Subject: RE: Lyr Req: toddlin whoam From: GUEST Date: 03 Oct 02 - 07:58 AM Those lyrics sound about right from memory of Owdham Edge. I think that Harry Boardman should be credited with the words but I haven't got the LP any more to check. ....As for "Summertime" look here:- Summertime |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: toddlin whoam From: nutty Date: 03 Oct 02 - 08:53 AM Harry Boardman may be responsible for the tune but the words were written by Edwin Waugh 1817 - 1890 |

If 'tis, anyone know what 'cant' means in the context of the song? Originally heard it on 'Owdum Edge' Cheers |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: toddlin whoam From: Rumncoke Date: 20 Sep 06 - 05:37 PM I used to sing that, until I moved so far South it needed an interpreter. In my book it is much the same Toddling home from market's rant Toddling home content and cant My head in me hat and me feet in me shoen I'm toddling home lad, none too soon I'm fain to be toddling home. Toddling home to t' fireside bliss Toddling home to t' childers' kiss God bless yond bit of curling smoke God bless yond cosy chimbly nook I'm fain to be toddling home. Toddling home to t' twittering songs Toddling home to t' prattling tongues Toddling home to seek for rest Wi' t' wife and t' little brids in t' nest I'm fain to be toddling home. I sing it 'in a Yorkshire tone' but I think that the source is the same recording, it has, however, been assimilated - 'chimbly' - that's my grandad. I think that 'cant' here means a little tipsy. If something is canted over, it is at a slant, off the vertical or horisontal line. Twittering is right I think - wittering is a little hard to define, but going on and on about some minor grievance would be wittering. Being brought up wi' t' explosive t' I would advise practising it carefully before trying it out in public. Peggy Seager might have laughed hearing someone attempting an American song, and been gracious enough to apologies, but a non native speaker attempting a Northern dialect has been known to have me rolling on the floor totally incoherent with wicked mirth, though not recently. |
