Earlier this week there was a thread about a song and tunebook we could download. I tried to do it on a floppy but didnt have enough space to get it all. It has now vanished and I cant remember what it was called. What was it? Do I need to use a CD to download it?

G'day fogie,

I downloaded to a computer folder (6.7 MB?)- and then unzipped to something a lot more (~ 35 MB?). If you need to take it somewhere else, download to a folder - THEN write it to a CD (as I will, to pass it on to friends).

The old one (1999) did come in floppy-sized segments ... about 6 or 7 floppies needed, but a CD is a lot handier ... today.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Hi,Fogie - the Digital Tradition Download Page is here (click). You download the file, use an UnZip program to open it up in to the several operating files, and run it. It takes about ten megabytes on your hard drive. You can't run it froma floppy disk.
If you prefer, you can run it on a CD-ROM, available for $5 from

The Digital Tradition
28 Powell Street
Greenwich, CT 06831

If you don't understand how to download and unzip the Digital Tradition, you may be better off to get the CD, or to view the songs online here at Mudcat.
Note that we now have a pronter-friendly format you can select for all our songs and messages- you'll find the link for it at the bottom of the song or message.

It's a bit more than 10Mb, Joe. According to my machine the downloaded DT installation is 18.9Mb, but as the minimum file size on my machine at work is 32Kb, it actually uses up no less than 142Mb.

The 4025 tunefiles are only 3.41Mb, but they use up 125Mb of disk space here. My machine at home has an 8Kb sector size so they use up just over 30Mb there - still nearly 90% wasted space.

see the advantages of older technology? I have multiple copies and three of them take up less then 100 megs WITH the addition of the zip files, Noteworthy, songwright and all my extra songfiles.

Yes, the DOS version keeps all the tunes in a zip file and unzips one
when requested, and deletes it sfter it's played. Much more environment friendly!
