From: GutBucketeer Date: 21 Oct 02 - 09:26 AM Well, I made it up for Saturday, and ended up not leaving until Noon on Sunday (somehow there just happened to be a sleeping bag in the trunk of my car, I wonder how it got there) ;-). It again was a memorable experience, only limited by missing those that couldn't make it (David C, MMario, Max, Jed, Pene, the Pattons... we missed you all). Carol C and Jack the Sailor truly looked very happy together. It was great meeting the new folks too: Willie-O, Homeless, Morticia, and others. I'll let those that were there the whole time describe all the fantasic music, good jammin', and how cold it was. Though the Missing Person Gospel Quartet was simply indescribable, and they are the nicest people that I think you could ever meet. I also got to play my gutbucket with people again: at the contra-dance session, and jammin' Saturday night. Wow! It always gives me a thrill to play with others that are so fantastic, and find that they are so open to others joining in! We only stayed up until 4 am Saturday night. This was my third year, and as time goes on it seems that the music becomes almost secondary. Though we see each other in the flesh only briefly each year the real highlight is connecting with friends from before. The bonds and camaraderie that develop over these three brief days each year are what the Getaway is all about. Still in a daze. JAB |

We look forward to it every year, all year, and just have the greatest time. NEXT year, we're going to leave Sunday night, instead of Sunday morning, so we can do all the Sunday stuff, instead of packing up the tent and driving home. The food this year (at least while we were there) was the best yet. (though a number of us still miss doing kitchen duty with Debbie McClatchey and eating her excellent cooking!) THE Highlight for me was learning all those cool chord inversions from Rick Fielding. Insofar as I was sitting in the front of a theater barn, with a mess of people watching, and Rick telling me that I was going to be backing him up on stage at a major performance (and me with stage fright the size of a house!) you could call it a private lesson. What was really nifty about it was that in the TV room after supper I was able to play those inversions on a number of songs! Goes to show that THIS middle-aged dog can still learn new tricks! I don't know what was Reynaud's high point, but he bought a new banjo from Gutbucketeer and played it at the concert. He also filled in at the contra dance while I was off with Lisa Null doing vocal things. Together, I best liked the jam session Saturday night after the concert. It was in one of the cabins, and we just kept going around the circle. Gutbucketeer was on the washtub, which sounded great! Tim and Glen did a surfer duet with Glen using a cot frame for a hand drum. Unfortunately, we left around 2 am, long before it broke up, anticipating an early morning tearing down the tent and driving back to CT. As for the weather, I think the weekend at Prince William was colder and much much much wetter. This was actually not bad!!! But there are just too many great memories to recount here. We'll be looking forward to doing it again next year! V |

I've got about six and a half hours of video this year and once I get it back on CD Rom (2-3 weeks) those of you who missed it will have a chance to share a moment or two. ( NOTE: not professional taping, just fun footage). Max did make it up Friday night, but disappeared on Saturday somethng about work....??? We missed him...It's an amazing group. Seamus Kennedy popped in at about 1 am last night and stayed for a couple of songs it was a wonderful treat. I see these folks once a year for the past three years, but it truely is a homecoming experience. Each year the greetings are tighter and warmer...the experience just keeps building. But a clear highlight was Judy Cook singing the pig song to Big Mick... and perhaps Moticia in tears as she heard Rubber Ducky...Love Ya all.. Kathy |

I would be remiss if I didn't point out a few items and statements of fact: Morticia is much cuter that Micca. Rick Fielding tends to underdress for these occasions. You can't play "Truck Driving Man" on the D-41 (a very nice guitar by the way) at 200 beats per minute when your fingers are freezing to the frets. Brother Fielding and I had a mutual guitar appreciation weekend for our new babies, his D-41 and my Gallagher. (Better than this, oh pickers, it doesn't much get.) The weather was chilly and dank, but the spirits (notably Jack Daniels) remained high. Jennifer made us multicolored buttons even though we were "DAY PEOPLE", and for this S and I were most grateful. Our "Old Time Country Music" workshop was lots of fun. Thanks to Charlie, who's always smiling and Rita and Nancy for making happen. I'll never forget the look on Kendall's face as he tried to figure out what chord Rick might choose next as we joined him for "Do Re Mi" at the end of Rick's mini-concert. Endless thanks are due to all who attended and especially to those who made the song circles so fabulous. It was such a pleasure to meet Morticia. Her sense of humor and great store of lovely songs (beautifully sung, I should add!) made the weekend even more special. A special thanks to Janie who made my dreams come true. (Don't get ahead of me, folks!) I had written a song for which I had always envisioned an audience participation. Thanks to Janie, it actually happened this weekend. Wow! |

Absolutely wonderful, fabulous, etc. etc. Great music. Great fellowship. Great workshops, and too many of them to get to all I wanted. Sunday night we had a HUGE jam and sing-a-round in the cabin. I think everyone who stayed Sunday night was there, leading to an incredibly rich mix of different songs, styles and voices (not to mention that all those bodies created a little island of real warmth in that heatless place. I went to sleep to the sound of a parlour harp--thought I had died and gone to heaven! I'll let someone else say more. Janie |

I just got back from dinner with Big Mick, KarenK, KathWestra, Ferrara, Knithpick, SongsterBob, Lorraine, George Stephens (LaMarca's other half) and Lisa Null (my other half)--the Getaway continues, at least in our neighborhood. Thanks to everybody who came for coming and sharing your music. My impressions of the Getaway will wait until after I recover. MMario--sorry the cell phones didn't work; we've now discovered that much of the camp sits low enough in the Susquehanna Valley that cell phones don't get a signal there. Some folks had cell phones that sorked if you went up to the top of the hill (by the white house). But if this happens again, you should just grab WYSIWYG and bring her down to the Getaway. We can always cram in a couple of last minute folks. And she had to go to Harrisburg, too--that's only about an hour from the Getaway! --Charlie Baum |

Hope it moves on to others quickly and the car god smiles on all mudcatters in the future. ;-) I just wish that for once people would say that Sunday night was nice and quiet and everyone went to bed early (except next year when I WILL stay the whole time. Charlie, Rita, put me to work so I have an excuse to stay the whole time. I'm officially volunteering right now). Darn and Double Darn its hard to believe that it got better than Saturday night, but I'm sure it did. Vicki mentioned above that Tim bought my very first banjo. It was just gathering dust and I'm glad it will be heard again. It's just an old Kay openback but it sure sounds good when Tim plays it. Everyone also needs to know that Annie, Jannie, and Dani also sure do nice harmony together. They sang an original Sea Shanty at Saturday night's concert that sounded much prettier than any Shanty sung out on deck. It was awesome. Annie please post the lyrics! Also, can the waltz and contra-dance be a given next year? I don't know if the dancers had a good time, but it sure was fun playing. ta ta for now JAB |

Luckily, the symptoms only started Sun and my voice STILL works despite the fact I sang all the way home. It was great to meet new folks and hear them sing. The jam on Sun in the cabin was ...well, that cabin was FULL. Was great, but I was one of the living dead and went to bed early. In another cabin. I missed Seamus and probably a load of good music. I had a lot of fun in Rick's Jamming & Accompaniment workshop, but I learn a pile of stuff in Bob Clayton and Rick's Blues Guitar workshop. It opened some doors for me, if that makes any sense. MMario, we really missed you. I have something of yours, and I'll PM you to explain when I'm conscious. Great Getaway!!! |

What a joy to see that smile, and to hear him sing. I Actually Met Morticia! -- This is something I have longed for ever since I first read one of her Mudcat posts. As I remember, I laughed my head off, then thought something along the lines of, "This woman has a twisted mind and a wicked sense of humor -- I would LOVE to meet her!" She does, and she certainly fit right in.... Memories, bits and pieces.... ....Mick playing "Yellow on the Broom" Friday night and me getting the song stuck in my head ....Kendall lending me his 12-string before breakfast Saturday morning to practice "Yellow on the Broom" so I could sing it in the Meet'n'Greet ....Being warm enough occasionally ....Standing under the pines with the CarolC & JackTheSailor, singing Rose of Allandale which is a song about love, marriage, mutual support and loyalty and so seemed just about right ....Hugging Mick ....Getting to meet Heather Fielding at last ....Hearing the incredible harmonies of the Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet, all three of 'em ....Hearing Ken Schatz, Mary LaMarca and George Stephens sing Kipling in the parlor of the White House; it was GREAT (who knew the WH had such fantastic acoustics?) ....Realizing that the Pub Sing, led by my son Shadowmonk and Lorraine's son Allan, was turning into a resounding success (so to speak), so much fun that we all sang for an extra half hour and were late to dinner ....Hearing Jeri's songs ....Hugging Mick Proud moms abounded this year; both Ken and Dan Schatz were there, doing mini concerts and leading workshops, a real family Getaway for Nancy King. There were plenty of FSGW folks joining in the Saturday late night singing at the Mudcat cabin, and Mudcatters wandering up to the TV Room for the Sunday ditto. That was nice. Bill informed me that Janice Cole threw two more people including Morticia into hysterics with her torch rendition of "Rubber Ducky." (Was it only last year that Barry Finn literally fell off his seat when he heard it?) Because of the car troubles etc, I arrived at the Getaway just about wore out and never really recovered, so missed all the fantastic late night singing. Heard about it plenty, though. Tinker, I'm so glad you made that recording. As usual I'm frustrated because I work for months to set up all those workshops and can never figure out how to get to four workshops in every hour.... From what I'm hearing though, many of the workshops reached a really high level of great music and great fun this year. Thanks and congratulations to all of you who practiced and planned and did a great job leading and joining in, then stayed up half the night for more of the same. Rita |

From: Willie-O Date: 22 Oct 02 - 04:53 AM Wey-ell, y'all...kicks self, I'm back in the Ottawa Valley and must revert to proper second person plural (informal) which of course is "youse" and that, eh. I just got home half an hour ago, 4 a.m. Had a nice smooth trip (for which I almost feel guilty) and was far enough ahead of schedule that I got a motel room in Kingston and got a few hours sleep before my train-station rendezvous with Emily / Agent Teacup, so we had fun the rest of the way home comparing our weekends (she was at the big bluegrass fest in Louisville, and a lot of people including Hazel Dickens signed her pants, commenting that everyone does autograph collections this way in Japan). We are looking forward to getting the lyrics to some new-to-us morbid train songs like "Please Mr Conductor (don't put me off the train)" and "His Mother Is Dead In the Baggage Coach Ahead" so we can work them into our act... Oh, I really had a great time at the Getaway, seeing old, middling and brand new friends, putting faces to many long-time Catters--even Max, and Joe, and hi there Mick, Rick, Jeri, Heather, Carol & Rob, Annie, Janie, Kendall, Morticia!!! (you slay me, by the way), Mary, Bill D, Ferrara--thanks for all the hard work of making it happen, Tinker, Gutbucketeer and all the rest, I knew I shouldn't have started a list. It was a lot of fun having a noticeable Canadian contingent (regiment)?, Edmund and Charmion are taking the long way home so will no doubt check in later. But me, I gotta go get some sleep now. I didn't get a lot since I left home on Friday. I stopped this afternoon long enough to walk a couple of miles on the Appalachian Trail. That was a nice break. Love to all Willie-O |

Mr. Mantid and I loved trying our different styles in the TV room till wee hours on Saturday and the gym for both the workshops and many of the song circles. I'm so glad to hear that the musicians had just as much fun as we did and look forward to next year. |

She is so great and funny. Wasting an hour with kendall was warming on a cold day. Everything was wonderful. Jeez Charlie, those ones with the fancy belt (one of the first things I ever carved) COULD be mine. Now how does one walk off without yer pants? Very carefully. Yeah, it was very chilly, but well worth the 12 1/2 hour drives each way. Great company, great songs, and our musical extended family grows once again. Had my first taste of CORN LIKKER, and it was awfulllll! From the looks on the faces of the other three people sharing from the little jug, I can assume that t'was I that was outta step! Considering my favourite 'Getaway' beverage was the purple 'Jim Jones' juice, I guess 'drinkin' just ain't my thing. I was really sorry not to see Pene there, and Mario, I've left your carved strap from the auction with Jeri. She'll mail it to you (saves customs people from opening the package). Sorry you had to leave early Max, and sorry I wasn't there when Seamus Kennedy dropped in. Some brief thoughts. Played some great instruments....Dick's and Kendall's Appolonios, Fortunato's Gallagher, Charmion's Cox, and Jeri's newly set up 00-17. Three days of frozen fingers!! Yoiks I AM getting old! The most all-encompassing emotion came from talking to my friends who've also gone through some tough life threatening health issues. S'good to be alive and pickin' eh? The rest of the Canadian regiment is now back on home station, much to the loud delight of the resident cats. Great weekend, truly a getaway. Learned plenty of new stuff, bought more CDs than we really should have with our lightweight money; fortunately, didn't have to explain our spending habits to the Canada Customs guy who was already mad enough at Charmion for driving through the booth without stopping. You really don't ever want to hear the siren they set off when you do that. (The light was green and no one was home, so what was one to think? If it wasn't Free Day For Folkies, it should have been!) It's such a pleasure to have faces and voices to go with all those Mudcat handles, and a more expanded musical universe. It was so hard to leave. More later, when we have had lunch and more time to digest the experience. |

From: Bill D Date: 22 Oct 02 - 01:15 PM I just got my first idea for one of next years workshops!...Something like "Barnyard Animals"....we know LOTS of pig songs...and cow songs...and mule songs....and duck songs..(a local group did almost an hour of duck songs a few years ago with no planning!) It just might have to be scheduled right before lunch...*grin* anyway, I am 'almost' human again after sleeping 11 hours, and am musing on what joys of the weekend to report first. One of the highlights for me is always the singing of Barry Finn. He does wondrous things to songs! And this year, he took a nice little sea song many of us know, "Bye-Bye,My Roseanna", and sent chills up my spine! Wow!...that song IS more than just a neat 'goodbye' song, I just never noticed till Barry's voice and passion opened it up for me. (You know, the highest compliment I can pay a singer is to say that they make the song the focus...not the singer, and several people did that for me this weekend. I knew it was Barry singing, but I was not hearing it as "Barry"....well, most of you know what I mean). Morticia did that with a lovely/funny song about a poor suitor on a ladder...sure, it was Morticia singing, but it was the story that shone, and I appreciate Morty the more for it..(and as I told her, I didn't hear it as a 'dialect' song...was perfectly clear!) You know...that Sunday night sardine-sing in the cabin has been mentioned before, but the amazing thing was how people constantly adapted, moved, made room, took turns, paid attention to who needed seats etc....and STILL kept the fun & music going! Tinker ran her camera(and others ran it FOR her when necessary), giant harp arrived and was accomodated, a blind woman arrived and was found a place (our own Gail, who sang the very appropriate "You Can't Keep Me from Singing"), local folk and Mudcatters all mixed in with amazing results! We had crafts for sale,mushrooms for sale, the silent auction, CD's from Camsco and others for sale, instruments and cases for sale, displays of crafts like Rick's leatherwork that can be ordered....what have I missed? Camp Gee...enuf fer now!...(you can see I am more awake today *grin*)...let's see what the late-arrivers-home have to say...it may remind me of more that needs saying....suffice it to say, we sorta mostly had fun... |

One memorable moment was when, on the way to Judy's "American Traditional" workshop, I encountered Rick and Kendall with guitars, and Carly and Jeri as added vocals, just outside the kitchen door. I hauled out my new old banjo (1925 Gibson Style 0, thanks for asking) and managed to get into "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" well-enough. Then Rick started "Paul and Silas (All Night Long)" and we nailed that harmony to the tree, we did! After that song, Rick pointed out something (paraphrased) "If we all lived in a small town, about now we'd be saying, 'Hot Damn! We got us a band!'" Rick, we DO have us a band, small town or not. Me thinks perhaps Big Mick might even blush a bit (but the lighting in the cabin was dim)... Now in the very,very early morning hours after a few wee drams of Cock of the North there are some shaky moments. But Ricks concert and Kathy Westra's are both reasonably done. The barn had surprisingly good lighting. I haven't been brave enough to review any end of the night footage.... the one's with the interesting camera angles. |

David can really improvise on that gargantuan instrument, and he can retune it faster than I've ever seen done. Lucy sings in a very striking fashion, I asked her where she developed her voice and she lived "deep in Appalachia" for a long time. Perhaps we'll get them to visit on the Cat. W-O |

I will leave it to her to tell the tales of various waitresses we endured. The best line (to Kendall in horror from a lady with no sense of humor): "Are these ears garbage cans?" So many familiar faces. So much wonderful music. So much laughing and crying. Too many Getaway highlights to tell. Being chased off to bed by Allan at 4:30 AM on Saturday and being lulled to sleep by "All The Pretty Little Horses" on Sunday. The "Pitiful Songs" workshop and a man named Ron (from that Gospel quartet minus one?) who knew at least as many tearjerkers as I. The Old Time Country workshop with nothing after 1947. Kathy Westra almost apologizing for starting her workshop with a tune from 1903 only to discover that everyone knew the "silly" chorus. And a new Mudcat friend. Homeless is a treasure even if he doesn't prefer older women. In keeping with the Getaway tradition, he arrived stating that he only knew one or two songs and couldn't sing them anyway then discovered that he could and would sing and had at least a dozen more. He is a tall cuddly young man with a gentle soul. Don't miss a chance to meet him...oh...and his girlfriend too. SINSULL, ducking for cover |
