I and some friends shared a house in Cork in the late 70s. Saw the Beggarmen in a pub and invited them back to stay over in the house.
A massive session followed. Great talent.

Wendy, Don't know if you still read this thread or not. I have only come across it. Am not familiar with how it works. I have never contributed to anything like this before. Just to let you know that I knew your Dad in the late sixties. We started a little group called The Waxers (Waxer being your Dad's nickname). There were three of us in the group: your Dad - lead singer, Jimmy McKenna - guitar, and myself on tenor banjo - Shay Mc Donald. We played in O'Meara's on Aston Quay On Monday nights and the Castle Inn in Lord Edward Street on Sunday mornings. We used to play at the session O'Donoghue's on Saturday nights. I'm sure you're aware that our photo is still on the wall there in the back lounge from over fifty years ago. I was sorry to hear your Dad has passed on. He was a great ballad singer. I am living now in Wexford and visit Dublin now and again. I would love to have a chat with you when we visit Dublin again but I don't know how to go about it. You mightn't even be aware of this correspondence. Hopefully you will see it.

I remember the Berni Inn, Nassau Street, Dublin 2. It is now The Porter House pub & brewery.

For over 60 years of the 20th century the building Jammets Restaurant.

https://arrow.dit.ie/jamres/

I don't remember any beggarmen,jolly or otherwise,in Restaurant Jammet.
Patrick Kavannagh was wined and dined there by John Betjeman during the Emergency (commonly known elsewhere as World War 2) when the latter was "Press Attaché" to the UK Representative in Eire.

All the Best from Ireland vol. 2 is an all time favorite. The bottles clinking away and the joy and sadness of the tunes puts me in the pub and I sing and play along. I will play this album until I can’t.

Just to add a little confusion: I have a cassette tape entitled 'The Beggermen,' presumably a duo comprising Seamus Kennedy and Tom O'Carroll, since no variant of a song by that title is on it.
This is either a copy or a private production, hardly a commercial production.
They are skillful performers, and sing very fast.

Would that be the Seamus who is a Mudcatter?

The Jolly Beggarmen hail from County Tyrone, (near Dungannon). I haven't heard much about them in the past 20 years. The main singer was Sean Dynes. I bought an album of theirs in 1970 but it has been mislaid over the years. Best wishes, Brendan.

I hand't heard of them until I came across two songs they recorded - 'Clare to Here' and 'The Banks of the Rose's on a collection entitled "The very best of Irish Ballads" purchased when I was in Ireland a few years ago.   I like their sounds but they do sound a little like the Fureys to me....

Hi,

The Jolly Beggarmen played in and around Dublin. I rember them in the Berni Inn Pub on Nassau Street in Dublin around 1973/1974. They were great but I heard that they broke up in the mid 1980's. Maybe it was due to the poor Irish economy at the time.

I came across The Jolly Beggarmen by wading through LPs at a folk festival. I was blown away by their raw brilliance. The LP I picked up was their early 1974 Olympic Record OBL106. It is signed by all the band (Charlie Clarke, Tommy Jenkinson, Kevin Molloy, Tommy Molloy and Joe White). I wish I had seen them perform. (Malc - s.battybatty@btinternet.com)

'79 dublin - songs that brought the tears and questions of politics, love and life - laughter and dancing - pints late nights after hours - hot whiskey with lemon and cloves -precious sharing of joys and sorrows through the songs - strangers that you felt you knew and knew you more than any had before through the music, the reactions to the words and the beat, the flash of an eye, - the smoke filled rooms and the smell of the fire-   i think of that time and place    never said goodbye    still in my heart-      yes i remember them well

I saw the Beggarmen in Dublin a few times ... probably mid 90's with Tommy and Joe White (I can't remember who else at the time). I always thought they were very good live. Why is it so hard to find more info on them? I have pages on them at my website ... and that information comes from either the recordings I have ... or this post. Please keep the information on the Jolly B's coming!

I played tenor banjo with the band during 1970-71 and have great memories of Mahars of Moore ST O Maras at Aston Quay The Embankment and others. I had great times with Tommy Jenkinson Charlie Clarke John Mc Keever(The Westerners) and Patsy Watchorn now o the Dubliners I am now back in my native Scotland and living in Falkirk. Would love to know also who was the main singer (Sea Around Us, James Connolly, etc.). From the above it sounds like the latter may have been Tommy Jenkinson. Or is it Jenkins?

Hi Brad,

Charlie Clarke was my Dad. He was one of the founder members of The Jolly Beggarmen. Their record label was Dolphin Records (try dolphin traders - www.dolphin-dara.ie). They have a couple of shops in Dublin, one on Talbot St, where they sell cds etc direct to the public- if I remember correctly.

The Jolly Beggarmen recorded a number of lp's. I have copies of "20 Great Irish Drinking Songs" (cassette and lp) and "40 Irish Drinking Songs" (cd), but I'm sure there was at least one more.

According to Dad, these songs were recorded on an old style tape recorder in the pub during a gig. Hence why they're crackly, and you have people shouting out loud at various times.

Hope this will help at least a bit - if you need any additional information let me know.

Wendy
