Subject: BS The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Skipjack K8 Date: 11 Oct 02 - 09:30 AM I don't know what to do with myself for the next four hours and thirty seven minutes, until Debbie faces her dad with the eventual realisation that he is the father of Siobhan's baby-to-be! Just heard the re-run of last night's row between Simon and Debbie, when he cracks under her questioning his fidelity, to blurt out about Brian and Siobhan carrying on these past few months. Debbie slams the door and heads off to face Brian as the theme music cuts in. Note: This refers to the world's longest running soap opera, the Archers, on the wireless, BBC Radio 4. Just in case anyone is wondering. |

Don't read this or you will also fall under the evil spell, get out quickly. Has anyone noticed the undead in the Archers? Higgs for instance. As far as I can tell Higgs has never spoken a word, which is pretty good for a Radio programme (sorry that should have been Wireless). I think he works for Jack Woolley...... Higgs, bring the car round now. Pru Forrest died having failed to speak for years. Her strange existance became part of script writers jokes..... Tom Forst saying 'What's that Pru... you'l have to speak up....... and so on. Look, I'm not that bad, I didn't believe that stuff about dead Paul McCartney. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Mr Red Date: 13 Oct 02 - 05:55 AM the longest running soap opera? I dunno, tell us someone - in the US - is "the Days of Our Lives" still running? and how lonng has it been running? Truth to tell I had to switch off at that point because it did intrude. I only leave the radio on at 7:05 because I am too lazy and usually engrossed in the writing of some software or DTP doc. Right now it is Javascript in a PDF document (don't ask it is frustratingly engrossing) I listen to the radio if it catches my attention or ignore it as I happytap but this story line was infuriating me. I had to have an opinion (its just that I didn't care to). Good story writing I guess. |

I'm mildly obsessed by the archers Theame tune, I think it probly stems from being put to bed just B4 the Archers when I was little. "lumpty.. lumptty... lumpty.. lum meant "bed time" |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Oct 02 - 07:10 PM Guest from near Shepton Mallet The theme tune (Barwick Green, I think) may be addictive because it sounds as if it could be a Cotswold Morris tune, even though I know it was specially composed. The lumpty (as opposed to dum-ti-dum-ti-dum-ti-dum) sounds like a West Country variant. Debbie appears to be in denial. She keeps going on about how much she loves her husband Simon despite his mobile phone bill to Brenda Tucker(silly Debbie, she should have known after the original Simon Gerard debacle, not to mention the Simon Pemberton fiasco, that Simons in Ambridge are not to be trusted). Even while agonising over Simon G to her cousin Elizabeth, she has omitted to mention that Simon fingered Debbie's evil stepfather Brian as the father of Siobhan's baby (just for once, Simon was telling the truth, but as was pointed out earlier in this thread, he's such a rat that no-one will be inclined to believe him). Meanwhile, little Phoebe has both Debbie and Brenda as aunts and Kate Aldridge as her mother. There, that should cure you from listening for years and years and years.... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Skipjack K8 Date: 25 Oct 02 - 07:13 PM Bob, it's a radio soap that was started in the 50s on BBC to basically instruct farmers via a storyline. Now farming's got next to bugger all to do with it. Caesar said all you need is corn and circuses to keep the proletariat quiet. And this is all three, corn, corn and sex. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Michael Date: 26 Oct 02 - 07:12 PM My theory is that this cliffhanger has around 10 years to run yet. The story will be as follows Mary guesting in Mike's space. Baby born, Brian makes it to the hospital in nick of time etc Everyone thinks said baby, Male of course, looks like someone, but no one can quite decide who. Story rumbles on for a couple of years, Hungarian business going well and Siobhan doing lots of translating for Brian ( I've heard it called some things) Baby gets name put down for posh public school, no one can work out where the money comes from. Brian has money problems, will the little angel have to go to Borchester comp?? More years pass, Brian now geriatric and losing it, who will inherit the farm? He only has daughters doesn't he? Then comes the final denoument. In the mean time Simon has had an affair with Emma Carter's love child. Sad aren't I! But if Vanessa Whitburn is a Mudcatter and needs a new writer I'm available at a price. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Skipjack K8 Date: 26 Oct 02 - 07:31 PM Get serious, Michael! Do you expect her to embrace such a coherent storyline as that? Priceless |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: greg stephens Date: 12 Nov 02 - 09:22 AM The fact that the BBC now has trailers for what is going to happen tomorrow in the Archers suggests to me that we are no longer hearing what is actually going on in Amridge. I think some of cabal has taken over at Radio 4 and is using actors, writers, editors etc to create a progamme that PRETENDS to tell us what is going on. Internal evidence gleaned from the increasingly absurd story lines suggest to me that the leader of this group is probably a woman who has had a series of unsatisfactory liaions with mature men, and has now turned to the safer fun of owning a 16-year old central European toy-boy. There is some hope that a counter-coup may happen in the future, I believe that Eddie Grundy is still hanging in, the only real person left, His alleged "sons" are obviously actors, but I feel that Eddie may be the nucleus round which the real inhabitants may eventually rally and take over again. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Steve Parkes Date: 28 Jan 03 - 11:44 AM Well, I can remember Prue Forest being quite voluble, years before Dame Judi wangled the part. I can remember when Jean-Paul was a silent character, too. I think Tim Beecham shaould never have been allowed near a mic: it spoiled the pictures (in your head) completely. I wonder why it never occurred to Siobhan that Brian is a good Irish name? I think that worst possible thing that could happen with the Archers is that it gets transferred to tv. In the parallel universe on the other side of the mic, many the actors don't match their characters; and sever disruption to the space-time continuum as we know it would result. We should never meddle with the forces of Nature in this way. Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers - Cliffhanger! From: Steve Parkes Date: 29 Jan 03 - 03:26 AM Wood based his Barwick Green on a country dance tune; or maybe a sort of generic country dance tune, rather than a specific one: this would explain why it's unlike anything I've heard by a proper country dsance outfit. Although the Yetties recorded it, as we all know, and Silly Wizard played it at the Queen's Silver Jubilee Folk do at the Birmingham Civic Hall in 1975; not a lot of people know that. Steve |
