One of the writer's of the song was my dad's cousin or my second cousin Eugene F Strasser. Unfortunately that is all I can add to this story. It brought back childhood memories and I would love to have the song downloaded on my phone. If anyone could direct me on how I can accomplish this it would be much appreciated. My record collecting pal knew the whole story about the catalog and filled me in. I think its hilarious and the flip side "Vinegar in My Wine" is even funnier. I have an mp3 turntable and just digitized the record so I can enjoy it on CD. Thanks for the thread, great to hear from Zoot's son !! |

One of Elvis Presley's drummers D. J. Fontana thought up the name "Zoot Fenter" for my dad to use. The song actually did quite well it was #1 in Florida for about 3 weeks. I believe in the same catalog there is another page advertising window curtains and someone had taken a pencil eraser and wrote the "F" word on the photo of curtains and it also got published, it was hard to see but it was there, I remember finding it myself. The other picture was probably done the same way, employee joke or mad employee, who knows. There were other novelty songs he did under the name "Zoot Fenster" as well. |

(Zoot Fenster) The story he tells of getting this single out is far funnier than the song itself. He related to me that he had received a middle of the night phone call from the Fischers in Kansas indicating that they urgently needed to get this cut before anyone else could. He was flown from Nashville to Kansas in a small craft, under storm conditions and thought he would not survive. In Kansas, they finalized the lyrics and music, and the record was cut within days. The record was selling quicker than they could press them until Sears threatened to pull advertising from anyone affiliated with playing the thing. Brought the party to a screaching halt. The 45 shows Publishing credits to: Georgene Music BMI. Flip side has "Zoot" singing "Vinegar in My Wine" by John Poznich. |

Hirsch store in Fredericktown Missouri 1975 and did have the catalogue with the picture but I think my ex-wife( notice EX) got rid of it. Just recently found the 45 stored in closet. The price tag reads regular price .39 cents sale price .11 cents. You won't buy 'em like that anymore! |

When if first played in Kansas, several local fire-n-brimstone preachers had whole sermons on how Sears was in league with the devil to corrupt our youth and lead us all into damnation. When Sears issued their contention that it was a "printing blemish," there was another round of sermons proclaiming that some evil person had purposely defaced the image to corrupt our youth and lead us all into damnation. When someone pointed out in a letter to the local newsrag that if you turned the page over and looked at the other side, it was quite clear what "showed through" and made the picture look like an obsecenity, there was another round of sermons about how Sears "dishonestly" tried to capitalize on this "accidental but innocent appearance" of obscenity by withholding the real explanation - to corrupt our youth and lead us all into poverty and damnation. The record only played for a couple of weeks, but they got sermons out of it for about three months, as I recall. Amos - A lot of people around here never left the 50s (or are just now getting to them). No need to "go back." Local folk still want their prohibition back. 20s? John |

It has been nearly 6 years since I posted this thread about the man on page 602. If you are easily offended, please do not go to this site. I found a site about it on the web http://www.chartrecords.net/man_on_page_602.htm It contains a real audio recording of the 1975 song by Zoot Fenster aka Jack Barlow. I have also been able to find the actual Sears catalog on ebay for only 99 cents. I don't think the censors would let this play on the air today but I think it was tastefully done. Apparently in a men's brief's underwear ad in their catalog, a model was revealing a little more than was expected, (but only part of one!) This prompted someone to write a song with the tag line "How I wish that I could be, that man on page 602". It was in the early 70's and it played on the country radio station so it wasn't too offensive. Can someone help me find this? I'm sure someone can! Sheepishly, gatyam gal |
