Subject: Anounce New Sessions Here
From: Pied Piper
Date: 11 Oct 02 - 07:33 AM

Hi Folks.
Further to my recent post about new sessions being listed in links, I've decided to create a thread where new sessions can be announced.
Please make shore that the information is accurate and thorough making clear the Country, County/State, Town, and address, the start time, day of the week/month, and give a brief description of the character of the event. If your feeling brave you could even give a contact phone number or E-mail.
Who knows maybe the management will spot it and think it's a good idea.
       All the best PP

PP, what you will want to do to keep this useful is add links to other threads where sessions have been announced, so it can be like an index-- there are at least two threads running now, about new sessions, that you could add.

You might want also to research the older threads to find more of them to link/index here.

This is going to sound a lot harder than it is, but--

At the bottom of the page when you post, below the text box where you type your post, there's a link that says "Make a link ("blue clicky")." You use that-- copy the URL of the thread you want to make into a link, then paste it into the linkmaker. Copy and paste the title of the thread into the LINK TEXT field, and then click CREATE LINK. It will make a link you can click to test if it's working properly, as well as give you material to use that actua;lly makes the link. If the link is working properly, you copy and paste the material indicated, into your post here.

There is also an HTML Practice Thread where you can practice this till it's working smoothly for you.

You will find that there are millions of reasons to know how to make links, and that it's pretty simple with just a little practice. If it isn't making sense, you probably only need to ask someone who knows computers to show you how to copy and paste.

Sounds like a good idea. I've been thinking of dividing the What's On thread into two parts - regular sessions and one-time performances.
Post sessions information in this thread, and we'll work it into an HTML-formatted list once we have a substantial amount of information.
I wouldn't worry about linking to other threads. If you find messages about sessions in other threads, copy-paste it here. Don't take stuff from the What's On thread - I'll sort it out when we make the list (actually, I'll probably try to talk Jeff into making the list).
Thanks.

Just a word of warning, to avoid any tears. This given the present licensing climate in England and Wales.

Could folk there please ensure before they post, that all concerned, especially the licensee and the local authority are happy for details of the session to be published.

This to avoid the session appearing in the following thread.

Killed by the PEL system Thanks

Beginning on 11 January, 2003, the Press Room, 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth NH, will be the venue for a monthly shanty and forebitter session. Singing will start at 3:30 (after the piano player is through) and continue till 7:30 or thereabouts. This will happen on the Second Saturday of each month.

Singers of such music are highly sought after as well as those who prefer to sing along or just sit and listen. Instruments are also welcome as long as they are not so big as to take up a seat space.

The Press Room, est. 1976, has a goodly selection of beers, wine and spirits as well as coffee, tea and soft potables. The kitchen will be open to accommodate the hungry with a modestly priced pub menu including vegetarian fare.

While smoking is allowed, there are two very large smoke eaters that suck up much of the fumage. Also, by consensus, no one smokes in the singers circle.

Reservations are not necessary, but it would be swell to know who's coming.
Post here, or if shy, PM me -- Tom

I just returned from Minneapolis-St.Paul recently, and while I was there I went to a nice folk session at Molly Quinn's. I don't have a lot of the information, but it was a Tuesday night. I'm sure there's someone here that might have more info.

I do know that there's a nice session on Wednesdays in Tempe, AZ (outside Phoenix) from 9 to midnightish...sometimes it's inside, depending on the weather.

The crowd is kinda young (average age is around 21, though they do let underagers in as well), and the music is mostly irish.

We have a session of Appalachian Old Time music which happens most fridays in the Royal, Cundy Street, Walkley, Sheffield from about 8.30 often till around midnight. We mostly play old fiddle tunes, with a couple of excellent fiddlers, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass. We occasionally sing some songs. Many of the tunes originally came from the UK and picked up an American accent, and swing beautifully.
The standard is quite high, but anyone is welcome to come and absorb an English version of this superb tradition, pick up the tunes and join in. There's always room for more players/singers.
We ring each other friday evening, because we all travel to get there.
If you fancy a go, PM me for my phone number, then you can ring me up between 6.30 and 8pm to make sure it's on.
Cheers
Ray

Update rather than new......The New Victory Folk Club was forced out of it's venue by a new landlord, but we now have a new name And a new venue....."Gloucester Folk Club at Chequers" will be gathering for the first time on Wednesday July 21st at Chequers Inn, Painswick Road, Gloucester. Kicking off with a guest night, we have "Touchwood" from Australia, though there will be time for local singers/musicians too!
There is plenty of car-parking space for those who need it.
Subsequent club dates will be on the 2nd Thursday of each month, and for the most part will be singers nights.
