Leeds folk clubs?

Just about to move up to Leeds and wondered if there are any folk clubs in the city or places within reach by public transport? Also wondered if there is a listing that I can get hold of that will give information on events.

The Grove Folk Club in Holbeck is one of the oldest clubs in the area and meets on Friday evenings (also a session in a side room at the same time). It is an easy walk over the river from the central station.

All the music on in the area is advertised in Tykes News and also online through Filofolk at this site

As to ease of travel, it depends on which bit of Leeds you are in!

Leeds also has a large Irish population. In fact I always thought it STUPID that pub companies opened Fake Irish theme pubs in Leeds and Bradford when half of the landlords of real pubs in the two cities were already Irish. It is possible to find music of various types in the region. The Grove has official sessions on various nights including the folk stuff and also a Bluegrass session on the last Thursday of the month, but also unofficial music happens in some of the side rooms.
A pub called the White Hart (or Stag - I can never recall which) has Irish sessions at least once a week, possibly more. That one used to be frequented (probably still is) by some excellent musicians such as Tom Napper, one of the country's most accomplished Tenor Banjo players, and a really nice bloke.
The Irish Centre on Leeds Road has concerts including some of the top Irish folk bands.
Bradford, Huddersfield and York are also just a train ride away (different trains). Last train from Manchester via Bradford departs Manchester around 11pm and gets to Leeds around Midnight.
Once you find one place to go, use word of mouth to find out where the people there get to. Most of it will not be advertised in magazines.

Thank you so much. There's some really good information there, and always grateful to hear of anything else. It sounds like it's a great city for folk. I'm going to be in Armley not so far from the city centre so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to get to places. I'll definitely make it to the Grove. I love informal music and song sessions, so I'm looking forward to checking out the Irish sessions. I'll try and check out the Black Lion as well so hopefully see you at some point Greycap.

If you can venture south of the city try the Brewer's Pride in Ossett where there has been a singaround type club for over 20 years. Every Thursday night about 9pm but don't be late or you won't get a seat.

The pub is also a microbrewery, if you like real ale.

Ossett is between Wakefield and Dewsbury just by junction 40 of the M1 which makes it about 10 miles south of Leeds.

"Tykes News", sold in folk clubs etc. ( reasonably priced at £1-00) is a mainly West Yorkshire folk mag. It has a listings page with not only folk clubs but also sessions.   A good one of the latter is Sunday Lunchtime & afternoon At Dicky Mints, a.k.a. the Old Lane Inn, Old Lane, Halifax.
