Know both the original and Schantieman's versions.

If you want to sing them, although they are best as monologues the Scottish tune to "Tangle o' the Isles" serves.

The above song, which he credits to J. Milton Hayes, is on Sean TYrrell's excellent current album 'Belladonna At The Bar' (Longwalk Records).

...and then, of course, there was the comic version that two people did - I can't for the life of me remember who - with the actions and props including a ball (at its height...) quite a lot of water and mess, and great hilarity.

Was one of them Jack Douglas?

There's a dirty stinking p*ss house to the north of Waterloo
There's another one for ladies further down
And it's kept by Sally Tucker
For a shilling you can...

do I have to go on?

If anyone really wants the words I'll have a look in my ancient book entitled 'More Rugby Songs'.

I agree about the original - very dramatic, piano accompaniment (chords only) but definitely spoken, no sung.

yeah, Sean Tyrrell's version is his own, I only meant to point out that the author had already put it to music way back when, in answer to Diz, though it's pretty well known as a recitation.

I didn't think that it was written by Hayes. I'm fairly sure that Sean Tyrrell wrote his own music for it. Its one of the best songs I've ever heard.

Subject: ADD: THE GREEN TIE OF THE LITTLE YELLOW DOG
From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy
Date: 28 Oct 02 - 03:21 PM

it was originally put to music by the author himself and Cuthbert Clarke in 1911, it's on one of Sean Tyrrells cd, can't remember which, but I have it. Here are a couple of parodies by Billy Bennett:

THE GREEN TIE OF THE LITTLE YELLOW DOG
by
Billy Bennett
(Almost a Gentleman)

There's a little sallow man lives north of Waterloo,
And he owns the toughest music hall in town,
There are broken-hearted comics, there's a graveyard for them too
And the gallery gods are forever gazing down.

He was known as Fat Caroo in the pubs round Waterloo,
And he wore a green tie with a diamond pin;
He was worshipped in the ranks by the captain of the swanks,
And the coalman's daughter loved his double chin.

He had loved her all along and despite his ong-bong-pong
The fact that she loved him they say was right,
Though her complexion was a fake, and her teeth were put and take
Put in by day and taken out by night.

'Twas the fifteenth anniversary of her twenty-second year,
So he smiled at her as sweetly as a hog
And asked what present she would like. And jestingly she said:
"Your green tie for my little yellow dog."

Fat Caroo seemed in a trance and his heart slipped through his pants,
But he tried his utmost not to look a wreck,
So he handed her the tie and kissed her hand good bye-
When he bowed his head she bit his neck.

Later on Caroo came to, his tie had gone, it's true
And his tiepin with it! He seemed in a fog.
He rushed liked mad to find, that she'd tied that tie behind
To the tailpiece of her little yellow dog.

She was screaming like a child, the dog was running wild,
Biting policemen as he galloped up the straight;
For the little dog, called Tom, when he wagged his to and from,
Felt the tie pin urge him on to meet his fate.

The dog returned at dawn with his windscreen slightly torn,
And unseen took something from the lady's room.
To another room he flew, saying: "That's for Fat Caroo,"
And silently he slunk out in the gloom.

When Caroo jumped into bed, he'd 've wakened up the dead
With a scream he as he fell like a hog;
Her false teeth, they were buried in the seat of Fat Caroo-
'Twas the vengeance of that little yellow dog.

There's a cockeyed yellow poodle to the north of Conga Pooch;
There's a little hot cross bun that's turning green;
There's a double-jointed woman doing tricks in Chu-Chin-Chow,
And you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din.

THE GREEN TIE FOR THE LITTLE YELLOW DOG
by
Scott Dobson and Dick Irwin

There's a bow-legged, knock-kneed bus stop to the north of Jarrow Slacks
There's a social club that nestles in the town
There's a broken hearted barmaid shedding salt tears in her beer
As the one-arm bandit sadly gazes down

She was known as Crafty Lil, cos she fiddled with the till
She was faster than the Steward dared to tell
From South Shields to Derwent Haugh she was worshipped by the staff
And the Concert Chairman fancied her as well

His name was Jacky Graham and one night he set her home
As hand in hand they wandered through the fog
He said "What can I give you, to prove my love is true?"
She says "A green tie for me little yellow dog"

From Red Row to Percy Main, Jacky Graham searched in vain
But a green tie he couldn't find in Geordieland
He was even known to ramble through the Co-op Stores in Amble
And he searched in every pawn shop in the land

One night, out on the beer, he has this bright idea
"I'll take an air flight to Belfast,
They'll have green ties over there and there's maybe one to spare,
And me problem will be sorted out at last"

So he takes this plane to Belfast and goes straight into a shop
He says "I want a green tie and I don't care how dear"
But the feller serving on, handed him a petrol bomb
Saying "Get out! There's only orange ones in here!"

So, on the return flight with his trousers well alight
He was thinking on exactly what to do
It looked grim for poor old Jack, his future it looked black
And his backside was badly blistered too

So he got back home to Jarrow, his last hope was his old marro'
"Have you got a green tie in the house?" he says to Dan
"Well, green's unlucky, you silly bugger" Jack says "You're telling me!,
And I've got the scars to prove it, Canny man"

It comes the Sunday night, no Concert Chairman was in sight
The entertainment at the club was just a flop
The Secretary, Mr Lauder had to call out "Best of order"
When the bingo-caller suddenly shouts out "Stop!"

"I've just been round the back and there was poor old Jack,
He was lying in the netty like a log,
His pint was on the ground and round his neck was wound,
A green tie for the little yellow dog"

There's a bow-legged, knock-kneed bus stop to the north of Jarrow
Slacks There's a broken-hearted barmaid sippin' Brown
There's a poor old yellow dog still waiting for his tie
As the one-arm bandit sadly gazes down

(Special thanks to Ray Worthy, Hartleypool)

Another vote for monologue, lots of scope for dramatic delivery, I used to be very impressed by my Granny doing this one.

it's been set to music by a couple, try Sean Tyrrell first, there's been a recent thread on it you can search.

Subject: Tune Req: The Green Eye of the Yellow God
From: Mr Happy

can anyone supply the tune for this please?

The Green Eye of the Yellow God [J. Milton Hayes]

THERE'S a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town;
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down.

He was known as "Mad Carew" by the subs at Khatmandu,
He was hotter than they felt inclined to tell;
But for all his foolish pranks, he was worshipped in the ranks,
And the Colonel's daughter smiled on him as well.

He had loved her all along, with a passion of the strong,
The fact that she loved him was plain to all.
She was nearly twenty-one and arrangements had begun
To celebrate her birthday with a ball.

He wrote to ask what present she would like from Mad Carew;
They met next day as he dismissed a squad;
And jestingly she told him then that nothing else would do
But the green eye of the little Yellow God.

On the night before the dance, Mad Carew seemed in a trance,
And they chaffed him as they puffed at their cigars;
But for once he failed to smile, and he sat alone awhile,
Then went out into the night beneath the stars.

He returned before the dawn, with his shirt and tunic torn,
And a gash across his temple dripping red;
He was patched up right away, and he slept through all the day,
And the Colonel's daughter watched beside his bed.

He woke at last and asked if they could send his tunic through;
She brought it, and he thanked her with a nod;
He bade her search the pocket saying, "That's from Mad Carew,"
And she found the little green eye of the god.

She upbraided poor Carew in the way that women do,
Though both her eyes were strangely hot and wet;
But she wouldn't take the stone and Mad Carew was left alone
With the jewel that he'd chanced his life to get.

When the ball was at its height, on that still and tropic night,
She thought of him and hastened to his room;
As she crossed the barrack square she could hear the dreamy air
Of a waltz tune softly stealing thro' the gloom.

His door was open wide, with silver moonlight shining through;
The place was wet and slipp'ry where she trod;
An ugly knife lay buried in the heart of Mad Carew,
'Twas the "Vengeance of the Little Yellow God."

There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu
There's a little marble cross below the town;
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down.

cheers,

mr h
