Put bully in filter and set for 180 days. Five threads come up on this frequently asked question. 31335 is the longest. Bully
It pays to learn the method used by Sorcha plus this one. They may extract some 70 per centum of the information in Mudcat. Only serendipidy can find it all because of mis-spellings and misleading thread titles.

Right. Thread 31335, for which I gave a clickie, is on the Bully in the Alley (Sally....) song, with several versions including Hugill's, and comments. The other thread is the "Town" song.

So what's Shinbone Al then?

Tom Lewis reckons there's a town in Alabama with this name but I can't find it on the map. Pretty unlikely to put the postal address in a song anyway!

Any mudcatters live near there?

Steve

I thought Shinbone Alley was off the main pub'n club road in the docks of Kingston Jamaica. Reknowned as a place where sailors got robbed when drunk ashore.

"Shinbone Al" is one of those generic Sailortown streets which crops up all over the world, including Wiscasset, Maine. It was also a common phrase in Minstrel songs in the late 19th century.

More specifically, Shinbone Alley (like Sugar Hill and Tiger Bay) referred to the local Tenderloin district. Not restricted to sailors...."You ought to see my blue-eyed Sally
Lives way down in Shinbone Alley.."
                                     (Bill Monroe, "Dance All Night")

This has been gone over before. Shinbone Alleys in every port town. See 43912 Shinbone
They are mostly gone, unfortunate victims of gentrification.

I guess I was tired when I made the last post. The Wills song is "Dance All Night." I've sung the song before, just didn't remember the name. It's sort of the jazz version of "Cripple Creek." Who knows where Wills borrowed that line- "Lives way down on Shinbone Alley."

"Stay All Night" is a fiddle tune by Tommy Jarrell, Fred Cockerham.

The recording I have by Bob Wills is "Stay All Night". I'll look and see exactly what it is tomorrow, but it is the Counry Collection by the Smithsonian. From memory:

Stay all night, stay a little longer,
Dance all night, dance a little longer
Pull off your coat, throw it in the corner,
Don't see why you don't stay a little longer.

But yes, Shinbone Alley is in there.......

Lives way down on Shinbone Alley,
The number on the gate is the number on the door,
Next house over is the grocery store.

Something like that, anyway.

Sorcha-

Did Wills write "Stay All Night"? I just checked and I have a version of it collected by Lomax in 1944. It also has the "Shinbone Alley" lyrics.

Likely the phrase "Lives way down on Shinbone Alley" goes back to 19th century minstrel show singing but I can't find my citation now.

I've been singing this version for the past 17 years

Bully in the Alley

Chorus (after each verse):
So! Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Way-ay, hay-ay, bully in the alley
So! Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
    Bully down in Shinbone Al

Well, Sally is a girl from down our ally
Way-ay, ay-ay, bully in the alley
Well, Sally is the girl that I spliced nearly
    Bully down in Shinbone Al

For seven long years I courted little Sally
But all she did was dilly and dally

I left my Sally to go a sailin'
I left my Sal to go a-whalin'

I found myself down on the quay'o
Found my self with time so free'o

I walked up to the Jenny Lind'o
Kicked in the door and waltzed right in'o

I waltzed up to the bar and counter
And there I met with greasy Annie

Greasy Ann's a slimy whore'o
Every shellbacks knocked at her door o

We tossed and tumbled all night long'o
And in the morn the cock did crow'o

I left my Sal to go a sailin'
I left my Sal to go a whalin

Bully in the Alley was a short haul shanty which seldom needed more than 3-4 verses to get a task done.
Of course, people did add more just to have more to sing.
with some explanation.
