I'm sure that Norman probably has as much variation in any two versions as the two posted above.

Non-rail fans might be interested in knowing that the Southern RR Co. had a circular logo on the sides of their rolling stock with the motto, "Southern Serves The South."
I believe the "Old 97" was on the Southern RR Line.

Good job, I've been playing this tune without lyrics, too. Big thanks to both of you.

It's another one of those great songs to play and sing. Folks respond to it well, always seems to generate toe tapping, and smiles.

I was surprised not to be able to find the lyrics on the web. Bigchuck posted while I was transcribing it. There are enough minor textual variations from Bigchuck's version in the recording I was working from that I reckon it is worth posting as well:

I didn't know that, Art. Great song, though. Anyone who loves American folk music and doesn't already have a copy of Whiskey Before Breakfast should run right out and get one. If the store doesn't have a copy, grab whatever they do have by Norman Blake; you won't be disappointed.

The original Slow Train Through Georgia was a book -- from the 1800s -- post Civil War. Humorous sights and tales and jokes and songs about the train and what it passed along the way and what the passengers saw and gabbed about. I used to have a copy---but can't find it now.
