Alcestermarje
Yes, it is the same Burcot.
Jeremy Taylor's tour dates say he's on in Bromsgrove.

Where is your Burcot? What is it, is it a folk club? is it every Saturday or what? We have a Burcot near to Redditch but I don't think it's the same one.

We've got Simon Barron and Rosalind Brady - from Devon, not long been gigging outside Devon, quite fey stuff, musical very interesting.

I think this thread may degenerate into the two of us organising a gig, which might not be so popular with everyone else, so, drop me an email - bryn@hollowhills.fsnet.co.uk and we can talk about Burcott and your single day event etc.

Breezy - Re Burcott - yeah, I should think we'd be up for mucking in with that next year, let me know your dates as early as you can and I will try to make sure I don't book anyone for that night - sadly this time round we have a clash, which can't be helped, these things tend to happen, there being not that many saturdays in a year when you get down to it.

Know what you mean about Dan's river song, its got that sort of a chorus.

Thinking about it, I'm not 100% certain about that number, so I found this:

Kitty, you high-jacker of songs ,His name is Gerry, and he's welsh, dont let the accent throw you, or your 'twiddly-bits' You must come over to St Albans sometime either a Fri or Sat if you're not too busy and join George and the rest of us.
Hecate, I may have been a bit harsh, you did talk, so we will reserve judgement, how about a promotion of some kind in Burcot at the village hall next year? Shame we didn't collaborate with the Jeremy Taylor at the end of November
Thank you Dan, cant stop humming 'River' Hope the flight was O.K. and thanks to el Greko and the lovely Mrs Greko xxx

Breezy

Thanks for the tip that Dan would be dropping in at Herga this evening. It was a very nice, relaxed session with good singing and an interesting selection of songs. I'd just like to clarify that "Intimate singers night" meant friendly rather than cliquey, and, apart from Dan coming along, it was especially nice that you brought a singer who was new to the club.

It's good to know that Dan will be back next year. Meanwhile, next week, we have Mike Nicholson at Herga....

Hello Hecate
Picked up Dan at Slough, George Papavgeris takes him to Heathrow in the morning and Dan finished with Mary-Ellen Carter at an excellent intimate singers night at the Herga, Harrow to end his tour.
Yes I do want him on his next visit, can you get me Barbara's no please.

Anyway, it was a very good gig. Dan McKinnon is an excellent performer, and he's got some very good new material - he's moved away from the sea somewhat and his new songs include tales about the Halifax explosion and the plight of Canadian farmers. There's some very thoughtful new material, which is on a new cd "Minstrel in the rain" - an excellent piece of work.

All being well, Dan will be back in the UK next Autumn, Barbara Portlock is agenting for him if anyone wants to book him (and you really should).

No one spoke to you? Curious, because I know I spoke to everyone in the room at least once during the course of the evening, and several of the other regulars were doing the rounds as well so that's a bit harsh.
Would agree that the venue is a sod to find, but it has the advantage of being really quiet, and most pubs you either get juke box noise, shouting at the footy or the like, so its not a bad trade off.

This is true. it's once you get off the ringroad that the real fun begins. They've been messing about with bus routes, one way systems, digging up bits of the road, shutting roads so they can new ones..... its mad I tell you!

As far as I know, the roads connecting the St John's ambulance building to the rest of Redditch are ok - from the train station (which is in the middle as near as makes much odds, is signposted and should appear on maps) go up the hill a few yards then turn left onto Hewel road. At the first roundabout you encounter, bear left under the railway bridge, there's another one of those magic mushroom style roundabouts, from which you want to go left again, then right onto Cedar road. This is residential. Follow the road round, take the second right - Cedar view. Look for a steep single lane on the right - we are up here, there are some car parking spaces. (Otherwise sue the roads.)If the gates are locked, wait around patiently for me to manifest bearing the keys! I am usually there by 8, but I have a small child so I might not always be perfectly on time.

Navigating Redditch is easy -- just follow the signs saying 'All other districts' until you see the one you want!

ah ha, thanks for letting me know when Dan is at banbury, unsurprisingly I had been a tad nervous about how the timing would work out. Anyway, to reitterate, he is an excellent signer, a really nice bloke and well worth coming along to see.
It an arse that so many people will be in Banbury instead of Redditch, but if any of you do get the urge, it would be great to see a few mudcatters.

Great singer. First came across Dan at the first Redditch folk festival and also when he has done guest appearances at Birmingham Trad. Folk club.

As already stated by George Seto a great authority on the Maritime Tradition.

Smashing bloke to boot!!

Saw Dan at Dursley. He is a nice guy as well. 'fraid I will be at Banbury

However if you can't remember the e-mail address- cresby.com has details. Not been to the new venue but Redditch navigation is best described as confusing, or most confusing, or "Mark Thatcher"

I agree. He is one of the best singers and songwriters around. PLUS he is quite knowledgeable about the Maritime Tradition and Folk Songs about the Maritime region.

He has gone through the Helen Creighton material at the Nova Scotia Archives many times, in particular looking for sea songs at the behest of the Helen Creighton Society. We're planning a special 2 CD set of Sea Songs which hopefully will be available next year (2003). It was thanks to Dan that we got a list complete with tape numbers and locations of the songs along with the names of the songs and singers.

This original source material is what will make up the tracks on the Sea Songs Project CD.

Dan McKinnon- excellent Song writer singer and all round performer.
In my opinion he has one of those incredibly BIG, rich sounding Canadian voices-. Without doubt one of the best Canadian Folksingers I have ever heard- if I was'nt working here in Hanoi, Vietnam I would be there to hear him.

He sings many of the late Stan Rogers songs- particularly well. Dan ending a session with the 'Mary Ellen Carter' wow!!!wow!! wow!!

If you hav'nt heard Dan before- even if you have go and see him. Then you can tell me what i've missed- on second thoughts don't tell me.
Go and see him if you can

Shameless plug time......

Saturday the 12th of October, Canadian singer Dan McKinnon will be at Redditch folk club.

The club has moved (again) and is now in the St John's ambulance station, Cedar View, Redditch. Doors will open at 8pm, BRING YOUR OWN BEER!

Obviously it would be really good if lots of people turn up. If you would like to be one of them, and feel the need for isntructions as to how best to make your way through the near legendary Redditch Traffic 'system', email bryn@hollowhills.fsnet.co.uk

I would post something on here, but as those who have tried to get into Redditch before will know, it does rather depend on where you are coming from.
