Subject: Lyr Req: Boer war song Kimberly diamond mine
From: GUEST,Tom Murphy
Date: 04 Oct 02 - 03:08 PM

My grandfather sang a song to me in the late 60's about the Kimberly Diamond mines he had passed by during the Boer War. Does anyone know anything else about the song and the remaining lyrics?

I've just returned from Kimberly, the place where diamonds grow,
And mister________ _________ is me style.
I'll buy up all the racing yachts and then I'll buy the earth,
And I ain't a bit particular what the price is,
For I'm the diamond king and the ladies like my style.
They can't resist my smile. I kill at half a mile.
O those diamonds! I'll dazzle them everywhere.
I'm a regular Barnie Bernatta. I'm a real live millionaire.

Thanks in advance.

Probably not the song you are seeking. There is a song by Marais/Miranda---Train to Kimberley.    Not about diamonds as I recall, merely about the place and the train.

The name in the song is probably Barney Barnato. Click the link to see an article in which he is mentioned. From there you can follow the links to more information about the Kimberley area and the diamond mines. I didn't see anything there about a song, however.

Oxford University has the sheet music, described thus:

THE DIAMOND KING, or, A REAL LIVE MILLIONAIRE: a skit suggested by the Barney Barnato craze
Words by Bennett Scott; music by A. J. Mills; sung by D. J. McCarthy
London: Francis, Day & Hunter, ©1895.

First line: I've just arriv'd from Kimberley.
First line of chorus: I'm the di'mond king.

Jim-

That citation certainly looks like a hot lead.

Jim, I think you have nailed it. I just can't seem to find the site on Oxford University.
Thanks

Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads: The allegro Catalogue of Ballads

I searched the music broadsides in several ways (author, performer, subject, keywords, etc.) and don't find mention. But sheet music could end up in so many different types of collections.

B.I. Barnato, a memoir (1897) is a Google book online. Scanned at the NY Public Library and looks downloadable.

Ah! Went back to the general library catalog (SOLO) and found it.

Location: Bodleian Library
call number: Mus. 5c c.19 (158)
Type: Music/closed stack
Barcode: N13726468
Item type: score

I saved a citation for it to the Mudcat facebook page. I have a screen capture I'll see if I can upload that for you, the details portion of the record. You should be able to see it here

This isn't a full-text citation, this is what you need when you walk in the door to ask someone to go get it for you or take you to look at it. Or perhaps an accommodating library exchange program will get a copy of it through Interlibrary Loan?

Bringing this back to the top, in case interested parties didn't notice the pages linked to. The links should be durable (I hope).
