This is by way of experiment.

There seems to be some problem when people use quotes (") in the "subject" of their posting.

The name of the quotation symbol is " (Just as the name of the left angle bracket is <). What I wrote in the subject box was:

  "Using quotes in a thread"  

As with all SGML (and hence HTML) documents if the name of a symbol is followed by a space or another special symbol (such as &) then you can leave out the trailing semi-colon. A line break made with "enter" counts as a space.
