Sorry this is a bit late. It says in my Radio Times that Linda Thompson is on tonight's (Friday 18 Oct) BBC 2's, Later …..with Jools Holland.

Some bloke call Bowie is on too.

I say that the Radio Times says she is on, as in the preview/choice page, everyone else is mentioned there, except for our Linda!

The bbc website says she is on, Shambles. www.bbc.co.uk/later/ - It also has interviews with her and other information. "Folk diva Linda Thompson gives her first performance for 15 years with a number from her new album 'Fashionably Late.'

Given the scarcity of quality music on the UK media, I was astonished, as I was writing this, to hear a feature on Show of Hand's tour of the West Country on the local news just now.

I've known Linda ever since she was Linda Peters, and I, too, was disappointed. I regret to say that Miss Dynamite, who followed her, looked to be enjoying herself much more, and was more entertaining.

Then I thought, considering that at one time it was doubtful whether Linda would ever sing again, cut her a bit of slack, that was a heavy gig to make a first major come-back appearance on.

I'll certainly make the effort to catch her at a live gig, the smaller the venue the better.

I've got to agree...first gig for 15 years whatever...the choice of song was abysmal, the performance lack-lustre and on the whole did absolutely nothing to promote the folk music cause. There are a lot of people out there who could have coped a lot better...sorry Linda!

Have to agree -it was a wonderful lineup but it did her no favours -Bowie Ms Dynamite and The Coral were all wonderful.

I did feel for her, in the trying circumstances, but if that is the best song she has to offer given such an opportunity, it doesn't say much for the rest of her material, sorry.

Son Teddy seemed almost embarrassed backing her- it would have been better if she had just sung, and focussed more attention on Teddy's lovely guitar playing and harmonies. As it was presented it looked like her and a bunch of hangers-on. Great shame.

Agreed...

       Just a shame Linda picked one of the weaker songs on her fine new album,(Unfashionably Late)      Weary Life, Evona Darling or, especially, No Telling are all much stronger songs, plus I'm afraid her backing from the family+ did her few favours.

O.k. it was Mary You dont have to run
Its the 2nd best track on the album after No telling
Be fair , we all suppoted her and bought the album out of blind faith.
I am not that impressed with the content although No Telling is being covered .
Sounds a bit 'countryish' and 'Mary' is certainly that.
Folk it is definitly not, and jools is a fool anyway, but a good piano man.
Linda's kids were in shock, with no stage presence, she cant play a guitar to save her life, there were 2 guitars too many, the kid on the tambourine was an embarrssmnt, and an accordion filled out a bit.
No I wont be booking her for my club with that line-up, only with Teddy.If only.
Oh how images are altered.
Let us move on to the now and the future, so its Johnny Collins on Friday at the Comfort Hotel, St Albans

Promise I'm not being anti-reactionary, but I just watched Linda with the knowledge of her panning here, and I liked her performance. Three acoostik geetars was probably overkill, even if she didnae play hers, but the waves of harmony were soothing. I don't agree that it was weak, and I genuinely enjoyed the performance. I suspect that, for the right reasons, our previous posters wanted our Linda to champion our cause, and when she went it minimally, felt defeated. When Sharon Shannon played on Jools back a few years, that felt very one dimensional to me, and there is no bigger fan than I. I believe we want our champions to slay the field, and that's a tough order against Bowie. Doris Dynamite needs to keep trying. Against Linda, she's a musical pygmy. Good on yer, Linda!

What made me sad is that she was only given the opportunity to do one song while all the others did 2 or 3. It was the same when Martin Carthy appeared on the same show. It highlights the need for a good folk based programme on TV like Radio 2 have each week. I didn't dislike Linda's singing on the show but it was not upbeat enough to compete with the likes of Bowie and Ms Dynamite. Alot of people watching will never have heard of her anyway and I don't think they will be rushing out to buy the album based on that one hearing.

heard in background while programming Java in Acrobat pdf files. AND it didn't interrupt much either!

Will I be shot down if I say I saw Linda on Jool's prog and I wasn't very impressed at all? Actually I felt it was fairly average. I don't feel her performance did anything to encourage Jools Holland prog viewers to seek more folk.
