have listed it as Jolly Beggarman. Hovewer, I'm going to post a new thread with the lyrics of a song (Streets of New York) song by this band. Ciao

I have a CD called "the Very Best Of Irish Rebel Songs" done by the Jolly Beggarmen. I have also found their work , uncredited, on another Irish Music compilation disk (which I cant recall right now).

Good tight group.

Apparently, their 40-song album is available on CD or cassette from Irish Records International, Inc. Would you recommend it? It's a little hard to figure out the catalogue - this could be a collection of 40 drinking songs.

Can't help you on the "jolly Beggarmen" but there's a Belfast group in Orange County, CA called "The Irish Beggarmen" that are pretty good. They might be able to direct you toward the other guys, their address is 4036 Meadowbrook st, Orange, CA 92665 714-637-1087 ask for Frank Murphy. good luck

I bought the CD mentioned by Joe Offer: it is OK, much to my surprise. I was halfway expecting the oompa-pa tape I've been fooled by several times before. It is a varied group of songs, but is mixed poorly. It sounds like a studio tape dubbed with artificial pub sounds (laughing, singing along, clanking of glasses) to make it sound live. It is two CDs for $16, and probably worth the money if you like the group. I really like the band, and would love to get the album The Very Best of Irish Rebel Songs. THey seem to be their strong suit. Bo - Where did you get that CD?

I have two Jolly Beggermen tapes and both are titled "The very best of Irish rebel songs". However, one tape has a Volume I after the title. That one is put out by EMI, no date given, and the second by Fiesta Record Company, Inc. in 1987. Different songs on each.

I don't know if these are on CD.

If you want to know the songs on each tape e-mail me. mim@teleport.com

The Jolly Beggarmen were formed in approx 1976 and lasted more than 15 years. The main members were Joe White, Tommy Jenkinson, Jonny Carrol, Paddy Quigley, Eamonn O'Rourke Snr. Also from time to time there was Kevin Molloy, Donal Nagle and a couple more that I don't remember. They recorded On the Dole and The Inner City Song which reached the top ten in Ireland. They also travelled extensively around europe and the UK.

Eamonn, I asked about the Inner City Song in a thread last year, and nobody seemed to know it or the band. Could you tell me which album it was recorded on, what year, whether it's still available and who wrote it? That would just about make my day!

Susanne,
The Inner City song was written by Don Baker for the Jolly Beggarmen and it reached no 2 in the Irish Charts... Don Baker is also on the single playing the harmonica... you will find info on this on Don Bakers Web site. Tommy Jenkinson and Joe White are still playing music...

Hi Brad,

Charlie Clarke was my Dad. He was one of the founder members of The Jolly Beggarmen. Their record label was Dolphin Records (try dolphin traders - www.dolphin-dara.ie). They have a couple of shops in Dublin, one on Talbot St, where they sell cds etc direct to the public- if I remember correctly.

The Jolly Beggarmen recorded a number of lp's. I have copies of "20 Great Irish Drinking Songs" (cassette and lp) and "40 Irish Drinking Songs" (cd), but I'm sure there was at least one more.

According to Dad, these songs were recorded on an old style tape recorder in the pub during a gig. Hence why they're crackly, and you have people shouting out loud at various times.

Hope this will help at least a bit - if you need any additional information let me know.

Wendy

This band is one of my favourites. Does anyone know which one of them sang The Patriot Game, The Dying Rebel and Only Our Rivers Run Free? Would love to know also who was the main singer (Sea Around Us, James Connolly, etc.). From the above it sounds like the latter may have been Tommy Jenkinson. Or is it Jenkins?

I played tenor banjo with the band during 1970-71 and have great memories of Mahars of Moore ST O Maras at Aston Quay The Embankment and others. I had great times with Tommy Jenkinson Charlie Clarke John Mc Keever(The Westerners) and Patsy Watchorn now o the Dubliners I am now back in my native Scotland and living in Falkirk. I saw the Beggarmen in Dublin a few times ... probably mid 90's with Tommy and Joe White (I can't remember who else at the time). I always thought they were very good live. Why is it so hard to find more info on them? I have pages on them at my website ... and that information comes from either the recordings I have ... or this post. Please keep the information on the Jolly B's coming!

'79 dublin - songs that brought the tears and questions of politics, love and life - laughter and dancing - pints late nights after hours - hot whiskey with lemon and cloves -precious sharing of joys and sorrows through the songs - strangers that you felt you knew and knew you more than any had before through the music, the reactions to the words and the beat, the flash of an eye, - the smoke filled rooms and the smell of the fire-   i think of that time and place    never said goodbye    still in my heart-      yes i remember them well

I came across The Jolly Beggarmen by wading through LPs at a folk festival. I was blown away by their raw brilliance. The LP I picked up was their early 1974 Olympic Record OBL106. It is signed by all the band (Charlie Clarke, Tommy Jenkinson, Kevin Molloy, Tommy Molloy and Joe White). I wish I had seen them perform. (Malc - s.battybatty@btinternet.com)

Hi,

The Jolly Beggarmen played in and around Dublin. I rember them in the Berni Inn Pub on Nassau Street in Dublin around 1973/1974. They were great but I heard that they broke up in the mid 1980's. Maybe it was due to the poor Irish economy at the time.

The Jolly Beggarmen hail from County Tyrone, (near Dungannon). I haven't heard much about them in the past 20 years. The main singer was Sean Dynes. I bought an album of theirs in 1970 but it has been mislaid over the years. Best wishes, Brendan.
