My friends cats like the "cat food" from the local Chineese Takaway (duck in pankakes) or the bacon in bacon sandwiches from the Sandwich Shop. They are pedigree Oriental/Siameese cats and therefore have been brought up by their mothers to expect nothing less! They now have an account at the sandwich shop and a "pussy bag" of bacon pieces is supplied with every bacon sandwich that comes into the house. Its the only way to distract them so you can have some yourself! Very expensive tastes!!! |

I think they put some kind of kitty dope in it to get the little furballs addicted. Then they know you have no choice but to come back at least once a month to buy more catfood. In fact, we ran out of WM catfood about a week ago. Our four cats have only been grudgingly nibbling at the stuff I got from the Mom and Pop store down the road. All four of them are in the same room of the house as I am typing this. This is a very uncommon occurence as each of them hates at least one of the other three. When sworn enemies appear to get along peacefully, something conspiratorial must be going on. I think I should go to WalMart in the morning and get another 25 pounds of cat Bruce |

He seems to really like the DOGS' canned food, though. Thumper will not eat People Food. He will also not take treats out of your hand. Anyway, you could leave your dinner plate right in front of him, and unless there's fish on it, he could care less. He might sniff at it, but that's about it. Buddy Cat, who has since gone on to Kitty Heaven, was a different story. Leave your milk glass on the table for two seconds, and he'd have his grubby little paw right in it. |

We managed to persuade Cerys that she was really only interested in the cream part of the cocktail ( gave her a bit for herself ) but she still kept coming over and licking out the nigh on empty glass. Mind you, I had a tortoiseshell called Rainbow who liked dry white wine ( to the point of inebriation!). Clinton, the above mentioned Rainbow did severely maul two fully grown show dalmations ( who were not shown after their encounter with Rainbow, one of them nearly lost one of it's eyes...). A while back, physiologists and psychologists thought that cats were colour-blind. (they love heart and liver, and the farmer's market stuff is cheap ,a free range and antibiotic free). I mix it with cooked millet, which they digest easier than rice,and sometimes oats (which Cougar our 13 year old white longhair had for baby food and still goes nuts over); and whatever veggies are good from my garden, farmer's market or grocery store. They love carrots, will kill for fresh cooked broccoli and asparagus, and dig mushrooms, potatoes(which they don't get too often), parsnips and beets. I cook these till just done and mush them up with the meat and grain. I do supplement with Taurine and a few vitamins. I also give treats from the table (yes they are spoiled), a nibble of any of the above I'm having. They will eat cooked asparagus and broccoli WITHOUT any butter! Though they will also eat butter, yoghurt and sour cream if they find it unguarded. I will say that most of my cats (I have 6) look half their age and almost never have to go to the vet, and my oldest cat was 22 when she finally went this summer. (I've been making their food for about 10 years, and I'm convinced it is responsible for their good health and youthful appearance, though Cougar says it's her genes). Two who were older took their time adapting to the new food, but grinding it up so it looks like canned food and putting a little fish oil on it helps. Bekki |

They then discovered Felix tins and are mere shadows of their former selves, much more active and sleek and seem to be enjoying a new lease of life. Then back in April, one of them (Danny) was diagnosed with a tumor that's probably cancer. The vet found it in a regular physical, so he didn't have any symptoms. Anyway, the vet suggested holistic treatment with supplements and anti-oxidants and what-not. And I changed the whole gang to something called PHD Feline formula. I order it over the internet from their website which is http://www.phdproducts.com . I don't know how well it's working for him, but Danny is still a happy, comfortable cat. All four of them have slimmed down considerably on this, and since they are all either 13 or 14 years old, it's probably good for them. Not an sales pitch, but just fyi. |

They LOVED the canned mackerel I used as a "transition" food however! I have two kittens (older) who seem to be having digestive problems and I am wondering if a fresh food diet would help...of maybe not giving them wet food? How dod you get your cats to switch from commercial food??? I read and hear that this is best for them and helps avoid all the kidney failure and other problems commercial kibble and canned food can cause in later life...but short of fasting them for days how do you get them to eat it? I have six cats (plus the two kits who are going to be adopted by friends soon) ranging in age from 13 to 4. I tend to feed them urinray tract health food from Science Diet, interspersed with Dental Diet (Friskies) and basic Purina cat chow. Also they like Trader Joe's dry cat food. I also give them canned cat tuna (bad for them but they love it) and "special diet" canned food...and try to give them the "good stuff" (supposedly fewer scary tumor bits in it) as often as I can... They are fine though one of my older ones drinks too much water...a bad sign as cats shouldn't drink too much (they say this is symptomatic of the later kidney failure), and another gets a tapeworm occasionally. She eats ravenously and loses weight. I put ground pumpkin seeds on her food and the problem goes away in a couple of days. Peg |

One of ours will steal them out of your mouth and also likes green olives and ANY leftovers. The other one will only eat cat food. The way to get cats your cats to switch is to give them 'only' the new food. They might, themselves, choose to go without for a day or two, but you needn't feel guilty if you are providing them with a good diet. Another way is to get a dog. The dog will eat anything that you give the cats, so the cats get in the habit of eating what you give them before the dog can get to it. Of course then they will also eat the dog food which is not too good for them, so we used to have to supplement their food with high protein stuff like canned fish. |

Oh and enjoys lightly poached cod occasionally - usually when I've fallen over her tail & upset her. Wolfie (the feral one that auditioned for the vacancy along with 5 others the day after our previous stray had to be put to sleep) has really got his teeth into the odd raw chicken drumstick. He rarely leaves anything but the knee (? knobbly bit), but I usually take the skin off first. Obviously I'd never let him near cooked chicken bones - much too brittle & can kill a cat. |

But I found that certain things such as milk and offal (liver kidney etc), disagreed with their digestive systems. A few years ago we were given some free samples of pouches, after that panther became more fussy and decided that she didn't like the type of cat chow that was all mushed into one solid lump but liked the stuff that had small pieces in jelly or gravy, which since she was then about 14/15 we decided if that was what she wanted , that was what she could have. I'm now down to one cat, we lost panther back in September but 18 &1/2 is quite old for a cat so it wasn't entirely unexpected. I'm just dreading it when Tom goes - he's 16 & 1/2 , he was one of Panther's kittens. At the moment he's still very active, independant and will eat anything not nailed down or moves slowly enough for him to catch. I just wish he'd stop leaving his "catch " on the doorstep. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cat Food From: JohnInKansas Date: 09 Nov 02 - 04:28 AM The three cats who own my spouse thrived for at least a year or so on Purina cat chow only, but when one of them started staying out late at night (sometimes for a couple of nights) it was obvious that some neighbor had taken pity on the "poor hungry little terrorists" and was feeding them. To keep them at home, she started stuffing them with canned "real food." Since I do most of the bulk shopping, I usually get whatever is the cheapest, bring them home and "randomize" the cans so they'll have some variety, and stack them in the cupboard above their "dining space." Despite the spouses insistence that "they won't eat ...." (fill in a different kind about every three days) I find that if she's away, I can skip one feeding, and they think that anything they're served at the next feeding is delicious. Although they're mostly indifferent to "kitty treats" like catnip (probably due to massive overdose at tender ages) the one thing that two of the three will aggressively attack for - is the TetraMin Tropical Flake fish food I feed to the gouramis. If I don't put a little down for them to munch on, it's almost impossible to feed the fish. The cats will attempt to climb the glass sides of the aquarium to knock the container out of my hands to get at it. Maybe with a little repackaging and a good marketing campaign...(?) John |
