Subject: by whom?... From: plastik192@aol.com Date: 30 May 98 - 02:40 AM have you heard the song in the mercedes commerical? do you know who sings the song in it? this is how i think one verse goes: "i'm falling in love again, i never wanted to, what am i to do? i can't help it..." a woman sings it, and it sounds like it's from the ww2 era. please help. |
Subject: RE: Falling in Love Again. From: Joe Offer Date: 30 May 98 - 04:35 AM It was recorded by the great Marlene Dietrich. You'll find the lyrics at Rabid Squirrel's Jazz Archive (sorry about the popup ads). The Squirrel won't tell you, so I will - the song was written by Frederick Hollander, and copyrighted in 1930 by Ufaton Verlagsgesellschaft - so maybe there was a connection with Dietrich from the very beginning. I think there's a recording of it on one of the Linda Ronstadt "Round Midnight" albums. Good albums. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: From: katlaughing Date: 29 May 02 - 11:08 PM My brother bought an album of Marlene's in Bavaria in the 1960's. She sing this song on it and it is gorgeous. |
Subject: RE: Ic Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss From: Genie Date: 30 May 02 - 03:08 AM Dietrich sang this song in the classic film "The Blue Angel" (Das Blauen Engel)--in German, originally, I think. The German version of the song is "Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss Auf Liebe Eingetellt." ("I am from head to foot in love [whatever "eingetellt" means].) Diese lied [this song] is on her "Wiedersehen Mit Marlene" ["Reunion With Marlene"] album--one of my favorites. I'll post a link to the song (if Masato or Wolfgang doesn't beat me to it). Genie |
Subject: RE: From: Genie Date: 30 May 02 - 03:39 AM English lyrics: "Falling in Love Again" by Frederick Hollander, Sammy Lerner Falling in love again, Never wanted to. What am I to do? I can't help it. Love's always been my game, Play it how I may. I was made that way. I can't help it. Men cluster to me like moths around a flame, And, if their wings burn, I know I'm not to blame. Falling in love again, Never wanted to. What am I to do? I can't help it. more info here |
Subject: RE: From: Micca Date: 30 May 02 - 01:28 PM and of course the memory of Noreen at Towersey (On Dress-up night) singing this ala Marlene, suitably attired in a slinky dress (from Second-hand Sue) Men cluster to me like moths around a flame, And, if their wings burn, I know I'm not to blame. Sizzzzlllle WOW!!!!!! |

Subject: RE: Falling In Love Again From: Genie Date: 30 May 02 - 04:35 PM Yeah, Kat. Dietrich left Germany because the Nazis took over, and ended that "self-imposed exile" 20 years later by returning and doing that "Wiedersehen Mit Marlene" concert. My favorite song on the album is "Lili Marlene," but the audience seemed partial to "Die Fesche Lola" and "Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss...". BTW, I'm pretty sure the German title translates, idiomatically, as "I'm head over heels in love." (More literally it means "I am adjusted [rearranged?] from head to foot [by, from, for] love." Subject: RE: From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 May 02 - 05:40 PM This brings back the happy and hilarious memory of Pete Coe impersonating Marlene singing "Falling in love again" in the Sidmouth Folk Quiz... |
Subject: RE: From: katlaughing Date: 30 May 02 - 06:02 PM Yeah, Genie, I loved "Lili Marlene," too, but "Falling in love" shows off that deep rich tone of hers so well. I don't have the album nearby, as it's my brother's, but there was another which sticks in my head, she almost speaks part of it...damn can't remember the words, but I can sure hear her voice and the tune! Off to see if I can find the info online, maybe with a link to the song. kat |
Subject: RE: From: katlaughing Date: 30 May 02 - 06:16 PM Okay! Found a site with some samples for free, with downloads for a fee. Lots of info, plus it looks as though they've re-rleaseed a lot fo her stuff on CD, remastered, etc. Here's the link: Marlene Dietrich. The song I was thinking of was "Johnny, when do you have a birthday?" I think.:-) kat |
Subject: RE: I'm falling in love again... From: Genie Date: 31 May 02 - 04:16 PM Yeah, Kat, that was the song that came to mind when I read your next-to-last post: Johnny, wenn du Geburtstag hast (I'm not sure I spelled everything correctly. Vo ist Wolfgang when you need him?) Genie |
