Subject: BS The Archers - Cliffhanger!
From: Skipjack K8
Date: 11 Oct 02 - 09:30 AM

I don't know what to do with myself for the next four hours and thirty seven minutes, until Debbie faces her dad with the eventual realisation that he is the father of Siobhan's baby-to-be! Just heard the re-run of last night's row between Simon and Debbie, when he cracks under her questioning his fidelity, to blurt out about Brian and Siobhan carrying on these past few months. Debbie slams the door and heads off to face Brian as the theme music cuts in.

Note: This refers to the world's longest running soap opera, the Archers, on the wireless, BBC Radio 4. Just in case anyone is wondering.

Has Tim and that woman vicar cleared off yet? He was the last person tempted to burst Brian when he found out about the rumpy-pumpy with his missus.

Interesting study in language -- I assume "telling tails" is an Anglo expression roughly parallel to our American expression "kick butt and take names"?

The Yetties made a record with Tom Forest, the Gamekeeper who died a few years ago. They also re-recorded the Sunday theme music and it is their recording that is still played for the Sunday Omnobus edition.

God, god what have I done? I have fallen into the evil web of Ambridge. Can I get help? Counciling, methadone, aromatherapy, look am willing to try that strange practice with the organic yoghurt that I think I I heard on that really interestng story of Country Folk called ..............agh. No, no I can't help myself now.

Don't read this or you will also fall under the evil spell, get out quickly.

Has anyone noticed the undead in the Archers? Higgs for instance. As far as I can tell Higgs has never spoken a word, which is pretty good for a Radio programme (sorry that should have been Wireless). I think he works for Jack Woolley...... Higgs, bring the car round now.

Pru Forrest died having failed to speak for years. Her strange existance became part of script writers jokes..... Tom Forst saying 'What's that Pru... you'l have to speak up....... and so on.

Look, I'm not that bad, I didn't believe that stuff about dead Paul McCartney.

Higgs got rat-arsed at Sid's stag party recently, when he was 'sposed to be wheel man. The Beeb didn't even stretch to 'noises off' vomitting. Peggoi had to come and pick Jeck up.

There is a superb volume by the Archers Anarchists (the sect that believes that Ambridge exists) that deals with the un-dead at length.

Anyone think Simon has given Brenda a portion yet?

The useful thing about the Archers is that you can hate, despise and loathe people and wish them dead withoout any feelings of guilt. After all they are only fictional. They are fictional, aren't they?

the longest running soap opera? I dunno, tell us someone - in the US - is "the Days of Our Lives" still running? and how lonng has it been running?

Truth to tell I had to switch off at that point because it did intrude. I only leave the radio on at 7:05 because I am too lazy and usually engrossed in the writing of some software or DTP doc. Right now it is Javascript in a PDF document (don't ask it is frustratingly engrossing)

I listen to the radio if it catches my attention or ignore it as I happytap but this story line was infuriating me. I had to have an opinion (its just that I didn't care to). Good story writing I guess.

Well, I'm still choked up about Grace Archer who died trying to save the horse Midnight in a fire in the stables; and then Dan, Doris, Walter, Tom, not to mention young John. Oh so sad! But of course its real, I've got a map.

Now then, Mr Aldridge, you can't keep your "bit on the side" quiet for much longer, it's bound to come out now and then what are you going to do? Buy her off? Of course, you've survived your indescretions before haven't you, Brian, but can you do it again, you two faced Smarmy *%#@£!!!

When is the baby due? I'm guessing that Brian & Siobhan won't get found out, at least until the baby arrives, and probably not even then. Seems somewhat incredible, but I guess the same secrets carry on undiscovered in real life for what seem amazingly long time (Edwina/John!). The longer the secret is kept, the easier it is to keep? Still, I'll be listening again tomorrow at 7:02pm - but I doubt much will happen!!!

P.S. Claim-to-fame: Jack Woolley (aka Arnold Peters) ran the youth club I went to.

Not the oldest soap opera, by more than a dozen years.

The American soap opera "The Guilding Light" started on radio in 1937. They're still at it on television. The Archers is a relative newcomer, since they've only been going since 1950.

btw.. what has happened??? I heard Fri or Sat night installment while washing up, but not since then!!??

I'm mildly obsessed by the archers Theame tune, I think it probly stems from being put to bed just B4 the Archers when I was little.
"lumpty.. lumptty... lumpty.. lum meant "bed time"

Guest from near Shepton Mallet
The theme tune (Barwick Green, I think) may be addictive because it sounds as if it could be a Cotswold Morris tune, even though I know it was specially composed. The lumpty (as opposed to dum-ti-dum-ti-dum-ti-dum) sounds like a West Country variant.

Debbie appears to be in denial. She keeps going on about how much she loves her husband Simon despite his mobile phone bill to Brenda Tucker(silly Debbie, she should have known after the original Simon Gerard debacle, not to mention the Simon Pemberton fiasco, that Simons in Ambridge are not to be trusted). Even while agonising over Simon G to her cousin Elizabeth, she has omitted to mention that Simon fingered Debbie's evil stepfather Brian as the father of Siobhan's baby (just for once, Simon was telling the truth, but as was pointed out earlier in this thread, he's such a rat that no-one will be inclined to believe him).

Meanwhile, little Phoebe has both Debbie and Brenda as aunts and Kate Aldridge as her mother.

There, that should cure you from listening for years and years and years....
