Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Oct 02 - 04:43 PM I went to a concert at Whitby Folk Week in August, and Steve Tilston was scheduled to sing. I asked somebody at my table if he and Maggie Boyle were still married, since I didn't see them billed together any more. Somebody at the table shushed me, and whispered that Steve was sitting at the next table, three feet away from me. Oh, gee... Well, Steve and Maggie are apparently divorced, but they performed a number of songs together at Whitby. I had a chat with him after one concert, and found him to be a really nice guy. I think he said he's heard of Mudcat and stopped by a few times. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 30 Oct 02 - 06:50 PM Steve Tilston is definitely in my top two of English guitar players. (Actually , following Nic Jones' accident there are only two really good English guitar players, the other being Martin Simpson) Steve plays a very unusual assymetric guitar, designed and built by Martin Cole. The upper bout on the left hand side (ie the bit that makes contact with the chest) joins the body at the fourteenth fret. The upper bout on the opposing side joins the body at the sixteenth fret. As will be immediately apparent, this gives the advantages of a cutaway while maintaining the elegagnce of a traditional round shouldered guitar. The guitar is so elegantly constructed that at first glance you would never notice anything different about it. Beats me why the design hasn't been copied more. Murray |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: mooman Date: 30 Oct 02 - 09:45 PM Dear Murray, I agree Steve is in the top league of English guitarists but there are certainly far more than two really good English guitarists (I can supply names if necessary!). All the best moo P.S. I'll probably be in Florida again early December...maybe chance for a meet-up? |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 31 Oct 02 - 08:03 AM My tongue was ever so slightly in cheek, Richard .... Unfortunately I won't be back in Florida until January, there's more chance of a meet in England sometime. Murray |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Trevor Date: 31 Oct 02 - 08:24 AM Agree with all the stuff above in praise of Steve Tilston. I've seen him many times in the last couple of years in a wide range of venues, from a big auditorium (on the Fairport tour) to The Poppy House (our local cafe, with a capacity of 30) and have never been disappointed. He is a superb technician, in my opinion, and the stuff he writes bears comparison with anybody. Only little mark against was earlier this month when he was at the Loton Park do and the MC said she was worried about forgetting his name. He said she could call him what she liked as long as she didn't call him Trevor! Didn't he know his greatest fan was in the audience? (It did occur to me that he may have heard me trying to do some of his material!) Have a look here for a bit more info and contact details. |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: GUEST,Dartford Warbler Date: 19 Mar 07 - 06:31 PM Steve will be in the BBC Radio 3 studio chatting about his career with Andy Kershaw and playing a few songs accompanied by special guests Chris Parkinson and John Thorne on Monday 26 March 2007 from 23.15 |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 19 Mar 07 - 06:46 PM thanks for bringing that to our attention, Dartford Warbler. I (and doubtless you and others) will make sure this thread is kept refreshed prior to the broadcast date. Steve Tilston is just superb, try this video for a taste of his vocal and guitar skills.Steve Tilston singing "The Rambling Comber" Actually, I would rather like it if one or more of our more erudite members would care to watch this video and provide a detailed analysis of the time signature that Steve is playing in. And mooman , yes of course there are more than two great English guitarists. How could I have forgotten John Renbourn ? Tally stands at three .... |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Dave the Gnome Date: 19 Mar 07 - 07:09 PM Isn't he the lead singer with Aerosmith? :D |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 19 Mar 07 - 07:15 PM no, that's Bonnie Tyler, I think ... |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: GUEST Date: 19 Mar 07 - 08:06 PM And mooman , yes of course there are more than two great English guitarists. How could I have forgotten John Renbourn ? Tally stands at three .... Although he is resident in the USA, I must include Richard Thompson ! |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: GUEST,Dartford Warbler Date: 26 Mar 07 - 05:51 PM REMINDER Steve will be in the BBC Radio 3 studio chatting about his career with Andy Kershaw and playing a few songs accompanied by special guests Chris Parkinson and John Thorne on Monday 26 March 2007 from 23.15 |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Mar 07 - 06:14 PM Although I don't profess to be erudite (I don't see how anybody could be after he had all them little babies killed!) I reckon it's straight 5/4. |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 26 Mar 07 - 07:31 PM You may well be right Les but I can't count it out to 5/4. seems more like 12/8 to me, but what do I know .... it's getting too late for me to stay up for Steve Tilston, I've been listening to Kershaw's program since 23.15 and I've had my fill of Zimbabwean guitar, worthy though it undoubtedly is. I will listen to the archived program later ... |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Barry Finn Date: 26 Mar 07 - 07:40 PM He'll also be over acroos the pond for he "Old Songs" festival. He was at the last "Old Songs" we went to & I found my daughter sitting up close under his nose really enjoying his "Naked Highway Man" I had to keep a close eye on her for the rest of the weekend. I was afraid she be endangering for Steve's health. He was that excellent, though. Barry |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Leadfingers Date: 26 Mar 07 - 09:58 PM I was listening while I was in MudChat ! Steve IS a bit good ! |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Mar 07 - 05:15 AM I've just been counting out the "Rambling Comber" again and it comes out at 11/8. Is this possible ? |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Nick Date: 27 Mar 07 - 06:53 AM Sounds a bit like 7/8 to me but I get confused once I go past 4 |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: The Sandman Date: 27 Mar 07 - 12:46 PM In my opinion his version is not in the same league as John Kirkpatricks.I have the greatest respect for Steve Tilston as a guitarist,But Kirkpatricks version isthe best Ihave ever heard |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: The Sandman Date: 27 Mar 07 - 02:05 PM j ks version is in 5/4 |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Mar 07 - 03:49 PM I get confused once I get past 4 as well, Nick. thing with Steve Tilston's version is that there are some measures where I can count six beats and some measures where there are seven. I don't think the song can be said to have one actual time signature, it varies throughout the melody. If Steve Tilston came up with this arrangement by himself, it is just one more piece of evidence of the man's genius ... |
Subject: RE: Steve Tilston Now (UK) From: Girl Friday Date: 27 Mar 07 - 06:07 PM I listened to Andy Kershaw. Steve's bit was after the Zimbabwean guitar and a lot of other world stuff. We then had to sit through a lot of bangra- all sounding the same before Steve got on again. I felt sorry for Steve having to endure it. There was one redeeming feature. Kershaw did play some Lightnin' Hopkins |
