Hi all; another Northern CD; Bit on the Side have a CD out called 'Running Through the Heart', and it's available at our gigs or by mail order. A Personal Message on this board will do, or you can go to http://www.myspace.com/bit_on_the_side
where you can hear four tracks (MP3, not CD quality) before you decide. The CD is recorded so that we can reproduce it live, ie no megastar guests or 'wall of sound' overdubs; it sounds like we do if we play a gig at your folk club. A lot of the songs are about work, especially mining, and there is a blend of traditional stuff, contemporary songs and some of our own music. Tracks are;

But now This "Boat Band Cd" Looked very interesting. And as Joe also says. How do we get a copy.

Well, Guy Woolff says it's not self-serving commercialism, it's cultural information   exchange, so here goes.
My own band(the Boat Band) has just had its CD "A Trip to the Lakes" issued on Harbourtown Records, and Rod Stradling has just reviewed it on his Musical Traditions website. Sorry, I can't figure out how to do a link to a specific review, but if you go to the site it should be obvious in the Reviews section.

The purpose of the Yellowbellies Cd is to help send very ill children to Lapland to see Father Christmas. Radio lincolnshire are running the Go for Gold appeal for this purpose.

just seen this thread, there are very many Northern performers, many of whom perform trad song and I know that there are threads which say who they are ~

many like me have made their own Cds of eg Yorkshire Trad songs collected and arranged over very many years and are regular performers at clubs and fringe festival events, and festivals in context

Hootenanny, it may be stretching things a wee bit to include Kyloe CDs in a "Northern English" category, but they are indeed excellent whether or not there is any actual Mudcatter involvement.

The Borderers CD does have a couple of diva performances that are well worth listening to - see the review by Rod Stradling on the Musical Traditions website.

The Duncan McFarlane Band CD 'Woodshed Boys' is INDEED brill John!!!
Get one bought soonest lad!
They're at Saddleworth Fest this Saturday, Harewood House (twice!) and Robin Hood's Bay in August, Walton (Essex) and Otley Fests in September.

A thumbs up and good raps from 'fRoots' - excellent review in USA's latest 'Dirty Linen'
- and a fine report appeared yesterday on Radio Two's Folk & Acoustic Website (news page)
- which pointed out that some of the CD 'appears' on Yorkshire Television's soap 'Emmerdale'.
One track (Can't Go There) is even getting repeated plays on a 'country' station in Montana! (which worries them a bit I understand!)

All of the band live and work tween Ilkley/Otley/Leeds - is that Northern enough?
And Cleckheaton resident Alistair Russell and Maggie Boyle (Keighley resident?) are on it too.
Alistair Hulett's on it as well, but up in Glasgow, that's WAY too North for 'North'!!!

If you guys are looking for very good CD's of Northern performers then you should check out Kyloe Records at Berwick on Tweed, they are on the web. Don't have the address with me but you should be able to find it with a search. Great stuff, singers, fiddlers, Nothumbrian pipers and storytellers.
Many recorded for the first time by well known collector Mike Yates.

This 'permathread' thing seems all very well, but if the example above is anything to go by, may need some updating.
SarahC no longer plays in Kinin - not since about the time that message was posted I reckon! She now plays a mighty fiddle for Howden-Jones - now they're Northern! And pretty fine too.
Surely there are SO many Catters oop North (mesel among 'em) with CDs out that it would take some doing do list 'em all.
I'm not going to attempt it - or even 'single' anyone else out - but all of the northern catters mentioned so far are well worth listening to folks - go get 'em all! HFA

Guy - you can have lots of fun recording round one mic. I know someone who recently recorded a punk band around a single mic!

Mind you it was a VERY expensive Soundfield (originally intended for recording orchestral performances I believe).

I've recorded a bluegrass outfit using only ambient mics - but soon reverted to a mix of this and close micing - I guess my instinct as an engineer is to make sure I can get control of the mix later in the process!

THis is great , I will be able to make pots to mudcatter's cd's for hours on end.. I just got two older High Level Ranter cd's that bring back alot for me.. I spent years playing for New England square dances and alot of this music is related.. In feeling at least..

I will work at getting as meny of these CD's as I can.. Thanks to all who have posted here.

.Anyone keeping discriptions going on their cds???I think that would be a great addition to the perma -thread idea.. Also talking about over-veiws of what kind of recording was done.. For instance I think I remember my son Ben telling me SAm Pirt's group sat in a circle under a mike and got that incredable cd straight from just incredable performance.. When I work I add instroment on top of instroment track.. Lots of fun when your working alone... Anyway talking about cd making skills could be alot of fun and helpful for all thinking of doing one.. any thoughts??? All the best GUY

Yes my point with this thread was to talk about cd's of members in the north but am very happy to go look at the permathread. It is fun to hear what people have to say about music from friends we have all made from music get togthers. I love Sam Pirth's cd so its fun to talk about it.. The same with Oakley's cd.. It's easy to miss the existence of Mudcat faciities such a the permathread WYSIWYG brought to our attention, and it's a relevant one for anybody reading this thread. I hadn't realised it existed until I read her post.

And finding that permathread isn't that straightforward anyways. (In fact I haven't managed yet.)

If Greg Stephens hadn't overcome his modesty to plug Trip to the Lakes, I would have. (And here's a link to the Boat Band site for other goodies from the same stable, more or less.
