IF you have DSL or T1+

I would encourage you to take a look at an example from a friend... of young guitarist's talent with the BLUES and also the video of the classical transcription.

This kid kicks the licks.

You have a very talented son Alice, at what age did he begin?

I like the "Tobin's Favorite" solo, that high note must be a difficult fingering...its enriched my day.

THANX,

Sincerely,

Gargoyle

Ryan started lessons on classical violin in 5th grade and started playing Irish traditional music on the mandolin about 2 years ago, when he was 13. I told him he could play a St. Patrick's gig with me and get paid if he learned the tunes, so in a few days he went through the gig list and learned it. He is hooked on playing Irish trad on the mandolin. He plays only classical on the violin. Has a good singing voice but is too shy to use it.

What a wonderful place to be a kid.

Go to the main webpage and then "Other Information" and "Archive."

This looks like a school for the performing arts but it is an international school that is into solid academics and a combined fee of 15,000 euros a year. Does it take brains to be an artist? My guess, is yes.

The kid lives in the Netherlands, he is more likely to go punching things in Hull.

There are also good things coming out of Canada. Listen to the middle showcased selection by the young artist Tayo.

Gargoyle

I see that Tayo is from Alberta... my favorite group of young talent from Alberta is BARRAGE! They are phenomenal. I saw them in their first Public Television performance... a group of young violin students forming an incredible dancing, singing, and playing band that has such incredible versatility and high energy... amazing. The director is now auditioning in other parts of the world to put young players together in more Barrage troupes. You have to see them interplay with each other, moving, dancing, interacting with the violins to get the real impact... but here are some sound files. http://www.barrage.org/sounds.htm

A bit of detail about Lynae Oliver in the cast of Barrage:

Lynae Oliver

Instruments: Fiddle, Mandolin, Piano

Born: October 31 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Background

My mom was buying strings for my dad's banjo at the local music store and mentioned to the owner, as I was dancing around, "It's too bad there isn't some kind of a music program for children." The owner then proceeded to tell my mother that, in fact, a lady had just moved into town named Carolyn Hatch, and that she would be starting to teach Suzuki Method violin! So my mom decided she would put my older brother in first, as there was no program for a three-year-old yet. It about killed me that Jake, my older brother, got to play first. Recognizing that I wanted to play so badly, Carolyn made a "Violin" for me out of a cake box and a ruler with a wooden dowel for the "Bow." I played with my brother at all of his lessons and concerts, until the day finally came when there was a real Violin for me at age three-and-a-half. I obviously started playing Classical Music when I was three-and-a-half, and I started taking contest fiddle lessons from Tony Ludiker at age six. I began competing when I was six. I went on to be the Idaho State Champion in the Small Fry and Jr. divisions. These are just a few of the awards I can remember, as well as I came in second at State for Classical Violin in my junior year of high school. Backtracking a little bit, I quit contesting when I was 12, as I didn't feel I had enough time to devote to it anymore, plus it was just becoming really competitive, and it took all the fun out of it. I had other things vying for my attention, among them was a fiddle country band called "The Young Time Fiddlers," with my brother and a close family friend. Then it became just my brother and I, and we called ourselves "The Olivers." Between the ages of 13-16, we moved to Tennessee to play in a theatre with Ava Barber and Dick Dale as featured acts. The other thing I had to make time for was school. Not only was I working a full work week, but I was going to school and maintaining a 3.5 G.P.A.. I was accepted into Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., however I put this on hold to join Barrage.
