Subject: RE: Lyr Req: u leave to the sound of a marching drum From: open mike Date: 06 Oct 02 - 10:57 PM oh goodie--this is one i can answer--it is by Silly Wizard and it is called Lover's Heart. It has one of the best lines of all times in it:iy goes something like this: I will not be a soldier, musician is my trade, for I'd rather melt a cold hard heart than pierce it with a blade" I will look for my song book and transcribe it more completely for you a.s.a.p. |
Subject: Lyr Add: LOVER'S HEART (A Stewart, P Cunningham) From: open mike Date: 06 Oct 02 - 11:03 PM and here's the rest of the story-- from the data base here I couldn't find the song book but once you know the title and artist it is in the digi-trad list. LOVERS HEART (Andy Stewart, Phil Cunningham) 1. She was in the flowery garden when first she caught my eye, And I just a marching soldier. She smiled as I passed by. The flowers she held were fresh and fair. Her lips were full and red, And as I passed that shady bower, these words to me she said: CHORUS: "Last night we spoke of love. Now we're forced to part. You leave to the sound of a marching drum and the beat of a lover's heart." 2. She was by the shore in the evening when next I saw my dear. Running barefoot by the waterside, she called as I drew near. The sunlight glanced at the water's edge making fire of her auburn hair. My young heart danced at her parting words that hung in the evening air: CHORUS 3. She was on the Strand next morning when orders came to sail, And as we slipped our ropes away, I watched her from the rail. She threw me a rose, which fell between us, and floated on the bay, And as our ship pulled from the shore, I heard her call and say: CHORUS 4. Now the soldier's life won't suit me. Sweet music is my trade, For I'd rather melt the hardest heart than pierce it with a blade. Let the time be short till I return to my home in the mountains high, And the loving girl who stole my heart with these words as I passed by: CHORUS Recorded by Silly Wizard on "A Glint of Silver" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: u leave to the sound of a marching drum From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Oct 02 - 01:14 AM Mr. Happy, have you been searching for songs before your request them? As part of the Mudcat upgrade, the Digitrad and Forum Search index was updated, and everything is working smoothly. If you put a distinctive phrase line marching drum into the search box, you'd find the song is in the Digital Tradition. Thanks. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: u leave to the sound of a marching drum From: Nerd Date: 08 Oct 02 - 11:00 AM Mr Happy, sometimes it helps to whittle down your search to a small phrase, otherwise a single wrong word will scuttle you. But "leave to the sound of a marching drum" does turn up the song on a DT search, so maybe the search engine was too busy or down briefly. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lover's Heart (from Silly Wizard) From: Mr Happy Date: 29 Sep 05 - 08:33 PM Anyone have tab or dots for this, please? I can remember the tune for the chorus, but not for the verses. I've tried the verses against the chorus tune but I've an inkling that the verses tune, though similar to the chorus one, has some slight variances. Can anyone help out? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lover's Heart (from Silly Wizard) From: harpmolly Date: 04 Oct 05 - 10:24 PM By the way, I'm pretty sure (from having listened to this song a million times--it's one of my all-time favorites) that the second-to-last line is actually: "Let the time be short till I return to my home in the North of Skye..." What a great song. I'll join the chorus of praise for the wonderful line "I'd rather melt the hardest heart than pierce it with a blade..." Molly |
