You will be given a reserved card to put on your seat(s) of choice. www.heavenst.com www.rollandgoseasongs.com Roll & Go is a collective of men and women who love to sing sea shanties and other songs of the sea. Most of the members met each other through the Portland Folk Club. Over the past twelve years their spirited performances have earned them a growing reputation among festival and concert goers in Maine's midcoast area. Singing mostly unaccompanied, they combine strong solo work with tight harmonies on the refrain and chorus. Some songs are backed up by banjo, guitar, concertina or penny whistle. With Roll & Go you'll hear the old songs brought back to life, and some newer songs that highlight current conditions in our merchant marine and fishing industry. Whether you're young or old, you're bound to have a lot of fun! Selected Comments "I don't know of another sea-music group in the U.S. today who are putting forth so much effort and energy to polish their craft. And they do so while preserving the sailor's understanding of working songs of the sea: tempos are slow and methodical, the singing lusty and the harmonies spare. This is surely the way the shellbacks sang, outward bound from Boston and 'Frisco for the distant seaports of the Seven Seas." Bob Webb – Folkhistorian, Curator & Shantysinger "Roll & Go brings to life the songs of those who sailed the Seven Seas, and does so with great spirit and energy." Bill Bonyun – Folklorist & Folksinger "From robust shanties to haunting fo'c'sle ballads, to songs by and about today's sailors, Roll & Go sings with good humor and heartfelt energy. I was also impressed by the group's truly deep interest in sea music and nautical subjects. Cheers and Fair Winds to Roll & Go!" Don Sineti – Marine Artist & Shantyman |

Subject: RE: Roll & Go House Concert From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Oct 02 - 11:34 AM We had a lovely evening at Alison's house, with the wind and rain raging outside. A small but appreciative audience and with the evening functioning as a splendid warm-up for Roll & Go members for our concert next Saturday in deepest darkest Houlton, up in the County. I do have this memory of Dick leading "Mingulay Boat Song" cheerfully singing "Turn her head round into the heather(instead of the weather)" which was a somewhat alarming image of how to bring one's ship safely back to port. Then there was the ship's clock on the wall which kindly chimed in between songs. Lovely goodies to eat, including the important chocolate group. For those in the midcoast Maine area, our next "public" event will be the Last Shanty Swap at the China Sea Marine Trading Co. in Portland on Saturday, November 23rd, 4 pm on (see new thread for details). Cheerily, Charley Noble |
