Does anyone know if there is a current recording of it? Thanks.

Could it be the bluegrass "Katy Daley", you didn't give much to go on.

Come on down the mountain Katy Daley
Come on donw the mountain Katy do
Come on down the mountain Katy Daley
I want taste your good ol mountain dew

If so I may have it around, if not I'm sure others have it, if that's the one, otherwise Cowpie might have it. Barry

No Name:

Here is Katy Daley. If you like the "high, lonesome sound", check out the site listed at the end of the lyrics.

Katy Daley

With her old man, she came from Tenparary
In the pioneer days of forty-two
Her old man was shot in Tombstone City
For the making of his good old mountain dew

Chorus
Oh, come on down the mountain, Katy Daley
Come on down the mountain, Katy do
Can't you hear us callin', Katy Daley
We want to drink your good old mountain dew

Wake up and pay attention, Katy Daley
I am the judge that's gonna sentence you
All the boys in court have drunk your whiskey
And, to tell the truth, I drank a little, too

So, to the jail, they took poor Katy Daley
Very soon the gates were open wide
The agents came for poor Katy Daley
They'll take her far across the Great Divide

In partial answer to your question above, I found:

Slightly different version, also a fourth verse that hasn't been mentioned.

First verse, & Chorus as previous posts.

The Judge says "pay attention, Katy Daley,
I'm sorry, that I have to sentence you,
For all the boys in court have drunk your whiskey
And, to tell the truth, dear Kate I've drunk it too.

Chorus

So off to jail they took poor Katy Daly,
But very soon the gates they opened wide:
An Angel came & took poor Katy Daly,
And brought her right across the great divide.

Chorus

Before the pearly gates there stood poor Katy,
St. Peter said "Good brewers they are few":
So step inside the gates dear Katy Daly,
And start to make your heavenly Mountain Dew"

I've always thought that to "Cross the great divide" meant to die.
If so, I think the aAngel makes more sense than the

the person who started this thread referred to this as Irish song. Indeed, I first heard this song as:
Come down from the mountains, Katy Daly
Come down from the mountains, Katy do
Come down from the mountains, Katy Daly
We want to taste your Irish mountain brew

Come on down, Katy do
Give us a sup of your Irish brew
We've been dry for a week or more
Give us a drop like you did before!

I suspect, however that in this case the Irish version derived from an American one. Anyone have any further information?

I have Katie Daly (must be the Irish spelling), by the Irish group, Brier Folkgroup. It's done as a medley with The Leaving of Liverpool, so is presumably missing some verses. I guess the reference to Tipperary has led to its adoption in Ireland.

Chorus
Come down the mountain, Katie Daly
Come down from the mountain, Katy, do
Can't you hear us callin', Katie Daly
We want to drink your good old mountain dew

Now your old man, Kitty, came from Tipperary
In the pioneering year of forty-two
Your old man he was shot in Tombstone City
For the making of his Irish mountain dew

Chorus

Wake up and pay attention, Katie Daly
I am the judge that's gonna sentence you
And all them boys in court have drunk your whiskey
And, to tell the truth, dear Kitty, I drunk some, too

Here's Brier's tune (verse first, then chorus)

Hopefully, this time with line-breaks!

Slightly different version, also a fourth verse that hasn't been mentioned.

First verse, & Chorus as previous posts.

The Judge says "pay attention, Katy Daley,
I'm sorry, that I have to sentence you,
For all the boys in court have drunk your whiskey,
And, to tell the truth, dear Kate I've drunk it too.

Chorus

So off to jail they took poor Katy Daly,

And brought her right across the great divide.

Chorus

Before the pearly gates there stood poor Katy,
St. Peter said "Good brewers they are few",
So step inside the gates dear Katy Daly,
And start to make your heavenly Mountain Dew"

I've always thought that to "Cross the great divide" meant to die. If so, I think the Angel makes more sense than the "agents"- unless of course making moonshine carried a death sentance!

Bit of trivia. Katy Daly was recorded by a Canadian folk group, The Halifax Three. Lead singer of that group was Dennis Doherty, better known for his later work with the Mamas and the Papas.

I've only heard American bands do this one, and the name of the place where her father came from never makes any sense to me.
However, if you sing ..came from Tipparary (Ireland)
In the pioneer days of 42 (the famine in Ireland)
Then combine that with the fact that Irish moonshinners predate American moonshinners, then it does make sense.

Written in 1962 by Paul (Moon) Mullins, born in Frenchburg, KY. A broadcaster, he was at one time a fiddler with Stanley Brothers and other groups. He received the 2007 Ohio Heritage Fellowship Award from the Ohio Arts Council.

Found on an Irish (of course!) site:

KATY DALEY

With her old man, Katy came from Tipperary,
In the pioneering year of forty-two,
Her old man he was shot in Johnstone City
For the making of his Irish mountain dew.

Come down the mountains, Katy Daley,
Come down the mountains, Katy do,
Oh can't y'hear us callin' Katy Daley,
We wanna drink y'Irish mountain dew.

Wake up an' pay attention, Katy Daley,
I am the judge that's goin' t' sentence you,
Now all the boys in court have drunk y' whiskey,
And t' tell the truth, dear Kate, I drunk it too.

And so to jail they took poor Katy Daley,
But very soon the gates were opened wide,
'Cause the angels came for poor old Katy Daley,
And took her far across that great divide.

Before the golden gates stood Katy Daley,
Saint Peter said, good brewers, they are few -
So step inside the golden gates, now Katy,
And start to brew your heavenly Mountain Dew.

By Dr Patrick C Power of Co Tipperary, Ireland. Words from Agnes Brett.

Chester Bluegrass Session wrote an additional second verse:

Katy came a-runnin' down the mountain
Swingin' in her hands a jug or two,
But the Sheriff and his boys they heard us callin'
And caught her with the good old mountain dew.

Katie Daly was written and sung by my uncle Eamonn O'Shea , real name Herman Weight. Although his name is German, it was deemed more appropriate to use an Irish name. The name Katie Daly was based on his wife's aunt in America at the time whose name was Kay Daly.

Eamon O' Shea or Herman Weight is my Grandfather. He has three children who are still alive, one who has an unpublished book from my Grandfather about his life and touring etc and all the original music that he wrote.

I remember Eamon O Shea putting on plays in an old school in Co Roscommon. And he singing Katy Daly and telling us every night that it was recorded and would be played on the radio later in the year. We knew all the words from hearing it every night for a week.....We were so excited when we heard it in the radio. Eamon was our superstar.. I remember there were three children. Teens at the time ..Philip ,Hermand and a beautiful daughter. That must be around 1960.      From Senior citizen with happy memories

Like Mick Moloney (see above), I too was fascinated by this thread and to hear from the next of kin of the song's composer.

Tom Dunphy & The Royal Showband's version, recorded in April 1962, is generally regareded as the first Irish showband release. As per the pre-Beatles pop craze of the time, this was given a skiffle-type treatment, a la Lonnie Donegan's the Battle of New Orleans, with a spoken intro.

While this was Herman's favourite recording and I enjoyed it immensely also, mine would have to be that done by the late Dermot O'Brien & His Clubmen, included on his self-titled album from 1964. What I particularly liked about it was the break-off, as an instrumental bridge, into the tune, The Rakes of Mallow, midway through the song. This recording was also issued as the b.side of Dermot's 1966 Irish no. 1 hit, The Merry Ploughboy; in fact the single could have passed as a double a-side.
