Can anyone think of any good songs about music and its relevance/importance in our lives? Here are a few examples:

Drift Away by Dobie Gray
Magic Power by Triumph
State of Mind by Clint Black
Listen to the Music by the Doobie Brothers

Know any more?

Thanks!

forgot to mention "The Train Carrying Jimmie Rodgers Home" (Greg Brown). The song talks about how, though times were hard, "...when we heard that man sing, we knew somehow we'd make it through."

CD maker, there are a couple of Jewish (Yiddish) songs that fit. If dancing counts, there is "Sha! Stil! [Der Rebbe Tanzt] -- the song says, "Hush, be quiet! The rabbi is going to dance ... and when the rabbi dances, the wind dances with him, so clap your hands, ... the table dances with him, so tap your feet, ... and when the rabbi sings the holy songs, the devil lies trembling on the floor."

The other one, in English, is called "I Had A Little Overcoat." This song is in Rise Up Singing. The singer tells of having an overcoat that wore out, so he made it into a jacket, which wore out, so he made it into a vest, which wore out, so he made it into a hat, which wore out, so he made it into a pocket, which wore out, so he made it into a song (which, presumably, won't wear out.) I can't recall the Yiddish title.

Speaking of foot-tapping, how about the CCR song "Down on the Corner?"

Also, there's Chris Williamson's "Song Of The Soul."

And another Neil Diamond one, "Play Me."

And the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

LISDOONVARNA

How's it goin' there everybody,
From Cork, New York, Dundalk, Gortahork and Glenamaddy.
Here we are in the County Clare
It's a long, long way from here to there.
There's the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher,
And the Tulla and the Kilfenora,
Miko Russell, Doctor Bill,
Willy Clancy and Noel Hill.
Flutes and fiddles everywhere.
If it's music you want,
You should go to Clare.

CHORUS
G          C
      Oh, Lisdoonvarna
      G                                 C
      Lisdoon, Lisdoon, Lisdoon, Lisdoonvarna!
Everybody needs a break,
Climb a mountain or jump in a lake.
Some head off to exotic places,
Others go to the Galway Races.
Mattie goes to the South of France,
Jim to the dogs, Peter to the dance.
A cousin of mine goes potholing,
A cousin of heres loves Joe Dolan.
Summer comes around each year,
We go there and they come here.
Some jet off to ... Frijiliana,
But I always go to Lisdoonvarna.

CHORUS

I always leave on a Thursday night,
With me tent and me groundsheet rolled up tight.
I like to hit Lisdoon,
In around Friday afternoon.
This gives me time to get me gear together,
I don't need to worry about the weather.
Ramble in for a pint of stout,
And you'd never know who'd be hangin' about!
There's a Dutchman playing a mandolin,
And a German looking for Liam Óg O'Floinn.
And there's Adam, Bono and Garrett Fitzgerald,
Gettin' their photos taken for the Sunday World.
Finbarr, Charlie and Jim Hand,
And they drinkin' pints to bate the band.
.. Ain't it grand?

CHORUS

The multitudes, they flocked and thronged,
To hear the music and the songs.
Motorbikes and Hi-ace vans,
With bottles - barrels - flagons - cans.
Mighty craic. Loads of frolics,
Pioneers and alcoholics,
PLAC, SPUC and the FCA,
Free Nicky Kelly and the IRA.
Hairy chests and milk-white thighs,
And mickey dodgers in disguise.
Mc Graths, O'Briens, Pippins, Coxs,
Massage parlours in horse boxes.
There's amhráns, bodhráns, amadáns,
Arab sheiks, Hindu Sikhs, Jesus freaks,
RTE are makin' tapes, takin' breaks and throwin' shapes.
This is heaven, this is hell.
Who cares? Who can tell?
(Anyone for the last few Choc Ices, now?)

CHORUS

A 747 for Jackson Browne,
They had to build a special runway just to get him down.
Before the Chieftains could start to play,
Seven creamy pints came out on a tray.
Shergar was ridden by Lord Lucan,
Seán Cannon did the backstage cookin'.
Clannad were playin' "Harry's Game",
   Christy was singin' "Nancy Spain".
Mary O'Hara and Brush Shields,
Together singin' "The Four Green Fields".
Van the Man and Emmy Lou,
   Moving Hearts and Planxty too!

CHORUS

Everybody needs a break,
Climb a mountain or jump in a lake.
Sean Doherty goes to the Rose of Tralee,
Oliver J. Flanagan goes swimming in the Holy Sea.
But I like the music and the open air,
So every Summer I go to Clare.
Coz Woodstock, Knock nor the Feast of Cana,
Can hold a match to Lisdoonvarna.

CHORUS

I've Just Heard Willy Nelson / Encore

C                                                 F                C
I just heard William Nelson - he was singin' of his hard life on the road
                                                     F                G
And his lyrics set me thinkin' it's much the same no matter where you go,
         F                                                                                             G
Be it Tulsk or Bord Na Móna
       Dm          G                Dm             G
   I've received my education in the lounges of the nation;
            Dm               G                  C
After twenty years I'm still goin' fairly well.

I've played every lounge in Ireland from Dingle right up to Donegal,
I've done 'Nancy Spain' on stages where no other ballad singers go at all,
From the Rising Sun in Brownstown to the Unyoke Inn just outside Wexford Town,
Ballymurphy and the Bogside, Ballinamore and even once in Ballinasloe.

   CHORUS
F                                           C
      If I get an encore I go home feelin' like a king;
               d          G         d            G               C
It's a two way situation - I get a lot of pleasure when I sing.

When I first heard Tommy Makem and the Clancys my future it was sealed,
I was bitten by the music bug and the wound it never healed.
When I got my first guitar my fingers bled until I learnt a chord or two;
I pulled on my Aran sweater, wrote me Ma a goodbye letter
And started singin' in O'Donoghue's.

   CHORUS

I was playin' in the Meeting Place when half the Special Branch came through the door.
They were lookin' for McGlinchey but they never found who they were lookin' for.
They started listenin' to my gig and hung around till after the show,
So if I ever need a taxi-plate or a massage at the special rate
The Special Branch they told me where to go.

   CHORUS

Christy Moore

How could I forget my favorite! "Happiness is singing together when day is through." (Sorry about the caps, cut & paste...)

HAPPINESS (from "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown")

HAPPINESS IS FINDING A PENCIL.
PIZZA WITH SAUSAGE
TELLING THE TIME.
HAPPINESS IS LEARNING TO WHISTLE.
TYING YOUR SHOE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.

HAPPINESS IS PLAYING THE DRUM IN YOUR OWN SCHOOL BAND.
AND HAPPINESS IS WALKING HAND IN HAND.
HAPPINESS IS TWO KINDS OF ICE CREAM.
KNOWING A SECRET.
CLIMBING A TREE.
HAPPINESS IS FIVE DIFFERENT CRAYONS.
CATCHING A FIREFLY.
SETTING HIM FREE.

HAPPINESS IS BEING ALONE EVERY NOW AND THEN.
AND HAPPINESS IS COMING HOME AGAIN.
HAPPINESS IS MORNING AND EVENING,
DAY TIME AND NIGHT TIME TOO.
FOR HAPPINESS IS ANYONE AND ANYTHING AT ALL
THAT'S LOVED BY YOU.

HAPPINESS IS HAVING A SISTER.
SHARING A SANDWICH.
GETTING ALONG.
HAPPINESS IS SINGING TOGETHER WHEN DAY IS THROUGH,
AND HAPPINESS IS THOSE WHO SING WITH YOU.
HAPPINESS IS MORNING AND EVENING,
DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME TOO.
FOR HAPPINESS IS ANYONE AND ANYTHING AT ALL
THAT'S LOVED BY YOU.

Mary, "Is Sing, Sing, Sing the one with "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...) " -- No, but that's a good song about music, too.

"Put Another Nickel In (All I want is lovin' you and music, music, music)" is the one titled "Music, Music, Music," which Teresa Brewer recorded in 1950.

-----

Another song about music:
"Please, Mister, Please (don't play B-17, it was his song, it was our song, but it's over. ... I don't ever want to hear that song again.")

How about "Singin' In The Bathtub?"

If you include songs about playing fiddles, dancing, etc., there are lots of Irish songs that fit (e.g., Finnegan's Wake; Phil, The Fluther's Ball, The Kerry Dance, etc.). Then there are country songs like "Bonaparte's Retreat," "If Ya Want To Play In Texas, You Gotta Have a Fiddle In The Band," "San Antonio Stroll," etc.

others:
"Rock Me To Sleep"
"Chanson D'Amour"
"The Hurdy Gurdy Man"
"Nashville Cats"
"Songs My Mother Taught Me"
"Play That Funky Music, White Boy"
"Your Mama Don't Dance And Your Daddy Don't Rock And Roll"
"Missouri Waltz"
"Killing Me Softly With His Songs"
"It's Like A Symphony"
"Melody Of Love"
"My Melody of Love" (Bobby Vinton)
"A Lovers' Concerto"
"Broken Hearted Melody"
"The Y'all Come Back Saloon" ("...She played tambourine with a silver jingle, and she must have known the words to about a million tunes...")
"All God's Critters Got a Place In The Choir"
"Daddy Sang Bass"

Thanks Genie, I saw that after I posted. And Masato got Ring, Ring, de Banjo.

How about "Cattle Call?" I know it by Eddy Arnold, but it appears that LeAnn Rimes sang a duet with him also.

CATTLE CALL

The cattle are prowlin'
The coyotes are howlin'
Way out where the doggies roam
Where the spurs are a jinglin'
And the cowboy is singin'
His lonesome cattle call

[Yodels]

He rides in the sun
'Til his days work is done,
And he rounds up the cattle each fall

[Yodels]

Singing his cattle call

For hours he would ride
On the range far and wide
When the night winds blows up like smoke
His heart is a feather
In all kinds of weather
He sings his cattle call

[Yodels]

He's browned as a fairy
From riding the prairie
And he sings with an old western drawl

[Yodels]

Singin' his cattle call

SING ALONG WITH ME (Phil Ochs)

When times are bad and you're feeling sad
Got more troubles than you've ever had
There's one sure way to make you feel glad
the whole world will come to you
here's all you gotta do: just walk right through that door.
Sing a song when things go wrong
Of a tune you'll be smiling soon
Find yourself a melody, sing along with me.

When troubles are out and you're feeling down
You can chase those troubles away
send your blues back to yesterday
It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor
Walk right through that door.
*chorus*

And when your own true love is giving you pain
makes you ride that lonesome train
feel like you're going in sane
whistle that true love from your mind
leave her far behind.
*chorus*

No doubt there are better known versions of some of these.   These are just the versions I am familiar with.

Music And Friends - Simani

I Give You Music - The McCarters

When I Hear The Music - Susan McCann

I Like To Sing The Old Songs - The Phipps Family

Hillbilly Pickin' Ramblin' Girl - Catherine Britt

Songs My Mother Taught Me - Charlotte Church

Singing The Blues - Marty Robbins

This Is My Song - Judith Durham

Whistle As You Go - Sara Storer

Old Songs - Hot Mud Family

Two Singers And One Song - Slim Dusty & Anne Kirkpatrick

I'm Gonna Sing, Sing, Sing - Hank Williams

Well, there's a few. I THINK I removed most of the ones I had on my list that have already been mentioned.

I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing

"...and the doctor said, 'Give him JUG BAND MUSIC. It seems to make him feel just fine." (Lovin' Spoonful)

Jim Kweskin's "Jug Band Music," too.

"It's one of those songs that you hear now and then, ... one of those crazy old songs..."

OK, here's a really obscure one. There was a musical in the 1950s called "Adam and Athena" (Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell, Vic Damone, etc.) that actually had a pretty good score. One song that Jane Powell sang was called "Vocalize" - in which she incorporated some vocal exercises. I think the composer may have been Harry Warren. (It was one of the well-established popular music and movie songwriters of the '30s, '40s, '50s.)

Then there was a '60s/'70s song called "Look What They've Done To My Song." And Janis Ian wrote one called "Would You Like To Sing My Sing," and there was one that both Maria Muldaur and Olivia Newton-John sang called "I Never Did Sing You A Love song."

Of course Mark Graham's "Zen Gospel Singing" is a treasure!

Guest, DK why, but your comment reminded me of that old song that goes:
"...The music goes round and round, oh, oh, oh, oh, and it comes out here."

Still free-associating, I'm reminded of Berlin's "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody."

He also had some amusing observations on a bugler playing "Reveille" in "Oh, How I Hate To Get Up In The Morning."
And of course, there's his "Alexander's Ragtime Band."

Other songs from WWI or WWII include "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy Of Company B"
"Eight To The Bar"
"Beer Barrel Polka" ("...Sing "boom- tar-ra-rel, sing out a song of good cheer..." and "There's music and there's dancing ..." and "They want to throw their cares away, they all go 'la-de-da-de-ay.")

Can't recall all the words, but doesn't the Aerosmith song "Dream On" have a lot of lines about singing?

Then there's Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

For Christmas there's "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Do You Hear What I Hear" ("...a song, a song high above the trees with a voice as big as the sea...").

There's another thread lamenting the decline of the Incredible String Band. But at the beginning they were so good. A lot of their stuff was about making music and they had some great lines. From memory ….

"They say it's only butterflies
Don't let your dreams get in your eyes
But Orpheus made the sun rise
'Cos he knew how to play."

And a great song, When The Music Starts To Play.

"When the music starts to play let me around."

Think I'll go find the CD and have a listen.

Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy (recorded by The Watersons)

Who Will Sing For Me? (DT)

Who Will Sing for Me
Carter Stanley third verse John McCutcheon?

1. Oft I sing for my friends,
When this cold form I see
When I reach my journey's end
Tell me who will sing for me

Chorus:
I wonder who
(I wonder who)
Will sing for me (will sing for me)
When I come to the cross by the silent sea,
Tell me who will sing for me

2. When friends have gathered 'round
   And look down on me
Will they turn and walk away
Or will they sing one song for me

3. So I'll sing until the end
   And helpful try to be
   Ever knowing there'll be some
Who will sing one song for me

Has anybody mentioned "Those were the Days?"

On a lesser-known Gracie Slick & Friends album entitled *Manhole* is the song "It's Only Music." One I throw on and play over and over and over when I need it. In fact, I think I'll go throw it on now.

Our Jeri has a really beautiful song called "Why We Sing" based on the threads of that name. If you're nice she might sing it to ya!! (Or you can wait just a tad longer to get it on the Mudcat Sampler CD Series!!) (Coming soon to a folk community near you!!!!)

"Banjo and the 'possum" is much like "Ring, Ring de Banjo," mentioned earlier.

Even "Marching thru Georgia" starts, "Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song ...."

And "Tenting Tonight" -- "We are tenting tonight on the old camp ground; give us a song to cheer ...."

The British music hall piece, "He Played His Ukulele as the Ship Went Down."

"Wayfaring Stranger"--"I'm goin' there to see my Jesus, to sing His praise forever more ...."

"The Trading Song," sort of. "Johnny took his fiddle and he went on home."

A lot of Brit ballads have an optional switch verse for the beginning, so a singer of one gender can sing a song obviously specific to the other--involving pregnancy for example. "Katy Cruel" sung by a man could start, "When I was a-riding down to London City, a maid from her window sang this song so pretty ...." And that idea can transfer to "Jordie," "False William," etc., etc. and even etc.

What's the name of the James Taylor one ("It's All Right"?) "I don't known no love songs, I can't play the blues anymore, but I can sing this song ...."

There are undoubtedly many more, but I have to quit now. The mail man just came and I need to check my mailbox for millions from Nigeria.

Another of my favorites: a small gem of an animated film entitled "The Devil and Daniel Mouse" -- yes, a takeoff on "The Devil and Daniel Webster" -- the hero saves himself and foolish girlfriend with the power of music and a little song called "Look where the music can take you."

Look where the music can tkae you, if you let it go, ...

composer: John Sebastian
