What do people think of such shows are they good for the music industry, or do they hold those with real talent back. Also is it not detrimental to musicains of all gengre when pop is pushed so hard.

The likes of "Hear say" are near forgotten, would they have had a better future if the gained recognition the hard way?

It would be interesting to see how all gengres compete with each other like folk,country,Blues rather than Will and Hearsay pushed all the time.

I saw a girl on TV last night singing a folk song, I cannot remember the name and thought that it was far superior than the everts we are exposed to on popstars etc.

I'm no prude but I do get annoyed when my daughter tries to emulate the crude dancing associated with some pop songs. I think an alternative should be offered, which does not involve crutch grabbing.

Why do they call them 'bands'when all they are is dancing singers?

Sometimes - try to listen to the Auditions for the play offs - before the uglier ( and yes I mean that ) ones get voted out.

Some of those kids have real and I mean serious real talent in their voices.

Then the voting knocks out those not fitting the 'pop-idol look' !

Could you imagine Mary Coughlin or Van Morrisson in the running.....
At least there is / was the hard road.

A lot of people I know criticise the fact they (popstars)don't sing anything original - and lets face it - in folk music, who are we to comment.

But in the end the shows are for 'Pop' not genres.

Ireland - I'm very glad you brought up this issue of crutch grabbing among popstars. It is a very dangerous practice. Grabbing someone's crutch could easily make the crutch user fall down, resulting in further injury. Maybe some popstars think it's funny, but I think it's cruel and juvenile.

Oh..... I'll bet you meant crotch grabbing.

I rarely watch these programmes but on the few occassions I have, I'm usually impressed by one or two of the kids on show.
I just think it's a pity that they're being used in this way, to make money for the programmers, and, if successful, catapulted into the public eye, overnight, without any real preparation.
It will undoubtably prove to be the kiss of death for the winners, as they will forever trying to prove/justify themselves to gain real credibility in the business.
I don't blame the youngsters. When you consider how thin the chances of a successful carreer are, in the music business, it's no wonder they're queuing round the block to audition, but most teenagers won't see the bigger picture and, even if they do, would probably take 15 minutes of fame over years of working small clubs trying to work their way up.
If I was 18 again, good-looking, could sing and dance..........
Now we're into the realms of fantasy!!

Personally, I find these sort of shows to be dumbed down, bland and repetitive. On the other hand it does give us higher beings something to look down on. There's plenty good stuff to go round.
