Subject: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: GUEST,Paul Smith Date: 02 Nov 02 - 04:07 PM I've been recommended to try this site by Eliza Carthy - shocked, and honoured,to get an immediate response from her about this query. As a 15 year old I remember hearing Martin Carthy sing a song which included the above lyrics. Some 30 years later I still cannot find it! All I can remember was it was on a compilation album with a title such as English Club Folk vol1. Thanking you all in anticipation (Eliza remembers it but can't think of the title!) Subject: RE: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 02 Nov 02 - 04:28 PM To Canaan's land, I'm on my way Where the soul of man never dies My darkest night will turn to day Where the soul of man never dies Dear friends there'll be no sad farewells No sad farewells There'll be no tear-dimmed eye No tear-dimmed Where all is peace and joy and love Where all is love And the soul of man never dies And the soul never dies I imagine Masato is answering this, even as I typing... but I'm shooting for an "I Beat Masato To The Draw" t-shirt.. Subject: RE: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: Jeri Date: 02 Nov 02 - 04:47 PM It's also in the Digital TraditionCanaan's Land. We still haven't answered Pauls query about the Martin Carthy recording it was on. Paul, I don't have any firsthand knowledge, but I looked at Garry Gillard's Martin Carthy site. No joy. Maybe someone out there has the album. |
Subject: RE: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 02 Nov 02 - 04:48 PM Full lyrics seem to be available quite widely once you know the title. For example Where the Soul of Man Never Dies According to the slevenotes (I don't think I ever heard the record) it was actually Andy Roberts who sang the song, Martin Carthy having sung on the track preceding it. Subject: Lyr Add: TO CANAAN'S LAND I'M ON MY WAY From: masato sakurai Date: 02 Nov 02 - 09:04 PM The hymn version from The CyberHymnal (with midi): TO CANAAN'S LAND I'M ON MY WAY Words & Music: William M. Golden, 1914 To Canaan's land I'm on my way, Where the soul of man never dies; My darkest night will turn to day, Where the soul of man never dies. Refrain Dear friends, there'll be no sad farewells, There'll be no tear dimmed eyes, Where all is peace and joy and love, And the soul of man never dies. A rose is blooming there for me, Where the soul of man never dies; And I will spend eternity, Where the soul of man never dies. Refrain A love light beams across the foam, Where the soul of man never dies; It shines to light the shores of home, Where the soul of man never dies. Refrain My life will end in deathless sleep, Where the soul of man never dies; And everlasting joys I'll reap, Where the soul of man never dies. Refrain I'm on my way to that fair land, Where the soul of man never dies; Where there will be no parting hand, Where the soul of man never dies. Refrain The title is sometimes "Where the Soul Never Dies" (Click HERE and HERE). Hank Milliams (Sr.) sang this (from THIS PAGE): WHERE THE SOUL NEVER DIES Recorded by Hank Williams (With Audrey Williams) Words and music by William M. Golden B: [C] To Canaan's land I'm on my way H: Where the soul of man never [G7] dies A: Where the soul........never dies B: My [C] darkest night will turn to day H: Where the soul of [G7] man never [C] dies A: Where the soul.............never dies. CHORUS H: [C] Dear friend there'll be no sad farewells A: No sad.............................farewells H: There'll be no tear-dimmed [G7] eyes A: No tear-........... dimmed eyes H: Where [C] all is joy, peace and love A: Where all....................is joy H: And the soul of man [G7] never [C] dies A: And the soul.............never dies. B: A garden's blooming there for me H: Where the soul of man never dies A: Where the soul........never dies B: And I shall spend eternity H: Where the soul of man never dies A: Where the soul........never dies. CHORUS The Carter Family's "(I'm) On My Way To Canaan's Land" (1930) seems to be a different song. "The Holiness people used to sing that," remembered Sara (Notes to The Carter Family: In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain, Bear Family, p. 54). Their recording is HERE and HERE. ON MY WAY TO CANAAN'S LAND I'm on my way to Canaan's land I'm on my way to Canaan's land I'm on my way to Canaan's land I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way If father won't go, it won't hinder me (3) I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way If mother won't go, it won't hinder me (3) I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way If sister won't go, it won't hinder me (3) I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way Oh be baptized in Jesus' name (3) I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way I'm on my way to Canaan's land (3) I'm on my way (praise God), I'm on my way ~Masato |
Subject: RE: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: Sandy Paton Date: 03 Nov 02 - 12:08 AM Trio from the small church in Beech Creek, North Carolina -- R. L. and Margie Harmon, with "Coot" Greene -- recorded it for me back in 1962. It's darned well done, too, and may be heard on my "Traditional Music of Beech Mountain, North Carolina, Volume II." This, and its companion recording, Volume I, is now available as one of our very first "custom CDs!" Other "custom CDs" now available include Jim Ringer's "Waitin' for the Hard Times to Go," Grant Rogers' "Songmaker of the Catskills," Lawrence Older's "Adirondack Ballads, Songs, and Tunes," Ed Trickett's first Folk-Legacy recording "The Telling Takes Me Home," and his last one: "People Like You." More are on the way, fast as we can get the masters done. And you might like to know that our two Art Thieme albums ("That's the Ticket!" and "On the Wilderness Road") will be ready very soon. I haven't even warned Art about these yet! Maybe he'll see it here for the first time. You watching, Art? Sandy |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: In canaans land + son of man never dies From: harpgirl Date: 08 Mar 04 - 11:45 PM Is this really an "American" song? Someone at my gig Friday night asked me about the origin of it. I hadn't sung it, but I thought it was popularized by the Carter's when they were singing on the Mexican stations owned by the quack doctor. |
