It may or may not be true that the artists on this particular set (or their estates) will not reveive any money from it. But if, as I believe was true in this case, the people who collected and released this material have done so with the intent of making the recordings accessible to people who would not otherwise hear it. And by encouraging (or allowing)people to make copies, you are discouraging them from taking the time and spending the money to do more reissues like this in the future.

I currently have it checked out from the library -- for something probably not something I'd like to own, certainly not at $45, but very interesting reading and fun listening, the library's the cheap way to go! And if there's something you like, you can burn it yourself. Without the 69 pages of text, I'd say it's not worth much.

Yes, I AM frugal, BUT- I would do nothing illegal, especially I would never be nonsupportive of any musician. As you say, most of these anthologies pass nothing to the artists. And, I AM NOT CHEAP!

Saul Goldie:

And how many of the musicians on these compilations do you think would get a penny of the money? Round it off to zero. Do you Think Maybelle Carter, or Clarence Ashley, or even Doc Watson would get anything? I doubt it. I don't think that I'd be eliminating the possiblity of a sale to Ballpienhammer, because we all know how carefull he is with his money.... :-)

Burning a CD for a friend... even if you don't know them isn't really any different than making a cassette of an album. For all the people who have recorded songs of mine, more than half have never paid royalties... and I take no real offense at that. It's always a pleasant surprise when someone does, and I appreciate it. But, if a Catter wants to hear my music, I end up copying one of my albums and sending it to them. Maybe I'd better report me to me.

Seriously, though... There is a difference between burning a CD of an album by an individual artist, and one that's a collection of songs by a whole slug of artists, many of who are dead. And the live ones are not likely to ever see a penny.

In this case the question is moot, as I don't have the collection. But if I did, I would be happy to burn a copy for my friend ballpienhammer. I just wouldn't make a hundred copies, reproduce the cover on a cheesy copying machine and sell them for 1/2 price on Jamaica Avenue, in Queens (N.y., U.S. of A., also known as America.

Good question, though... (I'd burn one for you too, and then you'd have a moral dilemma whether you'd accept it...

:-)Just funnin'

Jerry

Jerry,
Isn't that maybe unfair to the artists who don't make money off of copies? Or is it OK if one wouldn't have bought a copy anyway so they are not actually deprived of the non-profit of a non-sale? OTOH, maybe the copy would lead to future sales that would not have happened without the initial exposure?

BTW, I have been meaning to say "Thanks" for your song "A Handful of Song" which I have been enjoying very much on a Matt Latrobe album.

If you're interested in a good collection from this time period (mostly) at a third of the price, there is a 3CD set on Vanguard that looks good. The three discs are organized into Singers & Songwriters, Roots Of Folk and Folk Blues. It has songs by Elizabeth Cotton, The Rooftop Singers, Maybelle Careter, Judy Colins, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, Ian and Sylvia, Reverend Gary Davis, Phil Ochs, Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson and Clarence Ashley, among others.
The cost? $17.85 through www.salesbooks.com.

Having been there, and having seen the list of songs on a similar collection,McDougal and Bleeker Street, it's not something that I would buy. The music and the "scene" was very exciting at the time, but a lot of the music hasn't worn well for me. Nostalgia has it's limitations... I don't know what the tracks are on this one, though, so I don't want to minimize it. If I had it, I'd be happy to burn you a copy, though.

Jerry

Anyone think this is worth the $45? OR, anyone want to burn me a copy?
