Our archivist tells me that there were around 30 musicians at the Saturday session, which was a lovely session with 7 hurdy gurdies and 4 bagpipes plus all sorts of other instruments (including a banjo, you old-timers will be glad to hear). No nyckleharpas though, maybe next time.

Looking forward to next year, and thanks to all who came!

Mal

I thought there were some excellent musicians there - including PP it must be said - and at least I know what Deger Electronic Pipes are now. I would have liked them to be louder though.

The Saturday lunchtime session was pretty well perfect to my way of thinking; the music never stopped for long and a good mixture of tunes from different traditions got played.
Thanks to the organizers and every one that took part. I had a great time.
All the best PP

Sarah, sorry you can't come tomorrow. Was looking forward to sharing a really miserable tune with you. Will keep you/everyone posted on how the day went and maybe future events. You can see some of us on www.forlornehope.co.uk

PP - Don't know about the bus services round here - our bus usually goes once a week on market day! You should be able to make it, but it might take some imaginative use of the schedules. There's a bus station in the centre of Crewe, and they should be able to help. If you want to look before you leap, the number is 01270 505855. Hope to see you.

Mr Happy, camping sorted. Dont know what, if any, facilities there are, but there's certainly space to camp! Ask John Hardy on arrival and he'll sort you out.

Have a nice day.

mal

I think the reason there's nothing on over Sunday lunchtime is that the pubs all do Sunday Lunch for their "normal" customers - we might frighten them away. We could always ask around on Saturday though.

Greg, a friend suggested that if you don't bring a hurdy gurdy or bagpipe, or at least something that drones, you might find a horse's head in the bottom of your bed!

When in doubt, RTFM - I read our blurb, which gives the latest info:-

Sat afternoon    The Shroppie Fly
Sat Evening      The Lord Combermere
Sunday Evening   The Bridge

Plus, the usual Monday evening session in the Lord Combermere.

Have enquired about camping - there's a field available, about a mile away, but probably no facilities! Speak to Il Capo on the day!

Hope to see you all. With this amount of interest it may well be "Audlem Annual International Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Day" next year, who knows?

Mal

Oops, sorry for the empty post - leaned on the mouse!

All musicians welcome - that includes you too, Greg!

Not seen a nyckelharp in the UK - it would be interesting to examine one at close quarters - can they sound happy? If not, we've found a really miserable tune for the HG which should suit us all.

Yes there are still sessions at High Offley, but I don't think regularly, especially in winter. Some musicians who are coming to the HG/BP day go fairly often, you could ask them.

Going away for a few days but will find out about Audlem camping when I get back. There's certainly a campsite in Nantwich, and the Shroppie Fly has a reasonable carpark, but don't know how they feel about overnight stops.

Are there still sessions at the Anchor at High Offley?

Nyckelharpa? I should think the gurdy players would be fascinated to see a comparatively rare distant relative of their instrument at close quarters.

I went to the bagpipe blowout (annual event at Milton Keynes) last year. It was huge fun and there were a few people there with other instruments. There were many hurdy gurdies, even though it was mainly a pipes event.

Do nyckelharpas count? We are a relative of the gurdy just a little bit more low tech (ie bow instead of wheel and play keys from underneath instead of over the top)?

Cheers

On Saturday 2nd November we're holding the 4th (or 5th?) annual Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Day in Audlem Cheshire. It will be held in the "Shroppie Fly" (one of Audlem's three pubs) from around noon onwards.

There'll be sessions on Sunday and Monday too, so with only a little stretch of the imagination you could call it a Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Weekend!

Good beer, good food, and bagpipes and hurdy gurdies - what more could a person want? It's not a huge event, more of a session really, but all are welcome.

If you're not keen on bagpipes and hurdy gurdies, well, you could argue that it tends to keep them in one place.

For info, contact Mal Denny on mal_denny@yahoo.co.uk
