Subject: Lyr Add: AN DÉIRC (from Danú)
From: GUEST,Philippa
Date: 03 Jun 04 - 06:44 AM

Lyrics from the Danú album "All Things Considered" are posted at Celtic Lyrics Corner (which features mostly Scottish Gaelic albums)

AN DÉIRC (ÓLAIM PUINS)

curfá (chorus - after each verse):
Ólaim punch 's ólaim tae
'S an lá ina déidh sin ólaim todaí
Ní bhím ar meisce ach uair sa ré
Mo ghrása 'n déirc is an té a cheap í

Maíodh gach n-aon a slí sa tsaol
Maíodh an chléir 's maíodh an ceannaí
Maíodh na mílte a maoin 's a réim
Maímse an déirc, 'sí an chéird is fearr í

Ar mo thíocht a luí ar thréad
An bhuí san fhéith 's na héimh ag leannaí
Báisteach dhaoirse 's rinn ar ghaoth
Ó táim le déirc 's ni baol do m' gharraí

Is sámh a bhím im' luí na gréin
Gan suim sa t-saol ach scléip 's starraíocht
Gan cháin gan chíos ach m'intinn saor
Nach fearr í 'n déirc ná céird 's ealaín?

Lá má bhím le híota tréith
Bead an lá ina dhéidh ag glaoch na gcannaí
Lá le fion 's arís gan bhraon
Mo ghrása 'n déirc 's an té a cheap í

Lyrics and tune are also in Ó Baoill, Ceolta Gael, published by Mercier Press, Cork -- words on line, compiler not credited, at http://www.angelfire.com/ri/domhan/claro03.html

I think I was wrong about the Dubliners; maybe I was thinking of "Preab san ól". I'm fairly sure I've heard Jimmy Crowley sing "ólaim puins"

If you indeed want the song with the words "ólaim puins is ólaim tae, an lá ina dhiadh sin ólaim toddy," I'll be able to post them but I can't say they'll be the same as sung by Danú.

Áine, don't you have a copy of "Abair Amhráin"

Didn't the Dubliners record "Ólaim Puins"??

Declan, I don't know if there's a usual tune to "Níl 'na lá", as there are at least 4 tunes fairly commonly used for it. I can't say I recall that song being sung to the usual tune for Ólaim Puins. for anyone interested in "Níl 'na lá", there are a few relevant threads on Mudcat, including a few versions in Irish and the Eng. language "There's the day"

At least I now know what we're talking about! I've always known it as "ólaim puins".

Regards

Áine,
The lyrics to all the songs on the CD are included. There is also a lovely version of "Idir Áird Mhór is Eochaill".

I always heard an Deirc being translated as charity which fits in with alms rather than the Dole, which is, after all and entitlement.

The song is probably more widely known by its first two words "Olaim Punch".

And do buy the album. Its close to being my nominee for Irish Traditional Album of the year, although there are a few other strong contenders. Other songs include a gorgeous version of "The Wee lass on the Brae" and "Jock Stuart" (Which is a duet between Ciaran O Geallbhain and Liam Clancy).

Martin, I've heard Ta na La sung to the air of "Olaim Punch", but its not the usual air for "Ta na la" that I know.

if it's Father Liam Inglis, then it's 18th c., and probably translated as ALMS, & likely having to do with St. Bridget (English spelling) who wished for vessels of alms for the poor, rather than 'THE DOLE' which would be it's more modern meaning, haven't heard it yet, but curious now

Dear Guest,

I'm definitely going to get the CD. Since you have a copy, are the lyrics included with the liner notes?

Thanks, Áine

It says in the liner notes of the CD that it was written by An tAthair Liam Inglis in the middle of 18th century.

You should buy the CD. It's a good one!

1.
"An Deirc" is listed in Filíocht na nGael" published in the 1940's

2. There's a song called "Mo grá-sa an déirc" in Vol. 1 of Walshe's "Sí Cheol" (air is given as Tá 'na lá . I think someone has that book..?

Looks like it might have been written by Pádraig Ó Buirn. Didn't find anything that looks like the words, though.

Does anyone have the lyrics to the song, An Déirc, that Danú performs on their 2002 CD release, All Things Considered? Is it a traditional song, or was it written by someone in the band?

Thanks, Áine
