Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: Art Thieme Date: 01 Jun 98 - 11:21 PM For the last decade I've been the folksinger/tall tale teller on 2 boats on the Missiissippi River---The diesel boat, Twilight, and the steamboat, Julia Belle Swain.Cathy Barton and Dave Para have lately been singing & pickin' on the Delta Queen! John Hartford, a fine river pilot, shows up on MANY riverboats and often picks and sings when he takes a break from bein' the pilot! So---what do ya wanna know!! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: Cuilionn Date: 02 Jun 98 - 01:28 AM If it's the Seattle-based Ferryboat musicians, composed of Kat Eggleston and Steve Guthe, that you're wanting, they are no longer together and did not produce any songbook from which to work. But do not despair! Most of their material, with thte exception of self-penned songs, is traditional folk and should therefore be easy to find by looking up sources from their liner notes, i.e. Stan Rogers songbooks... As for contacting Steve Guthe and Kat Eggleston, I believe Steve is still in the Seattle area. You might be able to find a way to contact him through the Victory Musicians' Co-op (don't know if they have a web presence, but they're based in Bonney Lake...try directory assistence for current phone #? Failing that, perhaps you can check out the Seattle Folklore society webpage (check Mudcat links) and E-mail a query to them. Kat Eggleston has moved from Seattle to Chicago and is still researching the Childe Ballads which influenced some of her earlier compositions. You can probably contact her regarding lyrics/chords through the record company with which she currently works...I think it's Waterbug. Sorry I can't give you anything more direct, but perhaps these leads will help! Gabh spòrs, --Cuilionn |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: Art Thieme Date: 02 Jun 98 - 10:27 AM Was blind but now I see! Sorry! Kat is, indeed, in Chicago. Now is the wife of andrew Calhoun who runs waterbug Records. (That's where my next recording, a CD, will be!) Here's the Waterbug site: http://www.waterbug.com Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: Cuilionn Date: 03 Jun 98 - 02:27 AM Art, thanks for the Waterbug info...I shall keep an eye out for your CD! And glad Kat's still with Andrew, too. I tend to be reticent about noting "connections" when I haven't spoken to the involved parties lately. But I heard them sing a duet on a Seattle radio show a couple years back, and thought them quite well-matched, and not just musically! Since you're working with Waterbug yourself, I am tempted to appoint you my message-courier...but, partial as I am to genuine human contact, I suppose I ought to go peruse the website and thereby send a wee note to Kat. I want to find out what she's been doing lately with her research on the Childe Ballads! An beannachd leibh, --Cuilionn |

Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: open mike Date: 17 Jan 08 - 12:43 PM this comes up when i google Steve's name..from a 2005 post... The Month of June finds us a wee bit on the sad side as we recognize the passing of two musicians who supported our Celtic Scene here in Hawaii. First word was from Hank Cramer regarding Steve Guthe, "I'm sorry to pass along the news that Celtic musician Steve Guthe of Seattle died in April of a massive heart attack. He was 50 years of age. Steve played hammered dulcimer and banjo, and made several St. Patrick's Day trips to Honolulu over the years to play at Murphy's, O'Toole's, the Irish Rose, and Kelley O'Neil's. He had many friends and fans there in Hawaii. When we reach Fiddler's Green, I'm sure he'll be waiting there for us." Signed: Hank Cramer |

Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: GUEST,ferryboat fan Date: 18 Apr 08 - 11:00 AM When I was six, my family saw this couple while in Seattle and fell in love with their music. Of course, over the years we listened to the cassette tape so much that it wore out. Is there any way to get any recordings they made together? |

Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: ChanteyMatt Date: 18 Apr 08 - 03:01 PM Ahoy! A brand new CD of Steve Guthe has just been released. It's a collection of material recorded a few years ago. Contact the Northwest Seaport Click for more information |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: GUEST,Faith Date: 30 May 08 - 01:47 PM Good news! The Ferryboat Musicans "Overboard!" tape, and their first tape, have been reissued as CDs, and were put on sale over Memorial Day weekend. The sound's crisp, bright, and "Overboard!" has all but two songs, the missing ones written by Kat Guthe. By the way, it's my understanding that Steve died recently; this email will hook you up with the CDs, and you can ask for information about him there: SusanCastelazo@comcast.net |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: GUEST,Cliff Date: 11 Apr 11 - 05:56 PM Sad to hear the passing of Steve. I had the pleasure of meeting both Steve & Kat at a private Halloween get together some years back. As the party was a bit of a distance to drive & they not knowing the area, I escorted them to Redmond. From there they went on to Seattle. I asked if they had any recorded music & was given a cassette tape that they were selling. |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians From: Cuilionn Date: 12 Apr 11 - 11:36 AM Kat Eggleston's now living on Vashon Island, I believe, though she tours and maintains her connection to the Chicago folk scene with regular visits/gigs in that area. She's on Facebook and also has a few nice YouTube clips. If anyone's interested, here's her official website: Kat Eggleston --Cuilionn |
Subject: RE: Ferryboat Musicians - "Overboard" CD ?? From: GUEST,Julie Helm Date: 02 Jan 12 - 11:07 AM Does anyone know where I can get the "Overboard" CD now? I had hope when I saw this 2008 post, but, alas, the email bounced back. I absolutely love this recording, but no longer have a machine to play my original cassette on -- and I'm sure the poor tape is very worn.
