Anyone in Maidstone!! Does anyone know if the folk club still runs at the Old House at Home in pudding Lane on Mondays?
Rock Chick and I had an invite in 2001, thought we might take it up.
We thought we might take it up at last!

Three things. First, what's on now! Second what's happening next. Third what is club policy on joining in?

FIRST

We have had a bit of trouble with the local newspaper, the Kent Messenger. It cannot get the information it prints correct. I am setting out below my latest email to the editor of the appropriate section.



"Dear Mr Cole.

I refer to my recent email.

Upon further investigation I find that I had in fact told you of the change of bookings for Hazlitt Folk for October and November, by email of the 28th August the text of which is reproduced below.

"Dear Mr Cole

I refer to my email of the 21st.

The details for the 2nd September have not changed.

The 7th October is now to be a singers' night, admission £1.50.

The 4th November will now be a guest night with SLATTERY, who were very well received at Broadstairs this year. They comprise (1) Pete Hicks, the original Skinner's Rat (and also the 12-string player from Hell - just ask him to jazz), (2) Blossom a/k/a Commander Currie, currently a Skinner's Rat (Piano accordian genius who knows all the sharps and flats in every key and the man who drank the navy dry) and (3) Rick with the double bass (and judging by the fun he has getting it up the stairs at the Old House at Home, perhaps his mother really is in there). Admission is a mere £3, and this may be a rare chance (after the Broadstairs success) to see this band at this price in a real folk club.

SECOND


Jacqui and I moved from Higham to Lower Stoke last year and the trip to Maidstone became a burden. Don Thompson's "Jam" club and Bob Piggot's "the Long Drop" club had both lost their venues. Don was ex-our committee.

I proposed that a new committee be formed, with J+me representing Hazlitt Folk, Clive Lever (also on our committee but also involved with "Jam") representing Jam, and Bob Piggott representing the Long Drop. After the Slattery gig (above) J+I would resign from that new committee, Clive would assume representing Hazlitt, and Don would come on to represent Jam. Simultaneously the new committee would take over the goodwill of all 3 clubs and existing club funds of each(up to a maximum of £25) and the Hazlitt permission/arrangement to use the old House at Home premises.

All accepted.

Bob has just decided to unaccept, but that apart the plan will continue. So henceforth a unified Maidstone folk club (apart from John Barden's session on 3rd Fridays at the Hare and Hounds, and whatever Bob decides to do) will run at the House at Home first Mondays until Don and Clive alter that if they wish to.


POLICY

Also last year the committee after some pretty frank discussion and forceful representations from some good quality players and singers, decided to amend its "join in" policy. Policy is now "Join in if and only if invited". All types of music and performance are welcome. There is no PA and if you want a guitar amp or similar bring it with you and keep it turned down! Don and Clive may change this if they wish.
