Subject: Lyr Req: 42 Barrells Of Oil
From: GUEST,Ral
Date: 02 Nov 02 - 06:16 PM

Been trying to find this old song. Not sure about the title, but here are part of the lyrics...

42 barrels of oil a day,
42 barrels and man that ain't hay
Look out the window and what do I see,
an oil well pumping more money for me.

Anybody have an idea on this one?
Ral

I don't know about the song. But, having been out on the oil fields a couple of weeks ago, any well that's pumping that much has to be pretty new. Production goes down as the pay zone of the well depletes.

Hi Ral
The lyrics, or most of them.

42 BARRELS OF OIL A DAY

I got me in a game of galloping dice,
Made forty-two passes, and man they was nice.
Took all my loot and stashed it away,
Bought me some land the very next day.
Now, that land was a sight to see
And all of my friends felt sorry for me.
They said, "Man, boy, you sure got stuck,"
But they hadn't figured on my Texas luck.

Forty-two barrels of oil, etc.

I went to the bank to start an account.
They asked me how much. I said, "Name the amount."
I brought it in boxes, bags, and sacks,
Jars, and cases, and even in stacks.
They counted and counted and finally said,
"We'll come to you next time instead." CHORUS

Got me a car, the finest made.
Cash on the line was how I paid.
Got me a ranch, got everything fine,
A brandin' iron with a dollar sign. CHORUS

Got me a gal, a cute little thing.
Went and bought her a big diamond ring.
I said to her, "Baby, let's me and you hitch,"
And I know she will 'cause she wants to be rich. CHORUS

I can't find any mention of this song with Google or at my usual music reference sites. Does anybody have any idea how old it is, who sang it, or what the title might be, in case it isn't 42 BARRELS OF OIL?

When I saw the subject line, I thought it was going to be something like,

42 barrels of oil a day,
42 barrrels of oil.
Take one down and pass it around,
41 barrels of oil a day.

Another set of lyrics from https://www.kitcomm.com/archive/index.php?t-39331.html :

42

1. Well, I got in a game of galloping dice,
Made 42 passes, and man it was nice.
I took all my loot and I stashed it away,
And bought me some land the very next day.
Now there was the land as dry as can be,
And all my friends felt sorry for me.
They said, "Man and boy, you sure got stuck,"
But they never figured on my Texas luck.

CHORUS: I get 42 barrels of oil a day,
42 barrels and man that ain't hay.
I look out my window and what do I see?
An oil well pumping more money for me.

2. Well, I went to the bank to start an account.
They asked me, how much? I said, "Name the amount."
I brought it: boxes, bags and sacks,
Jars and cases, and even in stacks,
But to be perfectly honestly frank,
I had enough money to start my own bank.

For they counted and counted and finally said:
"We'll come to you the next time instead."

"42", is the title and was out in the late fifties. Had this song a long time ago, just can't remember the artist. Real country hick sound that wasn't by Rusty Draper, although he may have also done it.

The song's title is "42" I believe Jimmy Murphy did this song in the late fifties. It's been a long time but I once had this song. Would like to get it again. Not likely though.

Forty-Two by Rusty Draper

As forty-two barrels of beautiful oil.
I've been engaged for quite a spell
She's a patient gal little Annabelle.
But I'd better quit while I'm ahead
She might marry-up with another instead.
I'll say "Annabelle let's you an' me hitch."
An' I know she will 'cause she wants to be rich.

[Chorus:]
I get forty-two barrels of oil a day.
Forty-two barrels an' man that ain't hay!
I look out my window an' what do I see?
An oil well a-pumpin' more money for me.

[Verse 4:]
I went to the bank to start an account
They asked me "How much?"
I said "Name the amount."
I brought it in boxes bags an' sacks
Jars an' cases an' even in stacks.
But to be perfectly honestly frank
I had enough money to start my own bank.
Well they counted an' counted an' finally said
"We'll come to you the next time instead."

[Chorus:]
Forty-two barrels of oil a day.
Forty-two barrels an' man that ain't hay!
I look out my window an' what do I see?
An oil well a-pumpin' more money for me.

[Short instrumental break.]

[Verse 5:]
Now I know that money isn't ever'thing
It can buy you a car an' a big diamond ring.
It can get you a saddle that's mounted in gold
But can't give you love to have an' to hold.
An' when you're alone on a cold winter's night
You can't put your arms around [it] tight.
So I'm mighty proud that Annabelle's true
When she looks in my eyes an' says "I love you."

[Outro:]
Forty-two barrels of oil a day.
Forty-two barrels an' man that ain't hay!
I look out my window an' what do I see?
Money money money money for me!

FORTY-TWO BARRELS OF OIL A DAY
by Rusty Draper (song lyrics circa 1955)

1. Now I got in a game of gallopin' dice.
I made forty-two passes an', man, it was nice!
Took all my loot an' stashed it away,
Bought me some land the very next day.
Now there was a land as dry as could be,
An' all o' my friends felt sorry for me.
They said, "Man an' boy, you sure got stuck."
But they didn't figger on my Texas luck.

CHORUS: Forty-two barrels of oil a day.
Forty-two barrels an', man, that ain't hay!
I look out my window an' what do I see?
An oil well a-pumpin' more money for me.

2. Now my back yard's a sight to behold.
Wherever ya look there's liquid gold.
Never have seen so much money before:
Forty-two barrels an' they tell me there's more.
Bought me a car, the finest made.
Cash on the line, was how I paid.
Got me a ranch, have everything fine,
A brandin' iron with a dollar sign. CHORUS

3. Gonna live like a king 'cause there's nothin' as royal
As forty-two barrels of beautiful oil.
I've been engaged for quite a spell.
She's a patient gal, little Annabelle,
But I'd better quit while I'm ahead.
She might marry-up with another instead.
I'll say, "Annabelle, let's you an' me hitch."
An' I know she will, 'cause she wants to be rich. CHORUS

4. I went to the bank to start an account.
They asked me, "How much?" I said, "Name the amount."
I brought it in boxes, bags an' sacks,
Jars an' cases an' even in stacks,
But to be perfectly, honestly frank,
I had enough money to start my own bank.
Well, they counted an' counted an' finally said,
"We'll come to you the next time instead." CHORUS

5. Now I know that money isn't ever'thing.
It can buy you a car an' a big diamond ring.
It can get you a saddle that's mounted in gold,
But can't give you love to have an' to hold.
An' when you're alone on a cold winter's night,
You can't put your arms around it tight.
So, I'm mighty proud that Annabelle's true,
When she looks in my eyes an' says, "I love you."

OUTRO: Forty-two barrels of oil a day.
Forty-two barrels an', man, that ain't hay!
I look out my window an' what do I see?
Money, money, money, money for me!

Yes, Rusty Draper did a song singing about 42 barrels of oil. It's not the one asked about by the original post. Two different songs. Rusty Draper's song wasn't too bad. It's just a shame the song referred to by the original post and myself is probably lost forever. With a lot of luck it might show up someday.

I have recently re discovered the site that had a copy of the song we are discussing. The site is........buriedinvynal.........on youtube. The song is no longer there. I tried to contact the person of that site to see if he would post 42 barrels, again. I was unable to get a message through. Password problem. Maybe you know how to make contact. Good luck in your search. If you manage to get through and this person puts it on again. Maybe you could post that you were successful.

Dear all,

I realise this thread started 13 years ago in 2002, but I've only just come across it. So, on the assumption that anyone's still interested, can I just say that I came across this song being played in a record shop in Camden Lock (London) c.1980, and, on that basis, bought the 45 there and then. I haven't got it in front of me - I'm not at home right now - but I vaguely recall that the singer was someone called Tiny Murphy - I don't think anyone's mentioned him yet. (I shall check when I get home.)

I know the lyrics well, and I think that "Guest999" (above, c.2013) has got it pretty much spot on, other than a couple of very minor typos.

It's a brilliant song!

Best wishes,

- Peter Marcus

I worked in the oil and gas industry for 30 years and wondered about the significance of the 42 barrels - it doesn't convert to any other significant unit of volume, e.g. Cubic metres etc.
Oddly though the conversion factor from oil barrels to US gallons is 42 - so did the writer of the song confuse his units or is this just coincidence ?
