While looking for the chords to "Rainbow Connection" today, I came across this parody (see www.songworm.com )

Thought you folks might ejnoy it.

The Road-kill Collection

Parody of ‘The Rainbow Connection’ (Paul Williams and Ken Ascher)
Parody lyrics ©7/23/95 by Bob Kanefsky.

Why are there so many songs about road kill,
And what they’ve all got inside?
Road kill’s a tragedy, disgusting extrusions,
And road kill had nowhere to hide.
Fresh-grated bunny can never be funny,
But I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday I’ll show you my road kill collection
By Bogle, and others, and me.

Who said that every wish will be heard and answered
When wished on a turkey bone?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
As many poor turkeys have known.
Wishes so fleeting that keep us meat-eating
Are ones with which I can’t agree.
But someday I’ll show you my road kill collection
By Bogle, and others, and me.

All of us laughing out loud!
We know that it’s s’posed to be tragic.

Alt verse 3:
Have you been half asleep, and have you heard screaming?
I hear them calling my name.
Are they fresh pancakes, or dead battered bunnies?
The two many be one and the same.
I’ve heard them screaming too long to enjoy themÑ
Except with a nice cup of tea.
Someday I’ll show you my road kill collection
By Bogle, and others, and me.

‘Normal’ verse 3:
Have you been half asleep, and have you been driving?
(‘He just ran right into my way.’)
Is it the same drive that calls the young racer,
And calls the young kitten to play?
I don’t try fighting the urge for songwriting.
It’s something that I have to be.
Someday I’ll show you my road kill collection
By Bogle, and others, and me.

We used to have this restaurant in Greenville on the shores of Moosehead Lake called the Road Kill Cafe with the most amazing menues. This tasteful parody would have fitted right in.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Some of our Festivals have been enlivened with a food stall called Roadkill - a wonderful business selling lots of yummy stuff. Not a roadkill in sight, either on the menu or on the decoration, tho they did have lots of long colorful streamers waving in the breeze - maybe the streamers did start out as short bits of paper/plastic?

This time of year in England, Fox would definitely be on the menu. The number of foxes killed by hunts is infinitesimal compared with those hit by cars. Last year I saw a car (driven by a lady who looked as though she probably supported the League against Cruel Sports) hit a fox and leave it badly injured in the road. She must have known what she had done, but she made no attempt to stop. I reversed back and drove over it's head to put it out of it's misery. When I got out of the car to check that it was dead, another woman driver accused ME of cruelty !

I know how you must've felt, Dave. I once saw a squirrel get hit by a car ahead of me but be left only severely (and probably mortally) wounded. I didn't have time to reflect long, but I did what seemed like the only humane thing, namely, try to run directly over it, to put a quick end to it. Unfortunately, some folks can't distinguish between the goriness of a method of killing and the amount of pain and suffering it inflicts on the victim. (I wonder if the woman who accused you of cruelty had intended to pick up the wounded fox and take it to a vet.)

Back to the roadkill parody theme:

Is "Armadillos' Waltz" in the DT?
I know that "Roadkill CafŽ" is.

There has to be a market for the definitive 'Field Guide to Flat British Wildlife'. Any potential authors out there?

Apparently, the selection pressure on hedgehogs exerted by cars (as opposed to foxes) is pushing their evolution away from rolling up into a ball and towards running fast. Are we producing a breeed of super-hedgehogs?

Song potential?

Biology meets folk.

Steve

A grade-school biology teacher ( think it was grade-school, not college) wrote a serious of books about critters; they were humorous as well as introductory to studying different life forms.

The one I remember was "Flattened Fauna" and its subject was North American roadkill.
I well recall the description of the Road Toad:
One forearm is extended as though waving goodbye.

That author must have been good at getting his students to pay attention in class.

I never touched anyfin' 'onest!

Anyway, just wanted to say - the thread reminded me of my favourite of Tone Deaf Leopard songs; Road Kill Café (or caf'e as it is sometimes written- would that be a barista's apostrophe?). And hoping that Trevor's recovery continues apace.
