Subject: Lyrics to Poor Boy
From: JVZ
Date: 08 Jun 98 - 02:37 PM

Back in the early 60s, I remember hearing a song on the radio which praised the American small farmer. It was a lively tune and the lyrics that I remember are from the chorus:

Poor boy, Ain't got no money, Poor boy, Ain't got no dough! But give that poor boy a pretty little girl, And look at that poor boy go. He's the backbone of the nation, The pappy of the land, With a ??? ??? ??? and a two dollar loan, He raised him a poor boy clan.

I would appreciate any additional lyrics (or corrections to the ones I have). Thank you.

I wasn't around for your first attempt. So forgive me if I repeat something that was already submitted. My only recollection of any song of the sort was sung by Elvis in his movie debut, "Love Me Tender". The lyrics are gone from my memory but it may have been a rehash of the song you are seeking. After all, they did that with the title song.

I think I would remember if it had been Elvis. Thanks anyway!

I know I promised to give up, but surely there is someone who remembers this song. It must have gotten alot of play time on the radio or I wouldn't have remembered as much as I do.

Found at http://www.cowboylyrics.com (but don't go there; AVG detected a virus).

LIFE OF A POOR BOY
E. C. "Mac" McCarty

When I was just a youngster and hardly in my teens,
I went to school on many a day in faded old blue jeans.
The patches they were many. The seat was all threadbare,
But a poor girl didn't notice and a poor boy didn't care.

CHORUS: A poor boy don't have no money. A poor boy don't have no dough.
Give a poor boy a pretty little girl and watch that poor boy go.
He's the backbone of the nation, the pappy of the land.
With a two-buck loan, he'll build him a home and raise him a poor-boy clan.

His worries they are many. His pleasures are but few,
But that don't worry a poor boy. His pappy had 'em too.
His livin' don't come easy. He has to sweat it out,
But he'd rather be a poor boy than a wealthy gadabout. CHORUS

If it wasn't for the poor boy, a lot would go undone.
The plow would never furrow or the mill would never run.
There wouldn't be no 'taters. There wouldn't be no beans.
The rich would all be poor boys in faded old blue jeans. CHORUS

[Recorded by Stonewall Jackson.]

I learned it from my daddy. The lyrics as I learned them were a bit different, less Irish and more Southern.
When I was just a poor boy and hardly in my teens, I went to a many a day in faded old blue jeans.
His worries they are plenty, his pleasures they are few,
But that don't worry poor boy his pappy had 'em too.
If it wasn't for the poor boy, a lot would go undone, the plows would never furrow and the mills would never run.
There wouldn't be no taters, there wouldn't be no beans, and the rich would all be poor boys in faded old blue jeans.
CHORUS:
Poor boy, ain't got no money, poor boy, ain't got no dough.
Give that boy a pretty little girl, and watch that poor boy go.
He's the backbone of the nation, he's the pappy of the land,
Give him two bucks alone, and he'll build him a home and raise him a poor boy clan.

https://www.classic-country-song-lyrics.com/lifeofapoorboylyricschords.html

Someone has put chords to the lyrics at that site in the event anyone needs them. Note the caveat on the site regarding the chords.
