Tech: Help: Cookies

Not the usual request how to reset one's Mudcat cookie.

I am trying to log on to my American bank account, and am getting the message

"It seems that your browser has cookies switched off. Please switch cookies on - restart your browser and try again."

I am using a borrowed computer using Windows XP, have already set the privacy slider thingy to the lowest security level ("Accept all cookies"} and reset the computer twice, but still get this message. Is it me, or them? I am on AOL, if that is relevant.

cookie control is usually in netscape or explorer - check out security on your browser

One of the on line banks has been unavailable for a week. Is that you? If your drive is big enough, I suggest keeting several browsers for special moments like this.

I'm not a techie, but it sounds to me like the bank is suspicious of persons purporting to be you and using someone else's computer. I think it wants to be in touch with a browser that already has your cookie on it. Of course, I'm often wrong. Just an idea.

I discovered that I can log on through Internet Explorer, but I still get the above message if I try to log on though the AOL browser.

Murray, I don't know from the AOL browser unless, in fact, it's Netscape. Which is likely. You should find Preferences under Edit menu item. That is Edit | Preferenced | Advanced | Cookies.

I don't want cookies on my computer unless I want them. (Like at Mudcat.) So I set Netscape to Accept All. Then I Find the file cookies.txt and right-click Preferences. I then click make file Read-only.

The web site thinks I'll accept cookies so it works but my cookie file stays pristine & pure. If I want a site's cookies, as you may need at your bank, I uncheck Read-only while at the site then re-check it before I leave the site.

(This won't work with IE. Different system.)

Murray - are you behind a firewall and/or a content filter - depending on setting either could be causing the problem.

AOL is basically IE, not netscape, but it makes you do things its own way... AARGH

Abby, the browser is as Noreen says MSIE version 6.0 (according to the AOL system information.)

MMario I don't think I am using any protection at all, as far as I am aware. Still as long as I can get into my account through Internet Explorer, it isn't a problem, just a puzzle.

Just means I have to type the URL each time instead of clicking on a bookmark. Ain't life a bitch ....
