Last night my wife and I had dinner with an old friend. She's the daughter of a musician from a well known old time western band. She told us that last year when one of the other band members was dying in the hospital that one of his male children { I hesitate to use the word son } got into the mans house and took his musical instruments. Included was a Martin tenor guitar that had been a gift from Gene Autry when they had worked on a movie together and a 4 string banjo that Uncle Dave Macon had owned.

Doesn't this just piss you off ? On top of that the instruments were sold for pennies on the dollar to pawn shops just to pay for a bender. The jackass didn't even get top dollar. And he ripped off his own father.

Somebody tell me why we can't bringback horse whipping ? This is Texas after all. Thanks for letting me rant. I'll get off my soapbox now. The air is getting a little thin up here.

So did you go to the pawnshop and get these on the cheap to give them back to the old man and help secure them?

Out here in California we have ways of handling such a-holes. We load them up on Ecstasy and take them to the zoo.... :>)

They end up sleeping with the orangutangs, and you know what that does for the morning after.

This all happened last year and I just found out about it. The mans widow { the rip off's MOTHER } could have used the money tho. I wish I'd known about it at the time.

I used to work in a textbook store where a fair number of the customers were high school drop-outs who were enrolled in "adult education" classes. Almost every day, at least one kid would come in with a signed check from Mom and Dad and buy the books required for five or six classes and then bring three or four of them back for a refund the following day.   Whatta ya' think the chances are that they went home and gave the money back to Mom and Dad?

The whole concept of ripping off one's parents is so foreign to my way of thinking that I can't even conceive how anyone could bring themselves to do it. They must really hate their parents.

That is really sickening and inconceivable! Any chance the pawnshops still have them?

Naw, Wesley, I don't think we need to bring back horse whipping -- If this sleazebag is that desperate for a drink, he'll be dying a long, drawn-out, miserable death from liver failure . . . just remember, what goes around, comes around.

This is a good reason to remember too, that you can't take it with you, so make sweet memories for your loved ones while you still have a chance.

All the best, Áine

It's not just musicians, but this happens with every kind of asset. It's too late to do anything about that particular situation, but much of this can be legally prevented if we each have a will, designating who gets what. There's less ill-will, some of which can never be undone. If you have an elderly loved one, get all of the heirs together, and start talking about thia situation. If the elderly person is unable to make decisions, get appraisals on everything, and let people make their choices of assets. With appraisals, you at least have a reference point for valuation.

The instruments were stolen--they should have been reported stolen at the time, but can still be reported stolen--and they then can be tracked down and recovered--this can happen, even after a long period of time--

Still, this is a "Friend of a Friend" story, and the facts may be different, or even non-existent--Anybody want a recipe for Mrs. Field's Cookies?

Boy oh boy... Do I ever wish I could be half as self righteous...

Who is it is supposed to "Cast the first stone"?

No one here qualifies, I'm sure...

I agree with Clinton Hammond and GUEST--Amazing that you would be so eager run out andhorsewhip on such a tenuous story--

The old fart was dying.

He wasn't going to use the shit again.

Let the son drown the sorrow of his pain.

It wasn't you - or your's - so why are you crying?

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Has any one here heard of the Roman law of Paterfamilias? The head of the family retained the to discipline any member who disgraced the family, by death if he felt like it. The law was last used in Italy in the 1500's.

Run, do not walk, to your nearest locksmith & solicitor in that order! I have a will (for my few posessions), which is in the hands of the one person I trust the most (my oldest nephew) who is also the one person with a set of my keys. (comes in handy if the old A. R.--acient relic/aged relative--pick your take ever gets locked out of home or car!) I have made clear to all who gets my old 1964 Gibson, my piano, my sci-fi collection (what's left of it after I sell it off on ebay to pay for my meds in my future geezerdom) who gets this, who gets that. I will also make certain that specific instruments are given to my local traditional music organization--I'll have arthritis so badly by then, I may do that before I die!
Wesley, there are some things which are sacred, and I do believe that if you contact enough of us (send us the encoded message, & we'll use our secret decoder rings!) as to the rendezvous point & time, some might join you for a little covert action of recovery & payback! If anybody tries to turn us in, get hold of all the Texas Rangers who are 'Catters--for surely they are out there!--& if we are incarcerated, just make certain that your attorney gets us in front of a judge who is a 'Catter! Case closed!

Judging from his post in this thread, he is a major asshole, and enjoys being thought of as such. Al
