Subject: Lyr Req: Whisky cow (Dutch)
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 24 Oct 02 - 05:16 AM

Having seen a preponderance of drinking songs, I wondered if anyone could shed light on this one. I remember only a little of it, Dutch not being a language in which I'm fluent. I heard it about 30 years ago, and seem to recall the first two lines of music are similar to the first two lines of "The Grand old Duke of York". The song tells of a farmer with a wonderous cow which gives whisky instead of milk!
Approximate first two lines are:
"Der was een Arnhem man
his name was 'drunken Yeow"

Any takers ??

Nigel

Subject: Lyr Add: DE WHISKEY KOE / THE WHISKEY COW (Dutch)

Hi

On the site Campfire-songs I found the lyrics. (http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeedee/index.html)

Refrein:

Refrein

De koe werd niet gemolken
Zij voelde zich niet wel
Zij sloop het wenteltrappie af
En sprong toen uit haar vel
De whiskey spatte in het rond
En droop toen langs de wand
Zo vond de arme koe haar eind
Betreurd door 't ganse land.

Refrein

De koe, die werd begraven
Men stopte haar onder 't zand
Dronken Joe stond te wenen
Met een melkfles in de hand
Maar veertien dagen later
Toen stond men werkelijk paf
Jeneverbessen groeiden toen
Als paarlen op d'r graf.

Refrein

A funny song about a man named Joe (but pronounce "You", it has to rhime on "Koe" (sounds like Coo)) who has a whiskey-cow in his attc.
If you want the translation or pronounciation, contact me.

Subject: Lyr Added: THE WHISKEY COW (translated from Dutch)
From: Letty

My translation:

THE WHISKEY COW

There once was a poor man
His name was "Drunken Joe"
Who happened to have at his attic
A genuine whiskey cow
And whenever he felt like having a sip
- which could happen -
Then he snuck up the winding stairs
And drank like a fish (lit.: a cannon)

CHORUS: O, o, what a little rogue
The whiskey streamed from her udders
Drink, drink, drink as much as you want
Twenty for a shilling

Such a pity for the poor man
But it was against the law
That he had put a running cask of whiskey
On the attic
The sheriff and his men
Got wind of it
They sealed the cow's udders
And arrested the poor man. CHORUS

The cow was not milked
She did not feel well
She snuck down the winding stairs
And burst out of her skin (nb: this is also a way of saying you're very angry)
Whiskey splashed about
And dripped from the wall
And thus the poor cow died
Mourned all over the country. CHORUS

The cow was buried
They put her under the soil
Drunken Joe stood and cried
With a milk bottle in his hand
But fourteen days later
People were flabbergasted
When juniper berries (nb: used for 'jenever', gin) grew
Like pearls on her grave. CHORUS

"If I had a cow that gave such milk
I'd dress her in the finest silk;
I'd feed her on the best of hay
And milk her forty times a day."

Sorry Dick, but looking at the scansion (and admitting that some of my Dutch pronunciation may be wrong!) I can't see this scanning to Little Brown Jug. Although your fragment does

Nigel

Me and my wife live all alone 8
In a little log hut we call our own; 10
She loves gin and I love rum, 7
And don't we have a lot of fun! 8

Chorus:
Ha, ha, ha, you and me, 6
Little brown jug, don't I love thee! 8
Ha, ha, ha, you and me, 6
Little brown jug, don't I love thee! 8

When I go toiling on the farm 8
I take the little jug under my arm; 10
Place it under a shady tree, 8
Little brown jug, 'tis you and me. 8
