I have a student who is working on a report. She would like to know when the song 'My Little Corner of the World' was wrote, originally recorded, and by whom if possible. Help is appreciated!

Well ... I'm not sure when it was recorded; probably in the early or mid '60's, but I'm pretty sure it was recorded by Anita Bryant. Hope I'm right ... hope this helps.

I wonder if the phrase "my little corner of the world" came from this song, or if it was the other way around. I couldn't find an online source for the lyrics, so I'll post them here, even though it ain't folk.

MY LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD
Words by Bob Hilliard, music by Lee Pockriss, copyrighted in 1960 - made popular by none other than Miss Anita Bryant
Oh, come along with me
To my little corner of the world
And dream a little dream
In my little corner of the world
You'll soon forget there's any other place
Tonight my love we'll share a sweet embrace
And if you'd care to stay
In my little corner of the world
Then we can hide away
In my little corner of the world
I always knew I'd find someone like you
So welcome to my little corner of the world.

Joe ... you are amazing! I was surprised to see the song even arise in a thread but have to admit I did like it when it was new. Hopefully, this won't bring the venerable Ms. Bryant out of retirement!.

Or Tom Paxton's:
YOu squeeze mine, Anita, I'll squeeze yours, Anita
You're the chosen, Anita,
Yours are frozen, Anita
Something something, laugh and play
Something something, you'll feel gay (note sung very low)

Trouble with writing topical songs, is sometimes the topic retires...

I was a wee bit worried my remark about Ms. Bryant would offend someone; glad to know ya'll are as offensive as I ...

One might argue that it was Ms. Bryant who was offensive, Jenny....

Joe O.

I can't locate the album or tape right now (both are completely our of alphabetical order). In the last two years, two ex-girlfriends have "lightened their lives" by selling many of their possessions. They had earlier lightened them by changing the level of our relationship. I bought both of their album collections. Then I moved and things have not been the same.

The song I referred to is a gay rights anthem, very dated. It goes back to the boycott of Tropicana Orange Juice by some in the gay community due to Anita's role as spokesperson. My memory fades, but somehow she insulted gays. The song implied Anita galvanized the community and gave it a focus for organizing.

Here are bits and pieces and perhaps some other politically incorrect person can fill in the rest.

Thank you Anita, you couldn't 'a' been sweeta,
The people who need you won't need you for long.
Now that we're on the loose, boycotting orange juice,
Long as you're on the loose, I'll sing this song.

I was the straight one, afraid of the gay one,
I thought they'd make me one if I lent them my hand.
etc.....

I was the gay one, afraid of the straight one. etc....

I am sorry this is such a temptation and incomplete, Joe. If I find the album or tape, I'll transcribe.

Joe ... You won't receive an "argument" from me about Ms. Bryant being offensive! When she made her remarks about gays, I was very young and not, yet, socially outspoken. I do, however, remember thinking "Hmmmmmmmmm, there's a word for that." Well, it's amazing what a little age does for one's social conscience, because now I know the word was "bigot."

I probably should not write this because in the genre of this forum I am probably 1 out of 100, or less. I don't know much about Ms Bryant because I did not listen to her music. She was probably a bit naive. But one should hold back on words like "bigot". My old daddy told me to watch where I put my penis. Whether you like it or not, and whatever your religion or lack thereof, the world runs on a very practical morality of "what you sow is what you reap". In the terms of my computer programming youth, "garbage in, garbage out". I wil look for response to this paragraph, but will not comment again. - Wayne H

Wayne ... reckon I will reply to that ... Anita Bryant was not naive ... I most definitely do not have a penis ... I am jewish and have a great deal of faith ... and a bigot by any other name is still a bigot.
